You will soon be invited to lunch at "Nabo—a neighborhood café." That's the new name for the Oren Gateway Center "eatery," which will open in the middle of August. It's the Norwegian word for "neighbor"—pronounced 'náh-bu'—with the accent on the first syllable. The name both evokes Augsburg's heritage and extends hospitality to our friends at Fairview, at the University of Minnesota, and in the Cedar-Riverside community. (There is also a restaurant in Bergen, Norway, whose owners are from neighboring Sweden.)

Also chosen is the name "Cooper’s Coffee Shop" for the Christensen Center coffee shop, giving a nod to Augsburg's early history. Cooper was the name of the farmer in Marshall, Wis., who leased a small attic room to the new and struggling Augsburg Seminary in 1870 to use as a combined classroom, chapel, and student center.

Cooper's Attic, for a time, was the name for the student area on the lower level of Christensen Center. Keeping this name alive in a different context continues the historical connection in another popular place where students, as well as faculty and staff, enjoy gathering to meet and talk.

Watch for new graphics and signage to go up on the Oren Gateway Center and in Christensen Center as Nabo and Cooper's are welcomed into Auggie culture.
