Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to speak Wednesday, April 21 at Augsburg College on "Our Environmental Destiny"

Apr. 14, 1999

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will give a lecture titled "Our Environmental Destiny" at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 21 at Augsburg College in an Earth Day celebration kickoff that is free and open to the public.

Kennedy will speak from 5-6 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel of the Foss Center (located at Riverside and 22nd avenues South in Minneapolis). A 30-minute moderated question and answer period with Kennedy will immediately follow the lecture.

Kennedy is chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council. He is also a clinical professor and supervising attorney at the Environmental Litigation Clinic at Pace University School of Law in New York. A former assistant district attorney in New York City, Kennedy has worked on several political campaigns and was state coordinator for Edward M. Kennedy's 1980 presidential campaign.

Earth Day's 29th anniversary is April 22. Former Sen. Gaylord Nelson (Wis.) was the chief organizer for the first event, when an estimated 20 million Americans participated in environmental rallies, demonstrations and other activities. Earth Day was modeled after the anti-Vietnam War teach-ins of the late 1960s.

Kennedy's visit to Augsburg is sponsored by the Augsburg Student Activities Council; Augsburg Association of Student Film Makers; Augsburg Sociology Club; Augsburg Speech and Debate Team; Augsburg Department of Student Affairs; and Augsburg's Office of Student Activities.
