Augsburg celebrates Earth Day 2007

Earth Day 2007

Earth Day is April 22, 2007. Begun in 1970, Earth Day is a time to celebrate both the progress we have made and the challenges we face in caring for our planet. It was instigated by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin in reaction to the decline of our environment and is now celebrated in over 175 countries.

In our ongoing mission to be a wise steward of the environment, Augsburg is host to and a participant of several events surrounding the day.

On Saturday, April 21 Augsburg will be participating in a Cedar-Riverside neighborhood clean-up. Teens in the neighborhood will be putting on a skit that they wrote about terrorism and its effect on their lives (these are largely Somali youth) and will hold a panel discussion to explore the themes in the skit. After the skit and discussion, everybody in attendance will plant a single seed to represent neighborhood re-growth that will be planted in the Augsburg Community Garden (see later paragraph). People will be gathering at 9:30 a.m. at the Brian Coyle Center for the event.

On Tuesday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Augsburg is hosting the Transportation Fair to educate the community on viable alternatives to single occupancy vehicles for daily commuting. To assist commuters, Augsburg will soon be a hub for HOURCAR, an energy efficient vehicle that can be rented by the hour offering bikers and bus riders an additional mode of transportation. A deeply discounted bus and light rail pass is also available to students, faculty, and staff.

On Saturday, May 23 the Augsburg Community Garden will be unveiled. The garden which connects the campus to the surrounding community was tilled on a plot of land that could have easily been given over to a parking lot. In addition to growing food for the Campus Kitchen program, plots will be available to members of the community.

Past events:

On Saturday, April 14, over 60 Augsburg students, faculty, and staff met at Bohemian Flats Park on the Mississippi River for a river clean up and photograph to send to local members of Congress.

On Wednesday, April 18 the Augsburg community joined over 40,000 students, faculty and staff from across the country and tuned into a live, national broadcast on how colleges and universities are innovating positive solutions to the climate crisis.
