New year for wellness
For most of us, somewhere near the top of our New Year’s resolutions lies a line or two about getting into shape or losing weight. It only takes trying to find an open machine at the local club these days to see proof of this.
Along with being a personal priority, wellness has become a focus for many employers, with incentive programs and even on-site exercise or weight-reduction programs. Because such programs improve employee health and morale while reducing absenteeism and health insurance costs, corporate wellness plans create a win/win situation. Augsburg College is no different.
The college wellness committee is starting out the New Year by promoting five initiatives to help increase physical and spiritual wellness, stress management, and good nutrition among its workforce:
21-Day Challenge. Based on the notion that it takes 21 days for the psyche to form a habit, faculty and staff are challenged to pick and commit to a change (such as get more sleep or drink more water) that they would like to see happen in their life.
Augsburg Cup. Teams of 6-8 gather and challenge other teams to a friendly competition. Nearly every sport, including dodge ball and bowling, is a possibility.
Walking/Running/Biking Club. As the title suggests, sessions will be scheduled to allow participants to exercise together, share tips, and connect.
Weight Watchers at Work. Weigh-in and support one another though this popular group.
Brown Bag Luncheons. Health-related topics will be the focus of discussion in a casual setting.
Check into wellness programs at your own place of employment, and you’ll likely find the support to help your New Year’s resolutions come to fruition.
