Civic Studies Launch TOMORROW, 8 a.m., OM 105

The launch of Augsburg's Civic Studies Initiative is tomorrow! All campus and community members are welcome.

Launch of Augsburg Civic Studies: How the idea of citizens as co-creators changes our thinking about the election
Thursday, September 22
8:00-9:30 a.m.
Old Main 105

The election brings resignation, anger, disgust, as well as activism. The Pew Research Center reports "for the first time in more than two decades, a majority of voters express dissatisfaction with their choices for president." When NBC News asked voters for their views of the election, they used terms like "skunk," "rotten eggs," and "garbage." Augsburg's launch of the Civic Studies Initiative will show how "citizens as co-creators," by emphasizing peoples' agency, offers new resources for thinking and acting constructively and effectively on the election and related questions such as immigration, race, gender, sexual orientation, and inequality.

The discussion follows the successful Hot Button Topics workshop organized by CTL and the Sabo Center last March, which showed how a co-creative civic agency framework generates new possibilities for working though hot button topics.

The discussion on September 22 will include:

- Harry Boyte on "What Is Civic Studies?"
- A student panel on experiences in empowering public work
- Michael Lansing on his civic agency history course
- Small groups brainstorming on how "citizens as co-creators" can lead to different kinds of discussions and actions on the election
- Margaret Finders on the application process for Civic Studies fellows

Read more about this event and the Civic Studies Initiative here: http://inside.augsburg.edu/ctl/about/civic-studies-initiative/

Co-sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Education Department, and the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship.

A brief meeting with the writer and director as well as refreshments will prelude this film screening beginning at 3:45 p.m.

The film description is as follows:
John Red Elk hears from his relatives down in Minneapolis that his Uncle Norton is dead and vows to go to the big city to find out what really happened to him. At its heart, "The Jingle Dress" is a contemporary story of a Native American family that moves from their rural home on the reservation in northern Minnesota to the faster paced urban environment of Minneapolis. We follow the Red Elk family as they experience city culture through their unvarnished perspective, as well as gain insight into their Indigenous culture and traditions -Bill Eigen (imdb.com).

Documentary Jingle Dress Screening Wednesday, 9/21

Jingle Dress (William Eigen, 2014)

The Augsburg Native American Film Series is happy to co-sponsor with Augsburg's Student groups -- AISA (Augsburg Indigenous Student Association) and Marginalized Voices in Film and Media -- this free film screening on campus. This feature length film is set and filmed in Minnesota and William Eigen will be there to talk with you about the film!

Desert Storm veteran John Red Elk gets word from his relatives that his long lost Uncle Norton is dead and vows to go down to the big city to find out what really happened to him. At its heart 'The Jingle Dress' is an immigrant story of an Ojibwe family that moves from the rural setting of a Reservation in northern Minnesota down to the heart of the urban 'hood' of Minneapolis. We follow the Red Elk family as they discover this new culture and through their experiences and unvarnished perspective we are able to view our own culture with fresh eyes, as well as gain insight into their ancient, indigenous society.
-Bill Eigen
