MINNEAPOLIS (3/17/06) -- Augsburg College women's hockey coach Jill Pohtilla and Augsburg graduate Janet Marvin '86 were inducted into the Women's Hockey Association of Minnesota (WHAM) Hall of Fame in ceremonies on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington.
The duo, along with Kathy Cordes and Lucille Korsman, were inducted into the WHAM Hall of Fame at the Bloomington Ice Gardens during the Minnesota Hockey Women's State Tournament. This is the second year that WHAM has inducted individuals into its Hall of Fame. Individuals are voted into the Hall of Fame by WHAM members, who also select a longtime founder of girls' or women's hockey.
Pohtilla has served as womenâs ice hockey head coach at Augsburg since the team was formed in 1995 as the first intercollegiate varsity womenâs hockey program in the Midwest. She also coached during the first year of girls' non-high school league-sanctioned hockey in 1993, and again in 1994 when the Minnesota State High School League first sponsored ice hockey for girls.
She was instrumental in developing the Midwestern Collegiate Women's Hockey Alliance (the original organization for college womenâs hockey in the Midwest), and later was a key part of the formulation of women's hockey as a varsity championship sport in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference -- just the second conference in the nation (and first at the exclusively Division III level) to sponsor the sport. She earned MIAC Coach of the Year honors in 1999-2000, as the Auggies finished second nationally in the first national tournament for Division III teams (AWCHA). She has been a finalist for National Coach of the Year honors twice in her career.
She was president of the Minnesota Girls' and Women's Hockey Association (now WHAM) in 1989-90, as well as playing for 18 years in the league. She served as secretary/treasurer of the American Women's Hockey Coaches Association from 2000-04, was a two year member of the the American Hockey Coaches Association awards committee, served from 2000-04 on the NCAA Division III Womenâs Ice Hockey Committee, and helped write the original manual for the Division III national tournament.
Pohtilla has also been active on the national women's hockey scene as a coach at the United States Olympic Women's Hockey Development Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., coaching teams in 1997, 1998, 2004 and 2005.
Pohtilla began playing ice hockey in 1974, and was a member of the four-time national champion Minnesota Checkers girls' hockey team. In 1998, Pohtilla received the ãBreaking Barriers Awardä from the Minnesota Coalition to Promote Women in Athletic Leadership on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Marvin, daughter of legendary amateur hockey coach Cal Marvin, has been active in both playing and coaching hockey for several decades, in particular starting and coaching the Minneapolis Edison youth girls' hockey program in north/northeast Minneapolis for the last seven years.
She has led a group of volunteer coaches in introducing a diverse group of young girls, many Hmong and African-American, to the game of hockey. She often pays for equipment, uniforms and supplies for the girls herself, in addition to providing transportation to games and practices. The Edison program has grown from one small team seven years ago to nearly 50 girls on various age-group teams in recent years.
Last summer, Marvin and fellow Augsburg alum John Evans '82 received grant money from City Kids Inc., a north Minneapolis program, to provide hockey instruction for north-side children. About 30 kids took part in the summer-long program, portions of which were held at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Several Augsburg student-athletes assisted Marvin in coaching during the summer program.
Cordes has been involved in women's hockey since 1986, playing on four different teams during season play and 12 different national teams. She was among the final 52 players in a selection pool for the 1988 U.S. Olympic team, and has also coached hockey during her career.
Korsman has been active in girls' hockey since 1970, helping to start the Farmington girls' team. She also was the first woman on the Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association board, serving for three years.

MINNEAPOLIS (3/19/06) -- Augsburg College men's hockey forward Aaron Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was named to the American Hockey Coaches Association RBK Hockey Division III Men's All-American first team from the West Region, it was announced on Saturday.
Johnson is Augsburg's 28th men's hockey All-American in school history and first since 2003. The AHCA awards 24 individuals to first and second teams of All-Americans from the East and West regions. All-Americans are selected by men's hockey coaches who are members of the AHCA and sponsored by RBK Hockey, an international leader in hockey equipment. Awards were announced on Saturday in Elmira, N.Y.
Johnson, Augsburg's team leader in total scoring (49 points), ranks first nationally in total scoring (1.96 points per game) and first in assists per game (1.44) among all NCAA Division III players (collegehockeystats.net). Johnson led the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in both overall games and conference games only (32 points) scoring, as well as assists in overall (36) and league games only (23). He also had 13 goals, second-best on the team. Johnson earned MIAC Player of the Week honors twice this season and was named to the All-MIAC squad for the second straight season.
In two seasons of hockey at Augsburg (50 games), Johnson has compiled 23 goals and 61 assists for 84 points. He transferred to Augsburg after playing his first season (five games) at Division I Michigan Tech. He had at least one goal or one assist in 23 of Augsburg's 25 games this season, with multiple-point games 14 times. He had six-points (two goals, four assists) in a 7-4 win over Wisconsin-Superior on Jan. 13, and closed his campaign with 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in Augsburg's final two series of the season.
The Augsburg men's hockey team, coached by Mike Schwartz, finished 9-13-3 overall and 5-8-3 in MIAC play in 2005-06. Augsburg had several big victories during the season, including a 7-4 win over then-No. 2-ranked St. Norbert (Wis.) on Nov. 5 and a 7-4 win at then-No. 11-ranked Wisconsin-Superior on Jan. 13. In MIAC play, Augsburg swept Concordia-Moorhead and also claimed league wins over Gustavus, St. Maryâs and Hamline.
