Reading the Echo in Arizona: Archives Online

Lindell Library holds many treasures of Augsburg's shared history: The Echo student newspaper, back to 1898; the Augsburgian yearbook, starting in 1916; and Augsburg Now and its alumni-publication ancestors. All these and more are part of the Archives' physical collection. But what if you want to go beyond paper and page through, say, the 1983 Augsburgian — in your office, at home, or on vacation? Thanks to the library's Digital Initiative Project, begun by librarian Bill Wittenbreer in 2013, you can read many of your favorite Augsburg publications online anywhere, and more are being added all the time. Want to know more? Of course you do! Faculty and staff (and the wider Augsburg community) are invited to Bill's informative session on exploring our new Archives Web page at http://library.augsburg.edu/archives/ and all the ways you can access our digital collections. Bring your lunch, and your curiosity!

From President Paul Pribbenow: Martin Olav Sabo

Dear Friends,

I write with great sadness today, as we mourn the loss of U.S. Representative Martin Sabo, a 1959 alumnus of Augsburg College, a national leader and public servant, and an inspirational legend dedicated to revitalizing the role of higher education in equipping students for active engagement in citizenship and democracy.

Martin led a full and accomplished life, and the many news items posted online today about him are a testament to the impact he made in our community and nation. We have updated our own website, augsburg.edu/news, with a tribute to the remarkable work and contributions that Martin and his wife, Sylvia, have made to Augsburg.

Martin was elected to serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives just one year after graduating, with honors, from Augsburg College. He went on to serve for 28 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, retiring in 2007. During his time in Congress, he also served for 12 years on the College's Board of Regents.

Following Martin's retirement from public service, Augsburg founded the Martin Olav Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship. The Sabo Center is committed to fostering civic agency and engagement on campus and in our communities. Augsburg is deeply honored to be able to carry on Martin's legacy with this important work.

Martin remained active at Augsburg throughout his life. In fact, we had the great fortune to celebrate his 78th birthday with him on campus just two weeks ago. Our hearts go out to Sylvia as well as to Martin and Sylvia's daughters, Karin (Sabo) Mantor '86 and Julie Sabo '90, and their families. The family has requested that memorials be sent to the Sabo Endowment Fund at Augsburg College or to Trinity Lutheran Congregation. As soon as memorial service details are confirmed, we will provide that information as well.

Augsburg has been blessed by the life and work of Martin Sabo. He will be greatly missed and long remembered.
