Faculty: Working Toward Tenure or Promotion?

For over 15 years, the Center for Teaching and Learning has been providing workshops to help candidates for 3rd year, tenure and promotion review prepare their portfolios. This faculty development session is designed to provide relevant content, suggestions for best practices, and support. Our experience has been that learning more can be especially beneficial for faculty a year in advance of their review. We also welcome all faculty members looking for support around NNT review and/or building a professional portfolio for the future.

The workshop is May 20 and is presented by Diane Pike and Jill Dawes. Please contact pike@augsburg.edu by May 1 if you have specific questions and to let us know if you will be attending.

Interested in Grad School? Sign Up for GRE Prep

Want to Go to Grad School? You May Need the GRE.

The GRE is a standardized test that is required for many graduate school applications. Augsburg College offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by Augsburg faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course students complete sample test questions and receive in-depth feedback and instruction. The registration fee also includes a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh.

Last Week of Spring Term in the Writing Lab

First, thanks to the wonderful tutors, it is likely the WL will have conducted around 2,000 tutoring sessions this academic year and summer. That is testament to the good work these students do!
The Lab will operate on its regular schedule through next Wednesday evening's shift. So, remaining sessions this semester are Friday, 4:30-7; Sunday, 5-8; Monday: 11:10-1:40 and 6:30-9:30; Tuesday: 12:30-3; 3:30-6; and 7:30-10; and Wednesday 3:30-6:00 and 6:30-9.

Starting on May 9, hours will be 4:30-7 on Mondays and Thursdays. These hours will be constant through the second summer session, ending on August 19 (with a break over the July 4 holiday, in accordance with the class schedule.)

Farewell to Dixie Ohlander

After more than 16 years of dedicated service to Lindell Library, Dixie Ohlander has decided to retire. All are invited to a party in Dixie's honor this Thursday, April 28 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in Lindell Library room L301. Refreshments will be served.

This one hour training session covers how to use the new online system and provides guidance on writing effective performance goals. This year staff will be asked to complete a self-appraisal and set goals, so this training isn't to be missed!

Sad News About a Colleague

Dear friends,

It is with great sadness that I send news that our colleague, Professor Barbara Andersen, passed away recently. Barbara taught in the English Department at Augsburg from 1969 to 1997. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Northwestern College, and her master's degree from Northwestern University. She was awarded tenure in 1976, and later promoted to associate professor.

Barbara was an inspiration to many of her students and colleagues as well. In her J-term course with Barbara, Grow Old Along with Me, Auggie English alum and ASU Professor Devoney Looser noted, "She inspired me intellectually and made me re-see the potential for vibrancy in old age. ... It was incredible. She was a great teacher. I was so lucky in my Augsburg teachers. There aren't enough thank yous."

Longtime friend, mentor and department colleague, Doug Green reflected on Barbara's impact on his own life, "If I grow old with grace, humor, and an undying passion for living as fully as possible, despite the vicissitudes of aging, it will be owing in large part to Barb's example."

Barbara was deeply, quietly immersed in her teaching and the campus community. We mourn the loss of this endearing colleague.

Career Quick Stop is Winding Down

Students! This week will be the last week of Career Quick Stop for the semester. Stop by Suite 100 of the Christensen Center Tuesday or Wednesday between 2:30-4:00 p.m. These walk-in hours are meant for quick career questions and short resume reviews. Appointments will be limited to 15 minutes and students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Quick Stop will resume in the fall!

Hagfors Center Groundbreaking

You're invited to join the groundbreaking ceremony for the Norman and Evangeline Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion on Friday, April 29 at 4 p.m. The celebration will be a way to close the academic year and commemorate the launch of this transformational project.

Among the distinguished guests at the ceremony will be Norm and Vangie Hagfors, whose generosity helped make the new signature academic building a reality, and Regent Emeritus Mike Good '71, who chaired the CSBR campaign to its successful conclusion. Following the groundbreaking, all are invited to attend the Baccalaureate Service in Hoversten Chapel at 5 p.m.

The ceremony will be held at site of the Hagfors Center: 21st Avenue South and 7th Street South

Auggies Named National Science Foundation Fellows

Fikre Beyene '16, Physics and Allison Zank '14, Chemistry have been named National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows for 2016-2017. Fikre and Allison will receive a $34,000 annual stipend and $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to assist them in achieving a research-based master's or doctoral degree. This year, there were close to 17,000 applicants for the awards, and only 2,000 selected Fellows. Sadie Tetrick '16, Physics & Mathematics, was named Honorable Mention. An NSF GRFP indicates to graduate schools that these students are top undergraduate scientists in the nation. Congratulations to these students and the departments who mentored them.

Below is a small snapshot of each of these students' amazing science accomplishments.

Fikre Beyene has conducted Space Physics research with Dr. Engebretson and Dr. Murr since the summer after his freshman year. Over his four years here, he has been named a Sundquist Scholar, McNair Scholar, AugSTEM Scholar, Calc Workshop Teaching Assistant, Rossing Physics Scholar, and Goldwater Scholar. He will be entering the Astro Physics PhD program at UCLA this fall.

Allison Zank conducted summer research on biofilms with Dr. Bankers-Fulbright as well as at the University of Minnesota's Dental School. She has also spent time conducting research in industry. Over her time here, she was named an URGO Scholar, McNair Scholar, AugSTEM Scholar, and Goldwater Scholar. She plans to pursue a Master's degree in Clinical Microbiology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this fall.

Sadie Tetrick began her space physics research here on campus with Dr. Murr and Dr. Engebretson and went on to conduct summer research at Dartmouth University and the University of Minnesota. During her time here, Sadie has been a Sundquist Scholar, President of Society of Physics Students, Co-founder of Women in Physics, and a member of Pi Mu Epsilon. Sadie will be joining the PhD program in Physics at the University of Iowa this fall.

Cameron Olson '17 Named Goldwater Scholar

Augsburg Physics major, Cameron Olson '17, was awarded a $7,500 Goldwater Scholarship, the premier STEM award for undergraduates. Each college in the country is able to nominate four undergraduate STEM students, and this year, 252 awardees were chosen from 1,150 applicants nationwide. Cameron has conducted space physics research here on campus with Dr. Engebretson and will do a second summer of research this year at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab under the mentorship of Augsburg physics alumnus, Dr. Brian Anderson '82.

Chang Moua Awarded "Mentor of the Year"

Chang Moua, a BSW senior student, was awarded "Mentor of the Year" for the PASS Mentor Program. A banquet was held on Thursday, April 21, in the Chapel from 6:30pm-9:00pm. Chang was selected as the first ever "Mentor of the Year." During the banquet, he received a clock plaque as recognition of his hard work and dedication to the PASS Mentor Program. In addition to this honor, Chang was also recognized as a Dean's List student and an ASIA scholar. The BSW Program congratulates Chang on these achievements!
