Creating an Inclusive Campus – Call for Proposals

This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:

Engaging all students – These sessions explore student differences and what we can do to ensure that all students feel included and receive the support they need to be successful.

Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum – These sessions examine what departments are doing to address diversity and global learning in their courses and programs.

Developing our community – This track focuses on faculty, staff, and administrator skills and practices, and what we can do to ensure inclusiveness across the campus.

The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

Minnesota Idea Open Challenge - Ideas due Mar 23

Working Together Across Cultures and Faiths

Minnesotans are known for their loyalty and tight-knit relationships. Unfortunately, our signature traits also mean we are not as welcoming or open to others as we are to those within our own circles. In a changing state that has become more diverse, we face more situations where conflicts may arise. The Minnesota Idea Open believes that Minnesota is a better place when we work together in ways that push us beyond our usual comfort zones.

Submit your best idea by March 23.

We are asking Minnesotans to help answer the question: What is your best idea to build bonds and work together across cultures and faiths in your community? Facing Race is a proud sponsor of this year's Idea Open Challenge. Three winning ideas may receive $15,000 each for implementation, and two runners-up are eligible for $5,000 each. Learn more and submit your idea at: www.MNIdeaOpen.org

Great Colleges to Work For Survey 2012

We are participating in the 2012 Great Colleges to Work For program sponsored by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The survey program recognizes institutions that have built great workplaces. In addition to the opportunity for recognition, we will benefit from the program's nationally-normed benchmark data. The survey period is March 19 – April 13.

We first participated in the Great Colleges to Work For program in 2010. Our results from the 2010 survey spurred the College to implement a number of initiatives campus-wide. Our participation this year will allow us to compare our results from 2010 to 2012 and identify areas where improvement has been made and others where improvement is still needed.

Responses to the survey will be processed by ModernThink, the survey administrator, and will be completely anonymous. The College will receive a summary report of our results, which we will share with the college community. Given the parameters for benchmarking set by the Chronicle, only full-time faculty, exempt staff, and administrators at 1.0 FTE will receive an invitation to participate in the Chronicle survey. To ensure all employees have the opportunity to give feedback to the College, part-time faculty and staff and full-time hourly staff will receive invitations to a similar survey in April.

Please join us in our efforts to make Augsburg College a better place to work. Should you have any questions about the survey, please call Human Resources at 612-330-1058.

$1 = $4 = $8= Annual FoodLess FoodDrive

Sabo Center for Citizenship and Learning is now organizing the 4th annual FoodLess FoodDrive, and our goal is to raise enough funds to provide three months worth of food purchased by Brian Coyle Food shelf to Cedar-Riverside residents. Each month they spend over $1,000 on bulk food purchasing for distribution, so Augsburg is setting a $3,000 goal to fill their shelves until the summer.

Using commodity programs and bulk buying power, money in the food shelf's hand is worth four times as much as ours in a grocery store. This makes your $1 equate to $4 of food in the hands of the food shelf. Money also allows the food shelf to purchase exactly what the community needs when it needs it.

The Cedar-Riverside community relies on us, so we ask you to join us in our effort to help them. More information about the FoodLess FoodDrive and how you can make a monetary contribution has been delivered by mail to all Faculty and Staff members this week. For students that wish to donate; look for our events later this month!

Chapel on Friday: Monastic Chant & Prayer in Latin

Hear monastic chanting and prayer as it was performed in the Middle Ages. We invite you to join Medieval Studies major Andrew Fox for his senior "chapel talk", this Friday, March 16, at 10:20am, in Hoversten Chapel. This will be a memorable service, in which Andrew and a few of his friends attempt to reenact the medieval monastic practice of chanting the hours in Latin. The music will be beautiful. Oakes Named to D3Baseball.com Team of Week

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2012/3/14/base031412a.aspx?path=baseball

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College pitcher Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.) was named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday.

Making his second collegiate pitching appearance and first collegiate start, Oakes threw a seven-inning no-hitter, striking out seven, in Augsburg's 2-0 win over Mayville State (N.D.) in the first game of a doubleheader at the Metrodome in Minneapolis on Friday. The no-hitter was the first thrown by an Auggie in Keith Bateman's nine seasons as Augsburg's head coach.

Oakes allowed just five batters to reach base -- four on hit-by-pitches and one on an error -- while not walking a batter. The biggest threat came in the bottom of the seventh, when runners reached second and third on a hit batter and fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. But Oakes struck out the final batter he faced to cap the no-hitter.

The D3Baseball.com Team of the Week is selected by the staff of D3Baseball.com, a national site that covers NCAA Division III baseball. Thirteen players are selected each week -- one at each defensive position, a designated hitter, three starting pitchers and a relief pitcher.
