Bioethics Summer Research Fellowship - Mayo Clinic

On behalf of the Mayo Clinic, URGO announces the 2014 Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics. This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants. Applications for Augsburg's internal competition are due November 12, 2013.

Program details:
• Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
• 8-10 weeks of full-time research
• $5,000 stipend
• Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
-Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2014
-Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)
-3.50 GPA or higher recommended (if lower, contact urgo@augsburg.edu)
-Must be at least a sophomore standing

2013-14 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship

On behalf of the Augsburg Space Grant Program, STEM program announces the 2013-14 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics and engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.

Application Deadline: October 31, 2013
Submit Applications to stem@augsburg.edu or to SCI 154

Students are encouraged to apply if they are:
-A sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education
-Can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-Show an interest in contributing to NASA's mission

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be:
-A citizen of the United States of America
-Currently, and through spring semester, 2014, be a full-time student in good standing at Augsburg

Michelle Nies Accepts Custodial Manager Position

Director of Facilities Dennis Stuckey is pleased to welcome Michelle Nies into her permanent position as Facilities Custodial Manager. Michelle brings to Augsburg College a wealth of knowledge and experience, primarily from a health care background. She has more than 10 years of experience in her field at various levels of responsibility. Also, Michelle has helped guide other organizations as a long-standing board member of the International Executive Housekeepers Association.

Michelle will lead the internal cleaning teams and will be reviewing all aspects of custodial operation on campus. If you have an immediate need with either a scheduling issue or quality of service, please reach out to her directly. Michelle can best be reached by email at nies@augsburg.edu. Her office is in Suite 17(F), and her office extension number is 1043.

SciTechsperience - Paid Internships in STEM Fields

On Wednesday, October 30, Becky Siekmeier of the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) will give a brief presentation, "Paid Internships in STEM, Hands-on opportunities in Minnesota Business," and answer questions about the SciTechsperience program.

This paid internship program connects talented college students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines to rewarding hands-on opportunities in dynamic Minnesota businesses.

Eligible Students Must Be:
• A Minnesota resident or attending college in Minnesota and at least 18 years of age
• In good academic standing (2.5+ GPA)
• A college junior or senior (60 credits completed)
• Enrolled in an accredited U.S. college and pursuing a qualifying science, technology,
engineering or math degree

There will be three opportunities to learn about SciTechSperience:

Kept in the house and cut off from the outside world, the sisters live in an asphyxiating atmosphere that drives them against each other in an inevitable path to tragedy.

All Saints Day Chapel Service, November 1

We invite you to a special chapel on Friday, November 1, at 10:40 a.m. when the Augsburg Community celebrates All Saints Day. On this festival day we remember with thanksgiving those who have died this past year.

During the worship service, the names of those who have gone before us will be sung during the "Litany of the Saints." The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saint's Day celebrates the people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day, together with congregations throughout the world, we remember the faithful who have died this past year.

You may send the names of those people in your life who have died and who you would like to be named and remembered during chapel to Amy Hanson in the Campus Ministry Office at hansona2@augsburg.edu. Please also include the relationship of the person to you (only the name of the deceased will be sung). Information sheets will also be available during chapel. Please submit names by Thursday, October 31.

Fan Bus Set for Wednesday Volleyball Match

The Augsburg College athletic department is offering a free fan bus for Wednesday night's (10/30) Augsburg volleyball match at Concordia-Moorhead, a match that will decide at least a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

At least 30 fans are needed to sign up for the free fan bus by Tuesday (10/29) at 12 p.m., in order for it to be available. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Augsburg athletic office in Si Melby Hall on Monday and Tuesday. The match begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Moorhead, Minn.

Entering the final round of conference matches, Augsburg is tied with Concordia-Moorhead and St. Thomas for first place in the MIAC volleyball standings, each with 9-1 league records, meaning that the winner of Wednesday's Auggie-Cobber match will win at least a share of the conference regular-season title. Augsburg has already clinched a top-four finish in the league standings and a berth in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs.

We'll be collecting new and gently used clothing at the Welcome Desk in Christensen Center to support the Minnesota Internship Center's free store, which serves homeless and housing vulnerable youth attending four charter high schools in the Twin Cities.
