KAUG turns up the volume

Jan. 23, 2007

KAUG

If you’ve ever walked by the KAUG radio station in the lower level of Christensen Center and seen it empty, don’t be tempted to think nothing is happening. To the contrary, there is a tremendous amount of work taking place. Beginning January 24, one change will be especially evident.

“What people don’t realize is that we have a full schedule in the evening. We play music 24/7, even though there isn’t a d.j. in there,” says senior Dan Forseth, studio manager. “We’re a decent radio station to listen to, though it may be sometimes hard to tune in, which we’re working on all the time.”

Up until now, KAUG’s radio signal has been touch and go on various parts of campus due to FCC regulations and legal issues, requiring most listeners to tune in on-line. Using money from their newly awarded budget, the station has purchased a needed piece of software. This piece has just arrived, which means the station will be more easily accessed on 91.7 FM starting the afternoon of January 24.

According to Forseth, the largest challenge that the radio station faces is getting listeners. To remedy this, KAUG is trying to fill up the program schedule and also distribute promotional materials such as their new stickers and buttons. “Our target audience is obviously the students on campus, but our real audience is anyone who can tune in. That’s why we’re trying to get many different ways for people to listen.”

Another way that KAUG has increased awareness is through its concert series, which brings local bands into the campus TV studio and records them both on audio and film, utilizing the two components of KAUG Media. So far this year they have held two and are planning on two more.A third initiative that’s early in its planning stages is to work with the cable company to secure a channel that people on campus can turn onto and listen to the radio.

“I love this organization because it’s such a wide variety of people,” says Forseth. “We have the people that want to do the sports shows, the talk shows, the rock shows, the rap shows. They all bring something to the table.”
