The Center for Global Education (CGE) at Augsburg College welcomes its international staff to campus and celebrates 25 years with two events this week.

Fifteen staff from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Namibia, and Nicaragua will join the 13 staff from the Office of International Programs based in Minneapolis. "As a full staff we only meet face-to-face every two years," says Regina McGoff, associate director of CGE. "Our last meetings have been in Mexico (2003) and Nicaragua (2005), so we haven’t hosted one in Minnesota since 2001."

The goals of their week together are to celebrate CGE’s 25th anniversary, renew relationships, look ahead to the future, and work on a couple of key areas that are difficult to do via phone/email.

The celebration begins on Saturday, July 21, with a day-long conference on the theme “Building a Just and sustainable World: Education for Transformation.” Dr. Pandu Hailonga van Dijk from Windoek, Namibia, will deliver the keynote speech on “Education for Decolonization.” She is the former site director for the CGE program in Namibia and is currently an assistant representative for the United Nation’s Population Fund.

Cost for the conference is $25, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch. The conference will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2730 East 31sth St., Minneapolis, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The celebration continues that evening with a Global Gala, including food, fair trade wine and appetizers from around the world a silent auction of unique items and dancing to world music. The Gala will be held in the Foss Center at Augsburg College, 625 22nd Ave. S., Minneapolis, from 7 to 11 p.m. Cost for the evening is $40.

Since 1982, more than 10,000 people have participated in CGE’s semester and short-term programs in more than 40 countries in the Asia/Pacific region, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, southern Africa, Latin America, and the United States.
