Parking and Transportation Update

Welcome back Faculty and Staff! As we begin a new academic year you will see a few significant changes to our parking and transit options. At first glance, you may have noticed some changes in lot designation. Lots A and D are reserved for valid Faculty/Staff permits. Lot B is residential and commuter students. Lot E is primarily to be used for short-term (3 hour max) visitor parking. Lot H will continue to be special permits, as well as the addition of HourCar and Car2Go. Lot J is now limited to special permit types only. This is the new parking home of all Future Auggie visitors! Lot K and those on street spots designated as C, will continue to be available for our commuter students only. Lot L will remain available to all valid permit holders.

Augsburg College has also secured additional parking options for the 2016-2017 academic year. Lot O (2511 Franklin Ave. E.) and Lot M (2001 Minnehaha Ave.) are off-site lots that may be utilized as valid permit overflow and can also be secured for those interested in one of the new Combo Pack options. Please see augsburg.edu/dps/parking/facultystaff-parking/ for available options and details. Valid permits will need to be displayed for all lots. DPS will be working to ensure compliance, utilizing ticketing and towing when appropriate.

Please visit inside.augsburg.edu/transportation/ for more information regarding public transit use, biking, and other options.

Teaching and Learning

The 2016-17 Civic Studies Initiative

Beginning in the 2016-17 academic year, the Civic Studies Initiative, co-sponsored by the Sabo Center, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Education Department, will acquaint the wider college and its community partners with the theory and practice of civic agency and its transdisciplinary field of Civic Studies.

The Civic Studies Initiative will include four symposia open to all faculty, staff, students, and the public. These symposia will introduce Civic Studies as presenting a different definition of citizen, citizen as co-creator, and what that implies. They will also explain how to integrate civic agency skills into courses and student activities; look at how the "democracy college" lens calls for rethinking assessment to emphasize cooperative excellence; and explore what "public scholarship" looks like with a Civic Studies lens. The first symposium will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 8 to 9:30am, location TBD.

Another aspect of the initiative will be the selection of Civic Studies Augsburg Fellows and Community Fellows. These will be chosen from a variety of disciplines and staff units as well as community partners, forming a learning community, which will help organize the subsequent symposia, undertake more thorough study of Civic Studies, and develop projects for policy and culture change.

Learn more at the following link and stay tuned throughout the year for more details on upcoming symposia.

Re-energize Your Teaching with Help from CTL

Faculty, as the fall semester fast approaches don't forget about CTL's latest faculty development initiative, the Classroom Consulting program.

Augsburg's Classroom Consulting program is designed to offer individualized and course-specific faculty development through confidential peer partnerships. The program is run solely by the Center for Teaching and Learning and operates fully outside the tenure and promotion review process (see confidentiality policy). Any Augsburg instructor is welcome and encouraged to work with a consultant whether their goal is addressing a specific problem, exploring strategies to more fully engage students, or seeking ideas to re-energize a course.

Trained Classroom Consultants are available on an on-call basis to offer assistance to fellow faculty members. Assistance and support, provided without record and in strict confidence, may take several forms including observations of classroom teaching, review of course materials, discussions of classroom management strategies, tactics specific to hybrid courses*, or conducting focus groups with students (Small Group Instructional Diagnosis). Because consultations are course and faculty-specific, an initial meeting between the consultant and faculty member will be used to determine the goals and needs of the faculty member.

Read about the individual consultants on the CTL website: http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/classroom-consultants/

If you would like additional information or would like to arrange a meeting with a consultant, please contact Tim Pippert at ctl@augsburg.edu.
