Hagfors Center Construction: 100 Days of Safety

This week marks a milestone of 100 safe work days on the Hagfors Center construction site. We thank everyone for your help in keeping the construction site and surrounding area safe. Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) Submissions

The new AAC proposal forms are now live! The following proposal forms are now all-online:
-Course Proposals
-Major/Minor Revision Proposals
-New Academic Initiatives Proposals
-Academic Policy Proposals

Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. A proposal will be added to a meeting agenda when all submission requirements have been met. Items can be added to a meeting agenda up until one week before the meeting; the deadline for making an agenda is 5pm on the Monday preceding an AAC meeting.

Course proposals for Spring 2017 implementation should be submitted within the next two weeks. Proposals will not be accepted after registration opens in early November.

It's Time to Find the Writing Lab

You probably have papers, applications, or personal statements due soon. Tutors in the Writing Lab can help! The lab is located in Lindell Library, street level just left of the circulation desk. Tutors will help any Augsburg student with any writing task. Just bring your work in progress (hard copy).

Join Augsburg Data Analytics Team In Competition

Are you interested in Data Analytics / Data Science? Augsburg is currently recruiting a team of students to participate in the MinnAnalytics Undergraduate Data Analytics Competition held this fall. Team members will work with a given problem / data set during the month of October and then present their results in competition on November 5th. In addition, team members will have the opportunity to participate in a keynote dinner, network with peers from other MN institutions and attend an informal job fair.

Students can contact Marc Isaacson (isaacson@augsburg.edu) to indicate your interest. Faculty and staff can also nominate possible students and I will follow up with them. Team registrations are due by 9/30 so don't hesitate!

Memorial Blood Center will be on campus next Wednesday 10/5 and if you prefer to schedule an appointment in person, stop by Christensen Center Tuesday 9/27 from 11:30 - 12:30 to do just that. CWC and staff from Memorial Blood Center will be available to schedule your donation time.

2016-2017 Torstenson Community Scholars Selected

The Department of Sociology is excited to announce that Emily Campbell, Jennifer Kochaver, Ellen Sachs and Mark Daniels have been selected as 2016-2017 Torstenson Community Scholars. The scholars will spend the year researching the impact of oil exploration on residents of northwestern North Dakota. Their work will include a spring research trip to the area to conduct interviews with local residents.

The Torstenson Scholars program has been made possible through the generosity of Mark Johnson, a 1975 Metro-Urban Studies graduate of Augsburg College. Mr. Johnson's gift and the formation of the community scholars program are in memory of Professor Joel Torstenson '38, who was instrumental in founding Augsburg's Department of Sociology.

Stop by the CWC table in Christensen Center on Monday, October 3, between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.; or stop by the Center for Wellness & Counseling in Anderson Residence Hall on Wednesday, October 5, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Complete a free 10-15 minute screening for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. No appointments necessary. You will meet face-to-face with a counselor to discuss the results and receive information about resources on- and off-campus to help address your concerns. Faculty and Staff Training: Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring

The Provost's Office, Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Committee, and Human Resources are partnering to offer a training session for faculty and staff on Minimizing Unconscious Bias in Hiring which will be held on Tuesday, October 11 in OGC 100, from 9:00 a.m. - noon.

The training will include a video and discussion facilitated by Jeffrey Cookson of Language and Culture Worldwide. We will be discussing unconscious bias and it's impact on the hiring and selection process and strategies we can use to de-bias situations.

Workshop
The Soup, Gender, and Sexuality series is a variety of events specific to LGBTQIA+ identities. The purpose of these events is to stir in depth conversation across campus about identities that often go unrecognized in academic settings.

The topic for this upcoming event will be "Queering Art: Gender Fluidity Throughout History". Amo Mohamed and Taya Mitchell will be critiquing systems and structures over a warm, delicious meal. Join us in the Marshall Room (Second Floor of the Christensen Center) from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Come for soup and intriguing conversation!

Speaker Bios

Camille Valentino
Taya Mitchell is a grassroots community organizer that works in the community to bring forth change to transgender lives. Taya has led and facilitated workshops and trainings focused on gender expression, binaries, and identity with the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition. She's also worked with Outfront MN to bring forth policy change that affects transgender lives. Taya is also a performer; singer, actress, and dancer and lights the stage on fire with her magnetic presence and smooth voice.

Amo Mohamed
Amo Mohamaed is a core member of the Black Liberation Project a grassroots, a Black youth led collective that hosts a multitude of events; ranging from healing spaces, to political actions, as well as their regularly scheduled membership meetings. They currently work at Minnesota Organizing for Change as a Youth Organizer, specializing in communications and civic and political engagement. In addition to this, they have acted as a community liaison with the Minnesota Museum of American Arts in their youth division, as a part of their efforts to diversify their artistic space. In the past, they have also worked with Climate Generation to address the effects of climate change on black youth. Currently, they facilitate workshops on whiteness, white privilege, white supremacy, and antiblackness in high schools throughout the Twin Cities; in schools such as South High School, Southwest High School, and Central High School. Recently they were a featured speaker in the "4-H YELLO! 2016 Conference" through the University of Minnesota, where they spoke to high school youth from rural areas of Minnesota about "Whiteness and White Privilege". Amo was born in Kenya at Dadaab refugee camp. Amo loves funny worms and Warsaw Shire.

Are you interested in learning about Muslim Identities in Minnesota?

In the 21st century there is a plethora of clichés, stereotypes, and over-generalizations about Muslims in Minnesota, where there are also a variety of different ways of being Muslim.

Join Professor Cawo Abdi and Ph.D. candidate Nahid Khan to explore the diversity of Muslims in Minnesota today and the many contexts shaping their lives and identities. Professor Abdi will draw on her recently published book on the Somali diaspora, Elusive Jannah, and Khan will present data from her research on the portrayal of Islam and Muslims in Twin Cities media over the last several decades.

The event is FREE and OPEN to the public!

Open Streets - West Bank - October 1

Augsburg is hosting a stage and much more for Open Streets this Saturday, October 1, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on the corner of 6th Street and 21st Avenue near Jimmy Johns.

-Music by several different artists including an Augsburg band.
-A fashion show by the Sisterhood Boutique
-Spoken word by neighborhood youth

And, much of Cedar Riverside and the U of M streets will be closed to traffic and open to fun, fun, fun ...and food galore.
