Please note that Lot J (behind Foss and Music) will be closed at the following dates at times:
From midnight Tuesday, March 3rd until 10 p.m. Wednesday, March 4th
Everyone will be expected to have their cars removed from this lot during the times listed above. Failure to abide by these regulations can result in a ticket or tow of the vehicle at the vehicle owners expense. If you have any questions feel free to call DPS at 612-330-1717.

Teaching and Learning

Inclusive Course Workshop - This Wednesday

Please join your colleagues for an important workshop addressing the creation of courses that are inclusive to all our students. The workshop will be led by Dr. Timothy Lensmire, Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota.

The workshop is framed by Kevin Kumashiro's work, in Troubling Education, on antioppressive education. We will examine four categories of antioppressive education in order to imagine how we might create more inclusive courses: education for the Other, education about the Other, education for critical consciousness and action, and education that disrupts traditional discourses. Participants will identify possibilities for change in their teaching and courses, as well as explore challenges to such change.

Present Your Student Research at Zyzzogeton

Calling all student researchers: participate in Augsburg's annual Zyzzogeton poster fair on April 10th from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium! This event, sponsored by URGO, McNair, and STEM programs, is a chance to share the progress of your research with faculty, fellow students, family, and the community. Last year, over 75 students participated in Zyzzogeton.

ABSTRACTS ARE DUE MARCH 9 at the time of registration. To register, go to URGO's website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) and click on the orange box on the right hand side of the page.
*You do not have to have done research with URGO to participate.

URGO/McNair/STEM Programs will cover the cost of posters submitted by Thursday, March 26. If you need assistance designing or editing your poster, you are encouraged to make an appointment with our staff by emailing urgo@augsburg.edu.

Updated Spring Focused Conversation Schedule

The spring-term Focused Conversation schedule has been updated to include a session on April 6 and 7 facilitated by President Pribbenow. That session will focus on continuing the discussion about the seven Augsburg2019 institutional initiatives introduced at the All Hands meeting.

The All Hands meeting schedule for the remainder of the academic year is as follows:

Stretch, Center, and De-stress with FREE Yoga

Please join the Mindfulness Club for free yoga with Cindy Sawamura today in the Band Room (Music Hall) from noon to 1pm today. All equipment suppled, and all skill levels are welcome--especially beginners. Come de-stress with us!

Bonner Leaders Program Application

The Bonner Leaders Program is looking to add energized and passionate first-year students to its program for the upcoming academic year!

The Augsburg Bonner Leaders Program is a community-based work-study program encouraging leadership development for students dedicated to integrating civic engagement into their college learning experience.

Requirements:
1. Eligible for work study funds through awarded financial aid
2. Able to make a 2 year commitment to participating in the Augsburg Bonner Leader program
3. Work 10-15 hours/week with a community partner (totaling ~140 hours a semester)
4. Attend all Bonner meetings (~4 hours/ month)

Sabo Scholar Applications Available Now

Attention second year students -- The application to be a Sabo Scholar during 2015-2016 is now available. The Sabo Scholars are a small group of juniors and seniors who have interest in and a commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy, and careers in public service.

We are currently accepting application from students who will be juniors during the 2015-2016 year. Sabo Scholars will receive a $2,000 scholarship each year.

Apply to be a Youth Theology Institute Mentor

Attention current students:

We are looking for FIVE current students to serve as mentors for this summer's Youth Theology Institute (ACYTI). http://www.augsburg.edu/ccv/acyti/

If you enjoy engaging in thoughtful faith conversations, mentoring high school youth, and working in a team setting, please take a look at the "ACYTI Mentor" posting on the Human Resources website and apply soon. The position is listed on the Human Resources employment listings under "student positions."

Mentors should be available for some training in April and the entire week of June 13-19. Note: this is a paid internship. The Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute is a collaborative effort by the Christensen Center for Vocation, Campus Ministry, and the Religion Department.

Brain Injury Awareness Month Panel Discussion

The Center for Wellness and Counseling (formerly CCHP) will be hosting a brown bag lunch and panel discussion on understanding and working with individuals with brain injuries.

Please join us on Wednesday 3/11/15 from 12:30-1:30 pm in OGC 100 for this discussion with representatives from the MN Brain Injury Alliance, Augsburg student Laurent Dalmeida and Director of CLASS Kathy McGillivray to learn more about this issue as well as how to work with students with brain injuries.

Save The Kids, a national org with an Augsburg chapter that does education and organizing addressing the school-prison pipeline, will collaborate with Common Table organizers and several neighborhood youth workers to host bi-weekly Open Mics. Each will feature several local artists, leaving the rest of the time open for others in the room to share spoken word, music, poems, and to plug opportunities for young people to get involved in the community work of those present!

We Are Hmong Minnesota Family Day and Exhibit

We Are Hmong Minnesota Family Day and Exhibit Opening
MN History Center

Be the first to see the exhibit at the free Family Day and Exhibit Opening on March 7! November 2015 marks the 40th anniversary of the Hmong migration to Minnesota following the war in Southeast Asia. Today, the Twin Cities metro area is home to 66,000 Hmong, the largest urban Hmong population in the United States.

Developed in partnership with the Hmong community, this exhibit will commemorate the anniversary and celebrate the significant political, social and economic contributions the Hmong have made to Minnesota and the nation.

Experience the journey the Hmong took from Southeast Asia to their new homeland in Minnesota four decades ago at the opening of the new History Center exhibit "We Are Hmong Minnesota," on view March 7-Nov. 29. Celebrate the contributions of this vital and active community with music and dance performances, displays, fashion, games, demonstrations and multi-generational hands-on activities.

Spring Wellness Lunch & Learn: Diabetes Awareness

We are pleased to announce a spring brown bag lunch and learn session on Diabetes Awareness and Prevention. Sarah Venturin, who is a registered dietician at Park Nicollet will be leading a presentation on this important health topic. Did you know that the CDC recently reported that as of 2012, 9.3% of the U.S. population has diabetes with an estimated annual cost of treatment in the U.S. of $245 billion? Please join your colleagues in this brown bag session to learn more about this health topic. This presentation will provide more information about what diabetes is, how it effects the body and Diabetes prevention.

Five Fridays of Fitness: Free Fitness Assessment

The fitness assessment features the BodPod. The BodPod is the most accurate means to measure lean muscle mass and body fat percentages. This tool requires sitting in a chamber for one minute as measurements are taken. The cost of a BodPod assessment at a fitness facility ranges from $65-$100. The entire fitness assessment take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

This fitness assessment is provided to you by Dr. Clapp, Dr. Ribiero, and exercise science majors.

After completing all assessments, participants will receive their current fitness status and a comparison to national benchmarks for individuals of similar age and gender. Dark Side of the Boom Documentary Screening

The Bakken oil fields have brought great wealth to North Dakota, but there is a dark side to the boom. Sexual exploitation and human trafficking are now part of the social landscape in rural North Dakota. Come view the 30 minute documentary, BOOM, followed by a discussion with representatives from iEmpathize (an international human rights organization dedicated to combating crimes against children).

Boyte Speech on Student Success - TODAY

Please join the Sabo Center on Tuesday, March 3, from 4-5 p.m. (previously scheduled for 3:30, changed to accommodate Staff Awards attendees) in the Marshall Room for a listening and feedback session with Harry Boyte, Senior Scholar of the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship. Later in March Harry will be delivering the concluding address to the Gates Foundation SXSW EDU 2015 conference, "Getting to Graduation: Re-designing Higher Ed for Student Success" in Austin, Texas.

This feedback session will feature a draft of Boyte's speech, which draws on Augsburg experiences and innovations, as well as the civic agency/public work/democratic society framework reflected in the new book collection he edited, Democracy's Education: Public Work, Citizenship, and the Future of Colleges and Universities (Vanderbilt University Press). This talk is an important opportunity to showcase some of the work of Augsburg and our colleagues in "educating for democracy" throughout higher education, and is open to anyone who would like to attend.

Upcoming Events/Conferences: CGEE Presentations

Multiple CGE faculty/staff will be presenting at upcoming events and conferences this spring:

Dean Eric Canny will be presenting for NAFSA: Association of International Educators during a webinar called "Orientation for the Changing Student." Eric will touch upon orientation strategies for "non-traditional" students and the effectiveness of virtual methods. They will also discuss the importance of delivering cross-cultural preparation amidst the growing focus on logistical information. March 19 from 3-4:30 (EST). Lucy Hardaker will co-present at the Wisconsin Association of International Educator's regional conference on March 20th. Her presentation is titled "The Definitive Ranking of Working in Education Abroad vs. International Student Services" and is aimed at new and aspiring professionals in the field of international education.

Academic Programs Abroad Coordinator, Margaret Anderson, will co-facilitate a roundtable dialogue at the Forum on Education Abroad conference. The session topic is How Far Do You Go to Make it Work?: Bringing the Disability Debate to the Table. The session will address laws, terrain, architecture and other barriers that can make it difficult to accommodate students with access issues in certain study abroad programs. The Forum Conference will take place in New Orleans from March 25-27.

Along with Dulce Monterrubio, Augsburg's Director of Latin@ Student Services, Andrea Dvorak, Assistant Director of Augsburg Abroad and Faculty-Led Programs Coordinator, will present at the Diversity Abroad conference. Their session Breaking Barriers: Off-campus Options for DACA and Students with Various Immigration Statuses will occur on March 24.
