Athletic Facility Hours for Memorial Weekend
Melby/Kennedy, including both fitness centers, will close at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 24 and will remain closed for the Memorial Weekend. They will re-open with summer hours (see below) at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28. The Ice Arena will not have Augsburg open hockey/open figure skating (Augsburg ID required) on Friday, May 24.
SUMMER MELBY/KENNEDY HOURS:
*Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday: 6 a.m. - 10 p.m.
*Friday: 6 a.m. - 8 p.m.
*Saturday/Sunday: Please refer to monthly calendar.

Creating an Inclusive Campus Conference
Reimagining Augsburg: Learning, Retention, and Success
May 22-23
All faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in the fifth annual conversation to co-create an inclusive campus. The opening session, "Reimagining Augsburg: Learning, Retention, and Success" includes a keynote presentation by Dr. Eric Jolly, President of the Science Museum of Minnesota and member of Augsburg's Board of Regents, entitled "Engagement, Capacity, and Continuity: A Trilogy of Student Success." This will be followed by reimagining working sessions focused on learning, retention, and success.
Other sessions address accessibility and students with mental health and learning disabilities, current measures of how well we are doing in creating an inclusive campus, and classroom strategies for creating inclusiveness. May and Summer WL Schedule
The Writing Lab maintains regular hours during May and summer for all WEC, grad, and summer students. The Lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. Tutors will be available to help students with any writing assignment at these times:
May 6 - June 28: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 5 - 7:30 p.m.
July 8 - August 8: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 5 - 7:30 p.m.

Thoni Award Nominations Sought
The Thoni Award is an annual award honoring a graduating senior student from the adult undergraduate program (in Minneapolis or Rochester) whose actions, commitments, and future aspirations most profoundly demonstrate a commitment to Augsburg's motto of "Education for Service." The award (including a plaque and honorarium) is announced at the June commencement ceremony.
Faculty and staff are asked to nominate students for this award by May 24, 2013. In making a nomination, the nominator(s) should provide their name and the name of the student being nominated, and write a brief nomination entry that includes a response to the following:
1. Describe ways in which s/he has been called to service and how s/he has acted on this call (consider service to the college, faith community, neighborhood/community and/or family);
2. As you consider the nominee's background and future aspirations, please describe how the nominee's education as an adult learner will shape his/her service to others, in one or many roles (community member, parent, employee, citizen, etc.).

State of MN Funds New Teacher Program
We're delighted to announce that the Minnesota State Legislature has approved nearly $400,000 in Collaborative Teacher Education (CUE) funding over the next two years to launch a new teacher preparation program for East African students at Augsburg College. The funding has been approved and the bill has been forwarded to Governor Dayton for his signature. Called the Augsburg EAST program (East African Student to Teachers), this new initiative will provide scholarships, academic programming and service learning opportunities for East African students who are education majors at our Minneapolis and Rochester campuses. Congratulations to Jeanine Gregoire and the Augsburg Education Department!
Faculty & Staff Recognized for Grant Seeking
Congratulations to all Augsburg faculty and staff who were recognized for their grant seeking efforts at the External Grant Workshop and Recognition Event on May 17.
Between April 2011 to March 2013, Augsburg was awarded $7,090,700 in external grant funding. This funding supported or continues to support 39 unique projects, ranging from student programs to faculty-led research. 45 faculty and staff were involved in proposal development, project implementation, and award management. Outlawing Shakespeare: Battle for the Tuscon Mind is a documentary that focuses on the elimination of the Mexican American Studies program within the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) in Arizona. Under a federal de-segregation decree, Mexican American Studies was created and was successful at improving academic achievement for Latino students in Tucson until earlier in 2012 when it was shut down by the TUSD School Board. Directed and produced by Fernando James Orozco.
Refocus the frame: Turing the Lens on Racism is a series of powerful screenings followed by facilitated discussion and thoughtful dialogue presented by the Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative. http://www.overcomingracism.org
Keeping Track of Auggies
Physics Students and Faculty Present Research
Three Augsburg physicists presented the results of their research at the Spring 2013 Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (the "Meeting of the Americas") in Cancun, Mexico May 14-16. Augsburg Physics students Nana Owusu (graduating senior) and Elianna Bier (junior) presented posters comparing ground-based and satellite observations of ultra-low-frequency waves generated in the region where the solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic field, and Physics faculty member Mark Engebretson presented observations of higher frequency waves from a variety of satellite and ground-based sensors, including NASA's recently launched Van Allen Probes.
