McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research, and other scholarly activities. McNair teams scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, and advising in preparation for graduate study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Information will focus on the ways email communication is different from the spoken word (and even other written forms) and on Gmail-specific information for managing your Augsburg email.

The Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) would like to personally invite you to come join us at the Powwow this year! This is a great opportunity for you to learn a little about American Indian culture and traditions and it's FREE.

"Grand Entries," which are the start of a dance session are at 1 and 6 p.m. If you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to see a grand entry, however you are invited to come anytime throughout the day. There will be Craft Vendors, information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos for sale and a lot of fun and opportunity to learn. Please join us.

At 3 p.m., Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community will be honored by Augsburg College for their gift to provideendowed student scholarships. Regent Bonnie Wallace will speak on behalf of the college. American Indian graduates from the class of 2014 will be honored.

Jack El-Hai Reading is March 24

MFA Mentor and literary journalist Jack El-Hai will read from his work at 6:30 p.m., March 24 in the Marshall Room, Christensen Center at Augsburg College. Come join us and congratulate Jack on being named a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award. This is a Graduate Information Session and is open to the public.

Books will be available for sale, and Jack will sign books after the reading.

Corky Hall '71 Challenge IHO Ed Saugestad ’59

When Corky Hall '71 came to Augsburg, he encountered Ed Saugestad ’59 and developed a close friendship with him. Saugestad was a stellar hockey coach, compiling a 503-354-21 record. His team won Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles six straight years (1976-82) and won the NAIA national championship in 1978, 1981 and 1982. Saugestad also served on the football coaching staff for Augsburg from 1959-84, including being head coach 1970-71. He taught in the Health and Physical Education department throughout his career, and was men’s athletic director from 1981-87. He retired in 1996.

“Ed was the first person to tell me that I was smart,” Hall recalls. “He said, ‘I know you can succeed academically.’ And he kept after me to produce good grades so that I could stay eligible for sports at Augsburg. I can’t tell you what a tremendous difference that made.”
