Students: 10-Day Fellowship in Israel App Due 3/1

The MINNE Fellows program will select one Augsburg student for a free 10-day fellowship in Israel from May 2-13, 2016. The goal of the program is to foster greater understanding between people and to educate college students about the Holocaust. The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers. The visit to Israel will include a tour of Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust museum, additional Holocaust educational programming as well as touring the sites of Israel.

The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers.

-MINNE covers flight and land costs as well as granting students a $50/day per diem provided while the student is in Israel.
-Applicants must be U.S. citizens and registered for full time classes at Augsburg with at least one year left on campus. Students must be sophomores or above with a 3.0+ GPA.

Thurs - Difficult Discussions in the Classroom

The next CTL workshop, "Using Difficult Discussion in the Classroom to Enhance Students' Higher-Order Thinking Skills," is on Thursday, February 25.

Many courses offer students and faculty the opportunity to discuss difficult issues and enhance student learning through the intellectual give-and-take of an engaged conversation, but what if those conversations turn personal or angry? How can you assist learners to actively challenge and engage ideas and issues, not each other (or you)? This workshop is intended to assist participants in identifying their goals for using classroom discussions and then discuss models for how to teach learners how to productively engage in difficult discussions.

Register Now to Present at Zyzzogeton

Zyzzogeton 2016 Registration Deadline is March 10!

Zyzzogeton, Augsburg's annual student research symposium, will be held on Thursday, April 14, from 3-5 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel.

Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register and submit an abstract online at www.augsburg.edu/urgo by March 10 (click maroon box on right side of URGO homepage). Please work closely with your research mentors on your poster.

URGO and McNair will be hosting a Research Poster workshop where you can bring your working draft and receive one-on-one feedback and help on Wednesday, March 23, from 4:30-6 p.m. in SVE 204. We will be providing dinner, so please RSVP to urgo@augsburg.edu if you plan to come.

Wed. Feb. 24 - Critical Thinking Workshop x2

When was the last time you attended a seminar on teaching active reading and critical thinking? Could your students improve their skills in these areas? This spring Gen Ed will host opportunities to strengthen our teaching and improve programmatic outcomes.

This trio of workshops begins on Wednesday with CRITICAL THINKING, led by Religion professor Mary Lowe.

Critical Thinking: How to Teach It Well

In this workshop faculty will be briefly introduced to Bloom and Costa's models of critical thinking. Faculty are asked to bring an assignment, quiz, exam, or activity that they are currently using and then we will work on integrating the prompts and levels of critical thinking into these assignments or exams.

The Honors Council, the governing body of Augsburg's Honors Program, is seeking nominations for a new member. The Honors Council is comprised of 8 students and 8 faculty. The Council meets once a month with the Honors Director to determine program policies and curriculum, and collectively decides which students will be admitted to the Program.

Augsburg's annual Assessment Day is tomorrow, February 23.

The Assessment period, 10:50am-12:50pm, will begin with lunch. Faculty and staff, please RSVP to kilgorem@augsburg.edu.

Curricular Assessment (KEN 303) will begin with a presentation and discussion of the data on oral communication and quantitative reasoning. In the second half, Brian Rood, Psychology, and Joe Underhill, Political Science, will lead discussion on how to collect qualitative data.

Co-curricular Assessment will hold staff workshops next door in Kennedy 305.

Scholastic Connections Applications Available

Scholarship Opportunity for Undergraduate Students of Color

Applications are now being accepted for Scholastic Connections for 2016-17. Successful applicants for 5 available positions will receive a $5000 scholarship and be paired with an alum of color who will serve as the student's mentor.

Eligibility requirements, information about Scholastic Connections and applications are available at the SC web page. Go to Inside Augsburg, A to Z Directory, Scholastic Connections. http://www.augsburg.edu/connections and click on Application Requirements.

Students who receive full tuition scholarships: Promise Scholars, Act 6 Scholars, full tuition President Scholars, etc. are NOT eligible for SC.

Applications and letters of recommendation are due March 1.

Attention Faculty and Staff: If you know of a student of color who could benefit from a $5000 scholarship and work with a mentor, please nominate the student for Scholastic Connections. Great Colleges to Work For Survey: Participate

As previously announced, Augsburg College is participating in the 2016 Great Colleges to Work For survey. The survey opens Monday, February 22 and will remain open until Friday, March 4. Eligible participants will receive an email from ModernThink which will contain a survey invitation and link to the survey.

Important things to note:
- Survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
- Your responses to the survey will be completely confidential. ModernThink LLC, an independent survey firm, will not provide Augsburg College with any information that would enable us to trace survey data back to any one individual.
- Your participation is very valuable and desired, but voluntary.

Renew Your FAFSA by May 1st

It's that time again! The FAFSA application for the 2015-2016 year is now available for students returning to Augsburg for the 2015-2016 academic year. The FAFSA is the application required to determine your eligibility for access to financial aid during your time at Augsburg, and must be renewed every year.

May 1st is the deadline to apply for financial aid at Augsburg. All Day College students must submit their application by this date or risk losing some of the aid that may be available to you.

File your taxes early to ensure that you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing your FAFSA this year. This function pre-populates your tax information into the application, which reduces your chances of being selected for verification later on. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is available for use on the FAFSA 2-3 weeks after electronically filing your taxes, and 6-8 weeks after filing paper taxes.

TerraCycle

The Environmental Student Leaders Action Network has introduced TerraCycle bins to the Urness bathrooms. The bins will collect personal care products such as: toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower products, deodorant, etc. The floor that collects the most wins a PIZZA PARTY! The competition ends on March 10th! There is another TerraCycle bin for community use in Christensen.

Informal Art Critique Tuesday at 4:30 pm

Have a idea for an piece but uncertain if it works or not? Uncertain about a poem or story? Something amiss in a performance piece? Is your voice off? If you have current work but are uncertain and would like to discuss in an informal setting? Then come present your work an informal critique session, a new project Art Club is initiating this semester.

Interested students should meet in the basement of Old Main at 4:30 pm this Tuesday, February 23rd and be joined by students from all creative disciplines to discuss, respond and share their thoughts about their projects. Susan Boecher, Art Faculty member will also be on hand to share her perspective.

This new project is based on Art Club's interest to work with other student groups and a expand its direction to include student's creative work from other departments. Each year, Augsburg College celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium. The event falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments. More than 80 students participate each year, showcasing their research. A "zyzzogeton" is a green leaf-hopper as well as the last word in the Webster Collegiate Dictionary, which is a fitting symbol to mark the end of the academic year. The public is welcome, so feel free to invite family, friends, and those from the community to this exciting event!

And there will be crowd favorites nachos and Italian sodas to boot!

Commencement is the culmination of our students' time at Augsburg College. We want the experience for our graduates and their families and friends to be as enjoyable and seamless as possible. This year, all Commencement activities will be consolidated into one day–Saturday, April 30, 2016. Please visit the Commencement Website (www.augsburg.edu/commencement) for full details.

Registration & Ticketing:
Registration and ticketing will be available starting at 7:00am CST on Monday, February 22, 2016.

All graduates will need to register to participate using the form located on the Commencement website. Please take a moment to log-in and tell us about your plans to participate---It is helpful for us to know even if you do not plan to march in the ceremony.

Once you register in the system, you'll be permitted to request your guaranteed tickets. Each graduate may request up to four (4) guaranteed tickets at this time. Extra tickets will be released in late March, as they become available. Further notifications will be made about dates and times of extra ticket distribution. We encourage you to log-in and get an account set up ahead of time so that you can easily utilize the system when tickets become available.

Augsburg Art Club Art Sale - Support Local Art

The Augsburg Art Club is hosting it's first annual Art Sale! Original artwork created by Augsburg students will be on sale from March 6th to the 31st in the Fish Bowl Gallery. To purchase art on the spot, please attend our reception on March 10th from 5:30 to 7:30pm in the Fish Bowl Gallery. If you are unable to attend the reception, head on over to the Fish Bowl anytime during the show for more information, or contact Devin Johnston at johnston@augsburg.edu. Artwork will range in price from $10-$50, cash or check only. We hope to see you there!

Oscar Party Invite

Marginalized Voices in Film and Media and ASAC are hosting an Oscar Party on Sunday, February 28th in the student lounge at 6pm. There will be games, food, a red carpet and a photographer. We will also be having a short discussion about lack of representation in the film industry. It is a Black Tie event, but the dress code will be encouraged, not enforced.
