February: Faculty Senate vote (10 in support; 1 opposed; 0 abstentions)
March: Faculty first reading

MNUDL Needs Your Help: Fight Funding Cuts at Saint Paul Public Schools

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program in Augsburg University, is facing a major challenge to debate in St. Paul: a $107 million district deficit and looming budget cuts for debate. That puts 400 middle and high school students’ ability to debate at risk, meaning they’ll miss out on the crucial benefits debate provides. They deserve the same chance for academic growth, social and emotional learning, and leadership skills that their peers in well-resourced suburban schools, private schools, and other local districts receive through debate!

Our sincere thanks to Vineeta Sawkar for hosting our Executive Director, Amy Cram Helwich, on WCCO Radio to discuss our #SaveSPPSDebate campaign.

Please take 5 minutes to hear why debate’s in jeopardy in Saint Paul, and why it matters:

What You Can Do To Help:

Help fight debate funding cuts! We’ve provided talking points, templates, contacts, and social media images you can use at this link – but remember, your personal testimony about why debate matters in your neighborhood is the most effective.

Students – Please take the Textbook Affordability Survey

submitted by alexank@augsburg.edu

Augsburg’s Textbook Affordability Working Group invites you to fill out our brief survey about how well you are able to afford the books and other materials required for your classes. We’ll use this information to help us understand whether the cost of course materials is a barrier for Auggies, so it’s important to hear from as many students as possible.

The survey is anonymous, although it does use your email address to make sure we only get one response per person. If you have questions about the survey or the Textbook Affordability Working Group, please contact Karen Alexander (alexank@augsburg.edu) or Sara Fillbrandt (fillbran@augsburg.edu)

Get Your Art Featured on the Cover of the Thó Wiŋ Magazine

submitted by endol@augsburg.edu

The Thó Wiŋ Literary and Arts Magazine is looking for art to feature on the cover of this year’s issue. The covers (both front and back) will be approximately 9×9″, so art must fit a square ratio. Pieces depicting themes related to Minnesota, Minneapolis, and especially our magazine’s namesake, Blue Star Woman, will be prioritized (more info about Blue Star Woman can be accessed at our website, https://thowin-magazine.com). Please send submissions from your Augsburg email to twmagazine@augsburg.edu in .pdf, .png, or .jpg format.
We are approaching our printing deadline, so please submit as soon as possible!

Draft of HLC Reaffirmation of Accreditation Assurance Argument

submitted by matz@augsburg.edu

Augsburg is on ten-year accreditation cycle with the Higher Learning Commission and we are scheduled for our ten-year review in 2024 (site visit scheduled for October 21-22). As a component of this review, members of the HLC Reaffirmation of Accreditation Steering Committee have been hard at work preparing Augsburg’s Reaffirmation of Accreditation Assurance Argument. A working draft of the document is now posted on the HLC Accreditation Moodle site (see the Documents and Drafts section). Should you wish to review the document, the Committee would welcome any comments or suggestions you might have. There is a form to submit comments near the top of the Moodle site. We are particularly interested in pieces of evidence that might be used to back up statements about or practices.

Drum Workshop 4/18 at 7 p.m.

submitted by mendezm@augsburg.edu

“Afro-Indigenous Rhythms: A Bilingual Drumming and Percussion Workshop with Jonathan Alarcon”

April 18th from 7-8:30pm
Anderson Music Hall M2 Band Room

About Jonathan: “Jonathan Alarcón is a professional drummer in a wide range of musical styles, with his first love being jazz. He is well known as a session drummer and teacher and has toured in Mexico, South America, Europe, Taiwan and Japan with Hibridúz, the jazz band that he co-founded in 2005. In the last few years Jonathan has spent time studying and collaborating with the Garifuna drumming master Chichimán. His experiences in the Garífuna community have inspired him to become a spokesperson for the Garifuna and to highlight their strength and resilience in the face of on-going repression and social injustices. He is now sharing presentations in various universities focused on the importance of recognizing the unique characteristics of this afro-indigenous community.”

In this drumming workshop, Jonathan will lead participants on an exploration of the drumming patterns and unique characteristics of Garífuna musical styles.

All are welcomed to attend!
