NEW COURSE for Fall 2013: Vikings
LCS 295 A - "Vikings" is a topics course in Languages and Cross-cultural Studies open to all undergraduates. Bringing together resources and insights from the fields of history, religion, art, literature, law, women's studies, and Old Norse language, we will dig into the realities and question the legacy of the Viking Age. Among other things, we will ask why Minnesotans should support a team called "Vikings"?

TFAPS -- Hybrid Learning Implementation
TFAPS – Hybrid Learning Implementation
All faculty are invited to participate in two workshops offered by CTL and IT to support weekend and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14. If you are satisfied with the basic design of your courses, you only need to participate in the Moodle Labs to learn best practices for online learning and how to meet GAAC/AAC requirements for hybrid learning.
If you would like to improve the underlying design of your courses, you will also benefit from the integrated course design workshop.
Prerequisite: Please watch the screencasts in the Overview section of the Course Design Support Site (http://go.augsburg.edu/moodlelab) before coming to these sessions.

Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning.
The Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning is a hands-on workshop that explores Fink's model for course design, which integrates situational factors, learning goals, learning activities, and assessment. It addresses how to choose face-to-face and online activities to create an engaged learning community, provide direct instruction, and facilitate active, collaborative learning. The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat
The fourth annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 14 to 12:00 pm on Thursday, May 16. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Registrants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis.

Environmental Education Internship, Deadline TODAY
The Dodge Nature Center is a non-profit organization operating a 320 acre nature preserve within the city of West Saint Paul that provides environmental education and outdoor experiences for thousands of people each year, primarily K-8th grade students.
Responsibilities of the Environmental Education Intern include:
• Plan and teach summer day camp programs
• Present environmental education units to various audiences
• Prepare instructional materials for environmental education program units and day camps
• Provide daily care for the reptile and amphibian collection
• Assist with seasonal projects
Qualifications:
• Knowledge and interest in natural history and environmental education
• Enthusiasm for working with children in an outdoor setting
• 2+ years of college coursework in environmental studies, education, sciences, or a related field
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
• Satisfactory result of a background check
The position runs from June 6th to August 15th, 2013. Applicant must be available 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 7:30-4:00.

Remembering Archbishop Oscar Romero

On March 24th, 2013 marked the 33rd anniversary of the tragic death of Archbishop Oscar Romero. In El Salvador (Central America) and millions around the world celebrated his life and legacy
Our Chapel event (Monday at 10:20am) will include a power-point presentation by students that went to El Salvador in January 2013. What they saw and experienced impacted their lives, and especially when they heard the story of Oscar Romero.
Archbishop Romero was ordained a priest in the 1940s. A serious and hardworking pastor, he became a bishop in the 1970s during a time of growing conflict in El Salvador. The church's pastoral work with the poor led some government and military leaders to view it as subversive. Repression suffered by peasants and workers led many in the church to speak out more forcefully against violence and injustice.
Romero's weekly homilies—broadcast by radio —were heard by millions across the country. He spoke in defense of the poor, proclaiming that love is the only answer to injustice and violence. His advocacy led to violent opposition. "I have often been threatened with death," he said, "I must tell you that as a Christian, I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me, I will rise again in the Salvadoran people."
On March 1980, Romero preached to his brothers in the military: "No soldier is obliged to obey an order that is contrary to the will of God. In the name of God, then, and in the name of this suffering people, I ask you, I beg you, I order you: stop the repression!" The next day, while celebrating mass at a small chapel, Romero was killed by a single bullet from an assassin's rifle.
Decades later, the United Nation Truth Commission assigned responsibility for Romero's murder to a political party of El Salvador. Romero's witness to the gospel values of non-violence, justice and love continue to inspire people of faith around the world today.

Keeping Clean Yard Sale
As Spring slowly arrives, we all begin to clean out our closets, dorm spaces, homes and apartments in celebration of warmer weather.
Augsburg Step-Up and members of Project Management Section A, are asking for your help by donating your gently used clothing, accessories, dorm room/apartment furnishings, and electronics. Items will be donated to the First annual Keeping clean Yard Sale, Fundraiser and Informational. Being held on Friday April 5, 2013 In the Oren Gateway Atrium (Date Change) from 11am-8pm
We as Students of Project Management Section A are looking to raise awareness and support of Augsburg's Step-Up program, the country's largest residential college recovery program. Every year Augsburg's Step-Up program serves and assists around 85 students from around the country and has served over 600 individuals during its strong sixteen year history.
All the proceeds made from this yard sale will go to the building of a Scholarship fund that would benefit the countless Students within the Step-Up program who cannot afford the ever rising cost of tuition, housing, and books.
With the help of donations from the Augsburg community and the broader surrounding Twin Cities area, we hope to make a difference and show our support for a pivotal group in our Augsburg community.

If you reserved your gown - it will be ready for purchase/pick up on April 9; if you did not reserve your gown, you may stop in the store from now to the day of graduation to purchase your gown. Please note, that a late fee will be added to the final cost of your cap and gown.

Focused Conversation: Augsburg Promise
The Focused Conversation: Augsburg Promise will be Thursday, April 4, 3:40 pm in Foss 175.
A second Focused Conversation on this topic will be held on Wed., April 10, 12 - 1 pm, Foss 175.
The Augsburg Promise initiative announced last fall is about improving undergraduate student retention. The Augsburg Promise work takes advantage of and is supported by investments in technology with programs such as Retain, AgileGrad and AgileAdvisor. Implementing these software programs will assist faculty and staff in supporting student academic success.
The Focused Conversation is an opportunity to provide an update on work to date and a calendar for implementation of various systems and processes. There will be time for questions and opportunities for input.

Encourage Girls to Run with She Runs
Is your daughter, sister, or friend interested in learning to run? Why not encourage her to join She Runs? Our group is for girls age 9-12. We will meet every Monday and Thursday, April 8-May 23, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Richfield Community Center. We do warm-up activities, play games, and then do a training run together. Our season will conclude with a 5K race on Saturday, June 1.
