Assessment Workshop Today in Kennedy

The Assessment Workshop today will be in 303/305 Kennedy starting at 9 a.m.

The workshop will focus on assessment best practices for majors and graduate programs. The goals for the assessment workshop are to: clarify the goals for major/program assessment for 2014-2015; provide professional development opportunities for conducting effective major/program assessment; provide consultation to departments/programs to support their assessment activities; and provide work time for faculty to complete their 2013-2014 assessment work in a supported environment.

Each department or program should have at least 2 full-time faculty representatives-- having more faculty attend will allow better use of the work time. Faculty members who attend should bring: course syllabi for major/program courses, at least one laptop computer per department/program, and assessment evidence that has been collected in the 2013-14 academic year. Lunch will be served.

Paideia Workshop on Peace

Paideia Seminar: Putting Students in Charge of the Conversation

Have you ever wondered how to engage students in meaningful discussions? If so, this workshop is for you and is being offered through the President's Fund to Advance Peacemaking with the purpose of initiating civil dialogue in campus classes. Through an interactive seminar and coaching activity, you will explore the great idea of peace in a variety of readings along with the pedagogy of Paideia. Participation is limited to 20 faculty. Yes! The Augsburg College Writing Lab is open this summer for summer term students. Hours are Monday and Thursday, 4:30-7 p.m. The Lab is located in Lindell Library, street level, left of the circulation desk. On-Campus GRE Prep Course - Register Now

Augsburg offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students and alumni at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by Augsburg faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course, students complete sample test questions and receive in-depth feedback and instruction.

This is the first of two leadership training sessions that will be held over the next several months. Session one will be a fast-paced, one day program, where you will learn practical tools to help you lead your work groups effectively. The Leadership Training I program covers the fundamentals of supervision, management and leadership, including:

* Understanding the role of a supervisor
* Building a team that works together collaboratively
* Defining goals and helping employees understand their responsibilities
*Delegating appropriately by assigning the right task to the right person to maximize the team's productivity
* Communicating effectively to provide meaningful feedback tor employees to both correct ineffective performance and to recognize their positive contributions

The program includes interactive presentations, supported by visual aids, such as PowerPoint, group discussions, individual and group activities, case studies, and a transfer exercise to help participants transfer learning from the program to their work situations.

Summer Bookstore Charging End Friday, May 23

Students who are registered for the upcoming term will be allowed to charge up to $600 to their student account. The last day to charge books to your student account for all course courses (including summer session 2 courses) will be Friday, May 23.

Students' accounts will be billed for only what was spent on their bookstore account before credit refunds are issued. If your bookstore charges creates a balance on your account you need to make payments in accordance with your statement. Bookstore purchases charged to students' accounts are intended for students who have excess financial aid funds to cover their tuition, fees, AND their books or supplies.

Regent Lisa Novotny '80

"There is no better example of the miracle of God's work than in science," says Lisa Novotny '80, an Augsburg regent, quoting one of her mother's favorite sayings.

Lisa says she and her husband, Mark Flaten, share something special: "Both of our mothers were scientists who were strong, committed Lutheran women. Both women were way ahead of their time, getting college degrees and teaching science at a time when many women were full-time homemakers."

To honor these groundbreaking women, Lisa and Mark are naming a biology faculty office in the Center for Science, Business, and Religion in their memory. "This building fits with what our moms, Zeena Novotny and Edith Flaten, stood for," Lisa says. "The way science and religion will intersect in the CSBR would have really pleased them. I think our moms would smile if they knew their names will be attached to a faculty office."
