Marianne Hirsti on campus March 4
On behalf of the Music Department, I am delighted to announce a day of Masterclasses
with Norwegian soprano Marianne Hirsti, this Friday, March 4, from 9am-4pm
in Sateren Auditorium. Ms. Hirsti is a distinguished performer with an international
resume which includes opera, concert and recital appearances. She is in the
twin cities to sing the soprano solos in a new St. Matthew Passion by Norwegian
composer Trond Kverno, at St. Olaf College (March 2,) and at Central Lutheran
Church in downtown Minneapolis (March 3.)
The Masterclass will feature performances Art Songs sung by Augsburg students, Schubert Club winners and professional teacher and soprano Mary Laymon from MacPhail. We will begin the day with solo songs by Franz Schubert presented by the Augsburg German Diction class, from 9-noon, with a break for Chapel. After lunch, from around 1-4, we will hear songs by Poulenc, Brahms, Strauss and Edvard Grieg, including Grieg's great song cycle "Haugtussa" based on texts by Arne Garborg. Ms. Hirsti will critique each individual performer, offering suggestions on style, interpretation, pronunciation, and so forth, based on her many years of study and extensive performing experience.
We are very grateful to the Schubert Club for providing additional funding for this event.
We welcome you to stop by for an hour, or join us for the entire day. I'm sure all will enjoy the fine singing, fantastic poetry and beautiful music which will be shared! Please contact Sonja Thompson (ext. 1277) with any further questions.
