Crime Alert: Burglary in Oren Gateway Center
April 25, 2013: Burglary
Public Safety was notified of a burglary in Oren Gateway Center on 4/24/13. The resident believes the burglary happened between Tuesday April 16th and Sunday April 21st. It appears the offender(s) gained entry by an unlocked door and jewelry was taken. If you have any information about this crime, please report to Public Safety Dispatch 612-330-1717 or Minneapolis Police 911.
You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!
Immediately report any suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.
Always lock your individual office door and the suite door whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.
If you misplace or do not have a key, please call x1717 and ask us to come and lock the office. Please wait in the office until we arrive.
Do not prop open doors. If you see a door propped open, close the door and report it to DPS by calling 1717.
Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in locking drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.
Keep your keys on your person at all times.
Back up your data. Your files can easily be backed up to your network folder or a USB drive. Don't risk losing your notes, research and other work. If you have any questions about the best way to back up your data, talk to your LFC or to Student Computing.

As part of a CIC-funded initiative, all faculty are invited to a two-day workshop on Writing Across the Curriculum with Chris Anson, Distinguished Professor of English and Director of Writing at North Carolina State University

Details on Chris's bio and professional work may be found at: http://www.ansonica.net/. He brings extensive experience working with campuses, including several ACTC schools, to assess and improve their embedded writing programs. His visit lays the groundwork for future collaboration with ACTC schools on professional development and assessment around WAC.

Provost Candidate Feedback TODAY
The third and final provost candidate to visit campus is Karen Kaivola, who currently serves as Associate Provost for Faculty Development and J. Ollie Edmunds Professor of English at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. Dr. Kaivola's CV is available on the Provost Search Committee's public community moodle site.

Finals Stress Relief & Therapy Dogs
CCHP and the CLASS office welcome back the Paws for Learning therapy dogs on Monday 4/29/13 from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm. They will be located on the Skyway level of the library near the Gage Center.
Please stop by between finals or before your final for some de-stressing with the therapy dogs.

Open Forums for VP of Enrollment: May 7, 8 and 10
The search committee for the Vice President of Enrollment Management position, in consultation with President Pribbenow, has identified three finalist candidates for on-campus interviews May 7, 8 and 10. Open forums have been scheduled in the Marshall Room for each of the three candidates. The following dates are also posted on the Inside Augsburg calendar (viewable only when logged in):
Candidate 1: Tuesday, May 7, 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.
Candidate 2: Wednesday, May 8, 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.
Candidate 3: Friday, May 10, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
As with the Provost search, candidate resumes will be posted on Moodle the day prior to each candidate's arrival on campus, and an anonymous survey will be available through the following day for feedback.

As the semester is coming near the end, your rentals will soon be due. (May 3)
Please remember if you rented a book, you do not own the book and it can not be sold back for money. Please take all rentals to the front register and check your books in. It is the renter's responsibility to ensure books are checked - in and not sold back. You may refer to your receipt or online order invoice to see if you rented a book. Books that are not checked in by the due date will be charged to the securing credit card. (We would much rather have the book back!)
If you are selling back a book you purchased, please have your Augsburg ID in hand. Buybacks are conducted at the Book Information desk at the bookstore.
New Website for Faculty

This new process was enabled on the bookstore's website on Monday, April 22.
Please note: FacultyEnlight replaces our current textbook ordering system on the bookstore's website.
To submit book orders (adoptions) on FacultyEnlight, you will need to register as a new user.

West Bank Ride on Saturday
Join friends and neighbors at the West Bank Ride this Saturday, April 27th from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. The West Bank Ride is a new non-competitive cycling event inviting participants to explore one of the Twin Cities' most vibrant and bike-friendly neighborhoods. The ride starts from Murphy Square and winds throughout the West Bank neighborhood, making stops at interesting sites and local businesses throughout the area. Today - Retirement Open House for David Draus
The Finance & Administration Division invites you to join us in saying a fond farewell to David Draus, who is retiring after 13 years at Augsburg College. An open house will be held today in the Marshall Room from 2:30-4 p.m. Cake and other refreshments will be served.
David came to us in September 2000 from Envoy Telecom to become the director of purchasing and risk management. Within a year, he had moved to his current position of director of facilities and risk management. Among his many accomplishments was the creation of a long-range deferred maintenance plan, which emerged from a 2005 audit of the facilities' needs, and is worked annually by his team as an approved investment by the Board of Regents.
Upon retirement, David plans to spend more time fly fishing, woodworking, gardening, and with Gayle, his wife of 43 years, as well as his two grandsons. His final day is May 1st.
David leaves big shoes to fill. Dennis Stuckey will become interim director of facilities. Kristin Hansen, assistant to the CFO and CIO, will take over the duties of risk manager.
Funeral Service for Camden Rain Panemalaythong
A funeral service and celebration of the life of Camden Rain Panemalaythong, son of Sisavanh and Fatimah Panemalaythong, will be held in the Hoversten Chapel on Monday, April 29. Fine Arts Keystone Performance Saturday
Please join graduating seniors from the Music, Studio Arts, and Theater departments as they present "Food Is" a visual art and performance piece based on a semester research project that examines student hunger. The event is a benefit to raise funds, awareness and visibility of Augsburg's new food shelf, Campus Cupboard.
"Food Is" includes a collaborative performance piece and a silent auction of student artwork created this semester. It will be held at 7:00 pm this Saturday April 27, 2013 in the basement of Old Main.
Admission is free but donations of nonperishable food items are strongly encouraged.
Light refreshments will be served.

Celia Hernandez Payan Wins Gilman Intl Scholarship
Congratulations to Celia Hernandez Payan, Social Work and Cross Cultural Studies Major, was awarded the prestigious Gilman International Scholarship* to support her summer study of Arabic in Amman, Jordan.
27 Auggies have been awarded over $115,000 through this scholarship program in the last 5 years.

*The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.
International experience is critically important in the educational and career development of American students, but it can also require a substantial financial investment. The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range of public and private institutions from all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico.
Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible study abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare.
This congressionally funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

Fall Job Opportunity for an Augsburg Student
Position Title: Student Organizational Assistant
Position Purpose: To assist, Mike, an incoming Augsburg freshman who has autism, with the daily organization and prioritization of time, schoolwork and other activities
Expected Hours: Average of 1-2 hours/day early in semester—less later in semester
Rate: $10-$12 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
Primary Duties:
• Assist and train Mike in developing written or picture daily schedule/calendar aids
• Assist and train Mike in developing a written (or electronic) planner or other means he can effectively use and maintain in order to track assignments, tests, group meetings, and other schoolwork-related items. Develop a similar means (or the same means) of tracking social events
• Meet with Mike daily (or as often as needed) to ensure Mike has understanding of what he needs to accomplish and when he needs to accomplish it in order for Mike to be a successful student and member of the Augsburg community.
• Mentor Mike and provide him with appropriate and timely advice for success at Augsburg from the perspective of a successful college junior or senior
• Ensure that Mike regularly is reading, understanding and acting on (as necessary) important emails, U.S. Mail and Facebook notices and that he is aware of and effectively adheres to registration, housing and other important deadlines, notices, etc.
• Assist Mike in learning how to safely and efficiently use public transportation periodically to/from campus, home or other necessary destinations.
• Perform above duties in manner that complements activities and processes that Augsburg CLASS office uses with Mike.
• Communicate regularly and effectively with Mike's parents as to progress, challenges and wins!
Job Requirements:
• Enrolled as full-time student at Augsburg College with junior or senior class status as of fall 2013.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to "distill" written and spoken messages to their core components.
• Ability to develop respectful, professional working relationship and rapport with Mike
• Successful applicant will have the ability to be reasonably flexible with their time/schedule on-campus so that they can typically work with Mike when their assistance is needed.
• Knowledge/experience in working with people with autism a plus
• Plus for candidates who reside in the Twin Cities summer 2013 with the ability to begin working with Mike on a limited basis over the summer.
