McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research, and other scholarly activities. McNair teams scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, and advising in preparation for graduate study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Academic Advising Hours & Appointment Scheduling

For the week of March 24-29, Academic Advising is open Tuesday and Thursday 9-4:30,Friday 9-6:00, and Saturday 9-1:00. We will be closed on Wednesday, March 26 for staff development.

Schedule an appointment with your staff advisor online through Advising Resources. Here are the steps:

1. Log in to your Augnet Account at augnet.augsburg.edu or inside.augsburg.edu
2. Click on "Advising Resources" located under Augnet Services heading
3. Click on "Meet with my staff advisor"
4. Log in again (it's a very secure system!)
5. Click on "Schedule a new appointment"
6. Select your staff advisor and pick date/time. Plan for a 30 minute appointment.
7. The Schedule Appointment send button is at the bottom of the page.

AmeriCorps Tabling - Thursday, March 27

The Minneapolis Health Department is now accepting applications for two AmeriCorps VISTA positions: one to serve with our School Based Clinics (SBC) program, and one to support our youth violence prevention efforts. Both positions run June 2014 to June 2015 and offer the many benefits of AmeriCorps service. Be sure to visit us in the Christensen Center on Thursday, March 27 from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. with any questions.

The SBC VISTA will focus on facilitating a teen advisory board, creating and implementing health education presentations, and supporting SBC staff to improve clinic enrollment, youth engagement, and health equity. The youth violence prevention VISTA will assist with the development and implementation of a hospital-based intervention program for youth victims of violent assault injuries, coordination of training around youth violence prevention for medical professionals and community partners, and building community capacity.

UMW HERC and MnCUPA-HR are cooperating to provide a day full of professional development opportunities for administrators, faculty, staff, and students from HERC and MnCUPA-HR institutions. Keynote speaker, Tawara Goode, Director, National Center for Cultural Competence, Georgetown University, will share the research behind and strategies for fostering and assessing cultural competence in institutions and individuals. Additional sessions will address topics such as:

- Crossing institutional borders to create a multi-culturally competent higher education community

- Fostering cross-cultural self-awareness and communication skills

- Identifying institutional and personal barriers to implementing cross-cultural initiatives

- Incorporating cultural competency goals into performance evaluation

- Integrating cross-cultural awareness into the curriculum

- Leveraging campus tension to enhance cultural competency

- Utilizing diversity training as employee development

- Recognizing the legal implications of targeted diversity hiring practices

Students in human resource development programs are invited to attend the meeting and an 8:00 a.m. breakfast session that will focus on human resource careers in higher education.

This is a reminder that registration begins on April 7. You can view your specific registration day and time in AugNet Records and Registration.

As a WEC student we want to remind you that you have access to register online for WEC, DAY, and AU courses as soon as your registration window opens (you do not need to wait for Crossover Registration to begin). You will be charged the WEC tuition rate for all courses.

Evening courses that meet one night per week on a weekly basis are in the DAY schedule now. All courses listed in WEC and AU are hybrid offerings. Be sure to check all available offerings in WEC, DAY, and AU.

Preference: Current Augsburg pre-service teachers or students pursuing study in science, mathematics, technology, or engineering.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist with student activities and learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- Collaborate with the MPS Lead Teachers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by providing support for small group instruction.
- Facilitate designated group activities.
- Supervise and assist kindergarten-8th grade students in robotics, bridges and other amazing structures, electronics, Tech4Boyz and Tech4Girlz-NASA Summer of Innovation Exploration, musical engineering, art and design, collegiate experience, lunch, and program dismissal.
Skills Required:
- Strong interest or previous experience working with kindergarten - 8th grade students
- Ability to work with diverse student populations
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to multi-task
- Follow through with work responsibilities with limited direction
- Patience

Travelers EDGE Scholarship Due on Wed.

The Travelers EDGE program at Augsburg has provided professional development opportunities and scholarships to several Augsburg upperclassmen over the course of the last 3 years and we are currently accepting applications.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Kemper Foundation, five students will be selected to complete paid summer internships at Travelers Insurance from May 19-June 20, 2014. Three of the five students will also be named Travelers EDGE scholars for the 2014-2015 academic year and will each receive a $10,000 scholarship.

Recipients must meet the following criteria:

- Graduate of a St. Paul or Minneapolis public high school.
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
- During the 2014-2015 academic year, must be enrolled as full time undergraduate with junior status in the Day Program at Augsburg.
- Minimum GPA of 2.5 and in good standing with the College.
- Demonstrate financial need based on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid.)
- Applicants may have any major, but should demonstrate interest in exploring careers in the Insurance and Financial Services Industry (including business, economics, mathematics, computer science, and related fields).

At 3 p.m., Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community will be honored by Augsburg College for their gift to provide endowed student scholarships. Regent Bonnie Wallace will speak on behalf of the college. American Indian graduates from the class of 2014 will be honored.

Spring All Hands Meeting - April 1

The spring 2014 All Hands meeting is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, April 1, in Hoversten Chapel.

The agenda will include brief updates on current topics -- enrollment, fundraising, accreditation, strategic planning, the work of the Governance Task Force, and the progress of the due diligence process on the potential opportunity in Phoenix -- followed by a reflection and conversation led by members of the Governance Task Force. The Task Force will be seeking input on 2-3 tentative ideas around ways to improve governance at the College and will make those ideas available by Friday, March 28, for review in advance of the meeting.

Open House for Donald Gustafson, Tuesday April 8

Please join the Department of History on Tuesday, April 8 as we honor Donald Gustafson. Gus is retiring in May after 53 years at Augsburg College. His only wish -- other than to finish all his grading -- is to see all of you! To that end, we are hosting an open house in the department hallway on the first floor of Memorial Hall. Join us from 2 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. that day as Gus holds court in his green office (Memorial 114B) one last time. We'll provide crackers and cheese, but you and Gus will need to provide the great conversation and reminiscences.
