“Aloha, Say the Pretty Girls”

March 9 , 2007

Aloha

The lives of strangers and friends, lovers and acquaintances all collide in New York, Alaska, and Hawaii in “Aloha, Say the Pretty Girls” by Naomi Iizuka, the newest Theatre Department offering in the Foss Studio Theatre.

Described as “a fantastical picaresque featuring a komodo dragon, a hula dancer, an Incan mummy, many piñatas, and one wild dog,” the play runs through Friday, March 16 at 7 p.m. every evening.

Admission is $1 for Augsburg students, $5 for the general public and $4 for ACTC faculty, staff, and students. For reservations call 612-330-1257

Stage Manager Amber Davis says “All of the designers for the production are Augsburg theatre students. It's such an awesome experience because we're creating this piece all by ourselves, with the help of Steve Busa, the guest director.” Busa is the Artistic Director of Red Eye Theatre in Minneapolis, an alternative multidisciplinary arts center dedicated to the creation and presentation of new works.

“Aloha” is a highly visual production. “There is a surfboard, axe, suitcases, stuffed fish, beach chairs, beer cases, snowboard, piñatas, a komodo dragon, and a pineapple, to name just a few,” says Davis.  The audience will be able to see all of the props. Prop boxes will be placed on stage and they don't hide the fact that a play is going on.

The Foss Studio Theatre was a recent development in the Theatre department with the intention of providing students a venue for the creation of alternative and experimental works.
