Engaged Department Workshop at the U of M

This event sponsored by the University of Minnesota Office for Public Engagement, Gustavus Adolphus College, and Minnesota Campus Compact is open to departmental teams or individual participants from any campus interested in integrating civic and community engagement into departmental research and teaching activities.

Participants will hear from Andy Furco and leaders in a variety of academic departments that have already planned, implemented, and evaluated strategic initiatives that advanced the integration of public engagement, and will consider opportunities to deepen engaged learning and scholarship in their own contexts.

In Pursuit of Equity: Pedro Noguera and Discussion

This Thursday, Pedro Noguera will speak at the MEA Conference. A sociologist and UCLA Education professor, Noguera is one of the nation's leading experts on what it takes to foster true equity in our public schools.

Join our PreK-12 colleagues at the MEA conference on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

As a local follow-up, we invite Augsburg faculty from all departments to coffee and conversation regarding the partnership work we are doing or would like to be doing with P-12 schools, and how these efforts strive to close the opportunity gaps in the Twin Cities.

The discussion will be held on Monday, October 19th, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Lindell 301.

The Seasons of a Scholar's Calling: Reflections at Mid-Career by Joan Kunz

On October 19, join the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Christensen Center for Vocation (CCV) for a time of reflection and recognition of the scholarship of Joan Kunz, Associate Professor of Chemistry and the 2015 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching award.

Have You Found the Writing Lab?

Be sure to find the Augsburg Writing Lab! The marvelous writing tutors at the Augsburg Writing Lab work with all Augsburg students on any writing task -- papers, reports, applications, personal statements, resumes, etc. The WL is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken; just come with ideas, drafts (in hard copy), assignments. Each year the tutors conduct about 2,000 sessions with Augsburg grad and undergrad students and have had very busy first weeks this fall!

Here are the hours for fall semester:

Mondays: 11:10 - 1:40 and 6:30 - 9:30 PM
Tuesdays: 12:30 - 3:00; 3:30 - 6:00; and 7:30 - 10 PM
Wednesdays: 3:30 - 6:00 and 6:30 - 9:00 PM
Thursdays: 12:30 - 3:00; 3:30 - 6:00 and 7:30 - 10:00 PM
Fridays: 4:30 - 7:00 PM
Sundays: 5:00 - 8:00 PM

Teach an Honors Elective: Call for Proposals

No, really. We'd love to hear your ideas about teaching electives in the Honors Program.

We're looking for interesting courses that might be offered multiple times, on a regular basis -- no need to worry about one-off course design. A fully developed syllabus is not needed at this point. We just need some really good ideas.

Seminary and Divinity Day

Would you like to learn more about various areas of potential service and explore options for theological graduate study?

If so, gather with your peers from other regional colleges at Gustavus Adolphus College on Monday, October 19.

This all-day event will give you the opportunity to meet with representatives from up to 20 top-notch seminaries and divinity schools from around the nation - from multiple denominational affiliations. The day will also feature a luncheon with a keynote address, breakout sessions and discussions about the discernment process, questions of faith, what it's like to be a professor or in ministry (ordained, not ordained, specialized), the difference between a seminary and divinity school, and more.

Transportation to and from Gustavus will be provided. There is no charge for this event (which includes lunch) but you must pre-register by October 12.

Hagfors Center Focused Conversations: Tue. & Wed.
