Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Spring Semester Parking Permit Sale Next Monday

Spring semester surface lot parking permit sales will open to all students, faculty, and staff on Monday, December 7 at 9:00am. Luther and Oren Underground permits will be on sale on Monday morning to all students, and any remaining Luther and Oren Underground permits will be available to faculty and staff on Wednesday, December 9 at 9:00am.

Permits can be purchased online via Inside Augsburg under the "Parking Services" link. Permits will NOT be mailed out, and must be picked up from the Department of Public Safety, located in the Urness/Mortensen hall lobby. Please allow 3 business days after payment to process your permit before pick-up. Other detailed information regarding permit pricing, FTE or student status issues, or general questions please visit our website: http://www.augsburg.edu/dps/parking/

In order to ensure that the Augsburg community has a place to park on campus, we enforce parking policies 24/7. You must have a valid permit to park on campus.

Please note that if you are a Fall-only permit holder your permit will expire on January 10th, 2016. Spring permits will be valid starting on January 11th.

Summer Research at Mayo in Bioethics - All Majors

OPEN TO ALL MAJORS!

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2016 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 4-6 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational sessions on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.

Do Paid Summer Research Off-Campus - Info this Thurs.

Each summer, universities, national labs, and other research institutions throughout the country offer paid research opportunities for undergraduates. In past years, Augsburg students have been accepted to programs at locations such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, The University of Minnesota, The University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, and The Mayo Clinic, among many others.

Paid Internships in China

Augsburg graduates and graduating seniors (May 2016) are invited to apply for a one-academic year Internship at UIC. Applications for the Intern position must be completed and submitted to UIC's International Development Office no later than the 14th of February 2016.

Requirements for the Application include:

1. Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in any relevant programme.

2. A full transcript of academic work completed with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.

3. Two letters of recommendation from academic staff supporting the application.

4. A full personal resume including an expression of interest in a position in a specific programme which is offered as a major at UIC. The applicant should articulate the skills and experience he/she would bring to this specific area of the UIC academic programme. General Education is also a viable academic area in which to pursue an Intern position. See the following website for more information on the academic curriculum at UIC: http://uic.edu.hk/en/

5. Additional information of activities, working experiences, travel and special strengths including computer/technology skills which are important in assuming the role of an Intern.

6. Agreement to enroll in a specially designed "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme"(see Compensation for the Intern Position at UIC below for details) offered by the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture (CLC) at UIC during their year of residence at UIC.

7. An interview conducted by the Director of International Education at the home institution in which the applicant is enrolled. It is the applicant's responsibility to schedule this interview with the Director of International Education at his/her home institution.


Compensation for the Intern position at UIC:

1. A monthly housing allowance (RMB1000, for example, for shared apartments at Horizon Cove) will be granted; health insurance; and a round-trip economy air ticket from home country to China of up to RMB11, 000 on a reimbursement basis (the China-home country ticket is given upon successful completion of contract) and ferry or bus fare from airport of arrival to Zhuhai;

2. A monthly stipend of RMB 6000 ($950 US) is paid from assumption of duties in August/September to the end of June. During this period Interns are involved in assigned duties and organizing activities (see requirements and responsibilities of Interns below).

3. A "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme" consisting of (a) two Chinese language classes of 3 hours weekly in both semesters; (b) lectures/seminars on Chinese culture, history and development at fortnightly intervals, 2 to 3 hours each, 3 to 4 times per semester; and (c) 2-4 visits to historical sites and museums in nearby locations to appreciate the great depth of Chinese history and culture.

Career Quick Stop - Stop By

These drop-in hours are designed to expand access to career coaches and to accommodate impromptu student career questions as they arise. During Quick Stop hours students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis for brief, 15-minute drop-in appointments. These times are meant for quick career questions, brief resume or cover letter reviews, or help getting started with an internship or job search. Stress Busters Practice Group

Please come check-out a way to better handle your stress--especially for final exams. The Center for Wellness & Counseling is hosting a daily practice group Monday through Thursday at 4:30-5:30pm in our group room. All are welcome and no equipment needed!

We'll be practicing mindful breathing, walking, and sitting techniques. Please come de-stress with us! These sessions will be facilitated by Jon Vaughan-Fier, CWC counselor and advisor to the Augsburg Mindfulness Club.

Student Writers: Engman Prize Deadline is FRIDAY

The Engman Prize is a literary competition honoring undergraduate writing is co-sponsored by Murphy Square and the English Department. Judges will select up to three winners in each of the prize categories. To enter, writers must be enrolled at Augsburg College.

The submission deadline is THIS FRIDAY, December 4. Winners will be notified in December.

Writers may enter in each of the four categories - creative non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and screenwriting - but can only win in one. The guidelines for the four categories are as follows:

Short Fiction – A complete short story of not more than 15 pages.

Creative Nonfiction – One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.

Poetry – At least three poems. Poetry entries with fewer than three poems will not be accepted.

Screenwriting – Up to 30 pages (either a complete short script or a portion of a longer script, such as the first act of a feature-length, narrative screenplay; use of screenplay format and style will be considered during the judging process).

Entries must be submitted electronically as attachments to engmanprize@augsburg.edu.

Want to Lead a Short-Term Program? Apply by 12/19

Faculty interested in leading a short-term study abroad program in 2016-2017 must submit a proposal by December 19, 2015. More information is available at www.augsburg.edu/global - look under Resources for faculty and staff. At this URL, faculty can review the application itself, along with an informational packet that addresses common questions related to location, cost, marketing, and roles/responsibilities.

Faculty are also welcome to submit for 2017-2018! While firm decisions regarding 2017-2018 proposals will not be made during this cycle; they will be reviewed and, when possible, given preference for acceptance during the next cycle.

STEM Peer Mentoring - Spring 2016

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Mentors (STEMM) is a student-led mentoring program that focuses to provide support to first-year STEM students in navigating their undergraduate careers and preparation for success inside and outside of the classroom.

Interested in a year of service after graduation? Lutheran Volunteer Corps is a faith-based, full-time service and leadership program operating in 13 cities across the United States. Our mission is to unite people to work for peace with justice. Volunteers serve in full-time positions at social justice organizations for one year while also living together in community.

Get Paid for Your Internship

Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?

You may be able to do just that because of a grant recently awarded to Augsburg College. Augsburg has recently been awarded a Great Lakes Career Ready Grant. The Career Ready Internship grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation provides funds to colleges and universities so that they can partner with businesses and nonprofits to develop new paid internships, and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship
* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study)
* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations
* Internships will take place Spring 2016, Summer 2016 or Fall 2016

Act now! Priority consideration is given to students who complete the short Augsburg application, so we recommend you complete it soon.

Forgiveness TPT-MN Video Features Krista Tippett

Exploring Forgiveness: TPT MN Video Sponsored by Augsburg Features Krista Tippett
Begins airing Sunday December 27th, 2015

Augsburg Adjunct Dean J. Seal has produced a half hour video on Forgiveness for TPT MN. It features an interview with Krista Tippett, who is host of On Being, a nationally syndicated radio show and website on spirituality and science. Tippett just received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama. She has spoken at Augsburg in the Convocation Series in 2013. Tippet synthesizes some of what she has learned about forgiveness from her many interviews on great religious and spiritual leaders on her show.

Another featured guest is Amineh Safi, Augsburg alum and McNair Scholar, a Syrian Refugee who grew up in Eden Prairie. She is now on a full scholarship at the Humphrey Institute. She talks about forgiveness from the Islamic tradition, in the context of her brother's execution by the Assad Regime. This piece also features leading Jewish Scholar Louis Newman, from Carleton College, speaking on the Jewish traditions of forgiveness and how they work with knowledge fro the humanities.

Finally, Avant Nordeast Artist Dougie Padilla talks about how we can construct our own rituals of forgiveness.

It is produced by Spirit in the House, a non-profit that produced two symposia on Forgiveness at Concordia University. Seal also spoke on forgiveness at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in 2013, which featured the Dalai Lama. This is the swan song for Spirit in the House and the Forgiveness 360 series.

This week's speaker is Dr. Katy Micek from WindLogics. WindLogics is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary company of NextEra Energy, LLC and provides innovative forecasting and optimization solutions that enable low cost, reliable, and sustainable power systems. The title of Katy's talk is "Data Science at WindLogics" and she will present the mathematics behind automating the selection process as a linear programming problem and discuss skills needed while working as a data scientist.

At the end of December Vicki will be retire from the College. Please join the department in honoring her long-standing leadership of both graduate and undergraduate programs, invaluable work for the department, the college and the community and her faithful stewardship and teaching of the next generation of K-12 teachers. A short honoring presentation will begin at 4:00 in the Education Suite.

The Inner Work of Radical Compassion

The Inner Work of Radical Compassion: Transforming Difficult Emotions

Monday December 7th, 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Hoversten Chapel

This workshop, led by Mark Yaconelli, the Co-Founder of The Center for Engaged Compassion, is for persons who seek to deepen their skills and capacities for practicing engaged compassion. It is ideal for students, social justice activists, teachers, ministers, and anyone who seeks practical training in compassionate living. The workshop will offer a mixture of presentation, creative exercises, and discussion focused on understanding and transforming difficult emotions that often arise in interpersonal relationships and social actions that confront injustice.

If you are looking for an occasional babysitter on the weekends my good friend, Laura (who is an Augsburg alum), is looking to connect with families in the metro area. Here is her information:

I am a currently a graduate student at the U of MN preparing to be an art educator. I have been a nanny, babysitter, camp counselor, dog sitter, and cleaned houses to put myself through school. In the summer, I work at a camp in the Boundary Waters and lead students on canoe trips. I enjoy outdoor adventures, baking, and reading stories with kids of all ages.
