Get a job

SEPTEMBER 1, 2009

Picture of man blowing leavesMany students know that getting an on-campus work study job at Augsburg used to be a matter of who you knew. While some job openings were posted on the bulletin board outside the Human Resources office on the lower level of Memorial Hall, other jobs were found simply by asking around or by knowing someone...who knew someone...who knew someone.

Starting this fall, all that has changed.

When Andrea Turner, assistant vice president of human resources, came to Augsburg last October, she found a problem that needed fixing. "Augsburg was making a promise to work study students," she said, "but the students couldn't find work."

So Turner and her staff, along with several other departments on campus, came together to make improvements.

The first step was to use technology to make finding a job at Augsburg easier for students and for hiring managers as well. This summer hiring managers were asked to create descriptions for all student jobs, which were then posted on the Human Resources website. Now students can post a resume, cover letter, and letters of reference and apply for open work study positions online, even to apply for multiple jobs at once.

"It's just like the real world," Turner said.

The system creates transparency in the area of student employment, a goal Augsburg aspired to but had not achieved. It doesn't guarantee a job but makes employment options accessible to all students.

"You don't have to go from office to office anymore asking for work," says Dionne Doering, a senior HR generalist who has been involved with the online system. "And this helps us keep our promise."

Find a job

Go to the HR website and click Student Positions to get started on your on-campus job search.

This year only, students who have received work study funds as a part of their financial aid award will have preference in the hiring system until October 1. This is to give those students an opportunity to make use of the funds they have received. Students who are unsure about their financial aid award should contact the Enrollment Center or track their financial aid online.

More changes

In addition to online job posting, students will also track their work time online using the Kronos timekeeping system—no more paper timesheets to fill out and submit. Studnets can also take advantage of direct deposit so they won't have to pick up paychecks in the Enrollment Center.

Turner says these changes, and more that may happen in the coming year, will ultimately improve the employment process at Augsburg. "Our goal is to become a model for student employment among colleges," Turner said.
