Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Crime Alert: Burglary in Mortensen

April 17, 2013: Burglary

Public Safety was notified of a burglary of Mortensen Hall on 4/16/13. The Resident believes the burglary happened between 10pm and 11pm. It appears the offender(s) gained entry by an unlock door and money was taken. If you have any information about this crime, please report to Public Safety Dispatch 612-330-1717 or Minneapolis Police 911.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

Immediately report any suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.

Always lock your individual office door and the suite door whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.

If you misplace or do not have a key, please call x1717 and ask us to come and lock the office. Please wait in the office until we arrive.

Do not prop open doors. If you see a door propped open, close the door and report it to DPS by calling 1717.

Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in locking drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.

Keep your keys on your person at all times.

Back up your data. Your files can easily be backed up to your network folder or a USB drive. Don't risk losing your notes, research and other work. If you have any questions about the best way to back up your data, talk to your LFC or to Student Computing.

Severe Weather Safety: Tornadoes

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK
Minnesota participates in Severe Weather Awareness Week during April 15-19th. Please review the information posted each day to be prepared for severe weather this Spring and learn how to keep yourself and our campus community safe.

THURSDAY: Tornadoes

According to the National Weather Service, Minnesota experiences an average of 40 tornadoes per year. In 2012, 37 twisters touched down. A record was set in 2010 with 104 tornadoes across the state. Understanding this threat and knowing what to do when a tornado is approaching can save lives.

Visit http://web.augsburg.edu/dps/EmergencyManual.pdf for a full list of the emergency shelter locations on campus.

What To Do During a Tornado Event

Avoid windows. Get in the basement and under some kind of sturdy protection (heavy table or work bench), or cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag. If you live in an apartment that is on an upper floor, get to the lowest level of the building that you can immediately. This could be an underground parking garage or a neighbor's first floor apartment. Then move to the most interior area possible, away from windows. If you live in a high-rise apartment building, you may not have enough time to get to a lower level, so picking a place in the hallway in the center of your building is the best idea such as a stairwell. If that is not available then a closet, bathroom or interior hall without windows is the safest spot in your apartment during a tornado. Power loss during a tornado storm is common, so avoid elevators and keep a flashlight handy.

In A Car or Truck

Vehicles are extremely dangerous in a tornado. If the tornado is visible, far away, and the traffic is light, you may be able to drive away from its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. Otherwise, park the car as quickly and safely as possible -- out of the traffic lanes. Get out and seek shelter in a sturdy building. If in the open country, run to low ground away from any cars (which may roll over on you). Lie flat and face-down, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Avoid seeking shelter under bridges, which can accelerate the wind while offering little protection against flying debris.

In The Open Outdoors

If possible, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If not, lie flat and face-down on low ground, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Get as far away from trees and cars as you can; they may be blown onto you in a tornado.

Augsburg Alerts: Emergency Notification System:

All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to register for Augsburg Alerts, an emergency notification system operated by Augsburg College. Augsburg Alerts is an electronic communications tool to communicate timely information regarding active emergencies or weather closures via text message, voice mail, and/or email to registered personal cell phones, landlines, or personal email addresses.

Augsburg Alerts only will be used to communicate important information related to weather closings, or during an active emergency, to help individuals make sound decisions about their personal safety. Examples of situations in which Augsburg Alerts may be used could include natural weather events that lead to an unscheduled closing of the College, or for emergency situations such as a gas leak, fire, bomb threat, active shooter, power failure, or other event. Augsburg Alerts will NOT be used to notify the community of things such as enrollment deadlines, sporting events, or other non-emergency information.

City of Lakes AmeriCorps is one of the oldest AmeriCorps programs in the Twin Cities. For 20 years we have never strayed from our central belief that everyone can make a difference in the life of a child. Our members serve in middle schools throughout the Minneapolis Public Schools district providing tutoring and after school enrichment opportunities for English Learners. We take great pride in offering members the opportunity to become positive, caring adult role models for youth in our community. Our ability to impact the literacy needs of our students depends on the one-on-one relationships members build with their students and is at the heart of all that we do.

Our members gain unparalleled hands-on experience working with students, teachers, families, and fellow corps members. They serve as a cohort of emerging leaders who focus on developing their professional and interpersonal skills while exploring the fields of education and youth development within the context of a large urban school system.

Retirement Open House for David Draus

The Finance & Administration Division invites you to join in saying a fond farewell to David Draus, who is retiring after 13 years at Augsburg College. An open house will be held in the Marshall Room from 2:30-4 p.m. on Friday, April 26. Cake and other refreshments will be served.

David came to us in September 2000 from Envoy Telecom to become the director of purchasing and risk management. Among his many accomplishments was the creation of a long-range deferred maintenance plan, which emerged from a 2005 audit of the facilities' needs, and is worked annually by his team as an approved investment by the Board of Regents.

Upon retirement, David plans to spend more time fly fishing, woodworking, gardening, and with Gayle, his wife of 43 years, as well as his two grandsons. His final day is May 1st.

David leaves big shoes to fill. Dennis Stuckey will become interim director of facilities. Kristin Hansen, assistant to the CFO and CIO, will take over the duties of risk manager.
