Young People Celebrating Peace

Peace Prize Festival

More than 600 students in grades 1 through 12 came to Augsburg College on March 8 to partake in the 12th Annual Nobel Peace Prize Festival. This year the Festival honored the 2005 Laureates Mohamed ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Students from all around the Twin Cities and greater Twin Cities area filled up Si Melby Hall with sounds and sights of peace.

The Nobel Peace Prize Festival, which is affiliated with the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo, Norway, was designed to connect students in grades 1-12 who first study the work of a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and then create a related exhibit, work of art or performance to showcase their chosen Laureate. 

Nobel Laureates being honored included: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Wangari Maathai, Theodore Roosevelt, Elie Wiesle, Jody Williams, Desmond Tutu, the International Red Cross, and Jimmy Carter.

Special guests at this year’s Festival included Kjell Magne Bondevik, former prime minister of Norway and Dr. Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

Participating schools were: Burroughs Elementary, Keewaydin Elementary, Marcy Open, South High, and Washburn from Minneapolis; Como Park High, J.J.  Hill Montessori, and Longfellow Humanities Magnet from St. Paul; Clear Springs, Minnetonka; Math and Science Academy and Valley Crossing Community from Woodbury; Nerstrand Elementary, Nerstrand; Rush Creek Elementary, Maple Grove; Rutherford Elementary, Stillwater; and Concordia Language Villages, Twin Cities.
