Deadline extended to Feb. 12

The Aftermath of WWII in Germany – May 2010
Encounter postwar Germany and Poland by examining Eastern Europeans' shifting experiences of and responses to World War II and its aftermath. Reflect on how people made sense of suffering and how memory should be embedded in everyday life. Visit Berlin, the former East Germany, Poland, including Danzig, Warsaw, Krakow and Auschwitz. Led by Jacqueline deVries and Robert Cowgill. Courses: HIS 195: The Aftermath of World War II AND ENL 270: Rights of Thematic Passage

Past participants say:

"It's one thing to read about history; it's another to walk were the famous politicians, heroes, villains, geniuses, and musicians walked. You get an experience that can't be equaled in the classroom."

"Hearing lectures by local people was a significant learning experience. They gave a perspective that we would never have been able to hear had we not traveled to these locations to hear from them."

Writing and Medieval History in Scotland – May 18-June 6, 2010
Experience monastic life in a 13th-century abbey and explore key historical sites as you examine the history of medieval Scotland and practice writing creative non-fiction. Led by Phil Adamo and Colin Irvine. Courses: HIS 195: Medieval Scotland AND ENL 282: Writing Scotland in the Spring

Professor Adamo says:

"The first week of the trip will be spent living with the monks of Pluscarden Abbey. This monastery was built in 1230 AD. The monks still chant in Latin by candle-light, just as they did in the Middle Ages. There is no wi-fi connection, and no cell phone reception. This is an amazing opportunity to step back in time and experience something of medieval history as it was actually lived."

Deadline extended to Mar. 1

Sustainable Cities in North America – July 8-August 1, 2010
Compare how Minneapolis, Portland, OR, Victoria, BC and Vancouver, BC make and implement policies that promote urban sustainability as you "walk-the-talk" by using public transportation, eating locally, and living green. Led by Lars Christiansen and Nancy Fischer. Courses: Choose either SOC 111: Human Community and the Modern Metropolis, or SOC 295: Sustainable Cities in North America

Past participants say:

"Being in the cities and meeting with individuals that are working to make sustainability possible really helped me gain perspective on how much work is involved in changing cities."

"I really enjoyed the hands on learning of discussing theories and then seeing them in action in the community."
