Augsburg Choir tours the Midwest

Mar. 26, 2001

The Augsburg Choir, from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn., will tour through Menomonie, Wisconsin; De Kalb, Illinois; Muskegon, Michigan; and Clinton, Iowa from April 3-7, 2001. The group will also perform their home concert on Sunday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at Hoversten Chapel, Augsburg College.

The 55-voice ensemble, praised for its versatility and musicality, performs a diverse repertoire. In this five-day tour, the choir will perform works that create musical images of God and the Cross, from Russia and South America, and of the present day. The concert will feature works by Johannes Brahms, Pavel Cheskokov, Knut Nystedt, Jozef Swider, Jester Hairston, and Leland Sateren. The Augsburg Choir performs under the direction of Peter Hendrickson. The Augsburg Choir has a rich history of notable performances, including performing before King Harald V of Norway when he visited Augsburg College in October of 1995. The choir most recently toured through the Southwest in 2000. The choir upholds the college's long history of choral excellence. The choral tradition at Augsburg encompasses not only the mission of the College as part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, but also the legacy of noted conductors like Leland Sateren, who was a strong force in premiering new choral works by Scandinavian composers. Augsburg College is a private liberal arts college, founded in 1869, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The campus is located in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, which is one of the country's acknowledged cultural centers. The College's mission is to nurture future leaders in service to the world by providing quality educational opportunities that are based in the liberal arts and shaped by the faith and values of the Christian tradition. Augsburg's nearly 3,000 students come from diverse religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
