Staff member’s team wins baseball championship

September 10, 2007

Nate GorrWhile students were moving onto campus over Labor Day Weekend, MBA and Corporate Recruiter Nate Gorr was moving on the baseball field.

Gorr’s team, the Plato Blue Jays, won the Class C title on Monday at the amateur baseball state championship, after playing six games in four days. The team is one of over 300 amateur baseball teams in Minnesota and 200 in their class.

Gorr, who grew up between Plato, a town of 350 people, and Glencoe, has played with the Plato Blue Jays for two full seasons. Before that, he played for the Glencoe Brewers for 13 years.

“I’ve been trying to retire but am not sure if I will,” says Gorr. “It’s hard to give up. I’ve been playing since I was 4.”

On a side note, Gorr shares, “My team includes a player I coached in Little League years ago, Nic Johnson. He is our starting center fielder. His mother, Joan, is an Auggie alum.”

ESPN writer Jim Caple wrote a column this year listing Minnesota amateur baseball as number 39 on his list of 101 things all sports fans must experience before they die. It ranked not far behind the Indy 500, the Kentucky Derby, and the Boston Marathon.
