Register by July 20 for Vocation Conference

The 18th annual Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference will convene again at Augsburg from Monday, July 30, to Wednesday, August 1. The conference will begin with dinner at 5 p.m. on July 30 and conclude by 1:30 p.m. on August 1. The theme is: "A Calling to Embrace Creation: Lutheran Higher Education, Sustainability, and Stewardship."

As you may know, the ELCA sponsors teams of up to five faculty and staff from each of the ELCA colleges to attend this annual gathering. Each year this conference brings together our Lutheran college colleagues to explore the distinctive roles we play in higher education. As was true for the past three years, one of the benefits of being the host site is that we have the option of inviting more than five people to attend.

To see the conference agenda, visit http://www.augsburg.edu/acfl/documents/2012Agenda.pdf, and to register for the conference, visit http://www.augsburg.edu/acfl/conferenceapplication.html. Please note that the deadline for registration is Friday, July 20.

Commissioner Visits Health Commons at Dar Ul-Quba

Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson toured Health Commons, located in the Dar Ul-Quba Cultural Center, to experience the unique community-based health approach firsthand.

Health Commons, which opened in September 2011, is a collaboration of the University of Minnesota Medical Center Fairview, the Augsburg College Department of Nursing, and the East African Health Project. It is supported by a $50,000 grant from the UCare Fund, which seeks to improve health through innovative partnerships across communities and to reduce disparities for disadvantaged populations.

The drop-in center is open two afternoons each week. Free of charge, participants take nutrition, parenting, and exercise classes offered by community partners like University of Minnesota Extension Services and the Somali Women’s Education Network. Dr. Osman Harare from the East African Health Project and Augsburg nursing faculty provide individual consultations for health-related issues, medication clarification, blood pressure monitoring, and advice about navigating the health care system. Volunteers offer alternative health therapies, such as healing touch and massage.

Students in Augsburg’s transcultural nursing program who help staff Health Commons also benefit from the unique opportunity for transcultural experience providing health services.
