YFM205: Youth-led Community Organizing
Do you value the voice of youth? Do you believe they have a lot to offer? Would you like to learn how to empower young people to make positive change in their communities? If so, then this class is for you. In this 0.5 credit course we will study and experience the history, theory, and practice of youth-led community organizing.
This course is listed under the Spring semester Religion courses but is not a course about religious youth work. It is open to all students with an interest in working with youth of any background. It will meet MWF 9:10 a.m. - 10:10 a.m. from January 14- March 1.
Contact Professor Jeremy Myers (myers@augsburg.edu) with any questions.
Dorm Storm for the Marriage Amendment
Six months ago we were down 6 percentage points. Thanks to the hard work of volunteers like you and me, we are now neck and neck. Literally tied. We have a path to victory. But, without your help, we'll lose. We'll be talking with no voters on campuses to make sure all our supporters have a plan to vote on November 6. I'd like to invite you to join our get out the vote team to make history here in MN.
A group of students is going to be dorm storming the campus this Friday to help build our team for Election Day. Please join us in our campus action center located in Sverdrup 207 (The Women's Resource Center) at 7:30 p.m.
This can be challenging work, but I keep reminding myself that I don't want to wake up on November 7 with any regrets.
Email or call me with any questions: Fia@mnunited.org or 612-223-4559
Leadership Reading Circle
There's still time to join!
Julie Clow's The Work Revolution: Freedom and Excellence for All
Leadership Series for all chairs, managers, and supervisors
Facilitator: Paul Terrio
Schedule: Tuesdays 8:30-10:00 a.m.
(November 6, December 4, January 8, February 5, March 5, April 2)
Location: Augsburg Room
Embrace connectivity, increase empowerment, and achieve better work-life blending.
We live in a new age of global organizations, hyper-access to information, and accessibility to tools that enable us to bring any idea life. Strangely, our workplaces are lagging behind the promise of this open and collaborative world. Most organizations are rule-based, top-down, dreary environments optimized for conformity and little else. The Work Revolution creates a compelling portrait of a different kind of work.
"I believe freedom in the workplace is worth fighting for and every person and every organization can be excellent."
Julie Clow articulates the rules we follow today in our work force, the reasons they no longer work, and what we can do instead. The Work Revolution deconstructs the magic behind thriving, liberated organizations (such as Google, which is repeatedly named as the Best Workplace) into clear principles that any individual, leader, and organization can adopt to create sustainable and engaging lives.
Provides actionable changes anyone can make, regardless of where they work, to create a more sustainable work-life blend
Details concrete ways to influence existing organizations to change
Guides leaders to make tangible changes in their teams to enable greater autonomy and impact
Outlines organizational culture principles that support and nurture high-performance and healthy environments, providing clear options for instituting cultural change based on specific organizational challenges
Rejecting productivity Band-Aids and quick fixes, The Work Revolution conceptualizes a completely new workplace that embraces the always-connected reality to create organizations in which high achievers can sustainably thrive.
If you'd like to attend, please register with Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu) and pick up a book.
General Announcements
Thank You Blood Donors
Memorial Blood Center wants to thank those Auggies who helped saves lives at the annual fall blood drive on Tuesday. The 31 whole blood units and 6 double red cell units collected can be used to save up to 99 lives! Great job Augsburg! In addition, there were 19 first time donors, which is also awesome.
If you didn't have the chance or were not feeling well enough to donate this time, save the date for Wednesday, March 30, 2013 when we will host the annual spring blood drive.
Questions? Please call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707.

Turkeypalooza and Give to the Max
Every year, each Campus Kitchen program in the country celebrates Thanksgiving with an event called Turkeypalooza. For the week before Thanksgiving, we like to serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal to our neighbors at the sites where we serve food at each week (Ebenezer, Peace House, Brian Coyle, and Common Bond).
Rather than using the fine surplus food that A'viands generously provides us all year, we count on the Augsburg Community to donate the turkey, potatoes, green beans, and money we need to cook all of this extra food.
This year, we have another reason to celebrate, as Finnegans Beer and Community Fund chose us as one of their Three Small Pints: innovative programs that are focused on food and community. On Give to the Max Day, November 15, Finnegans will match all the money raised online up to $1,500. This is a great day to make a monetary donation for Turkeypalooza as it will be doubled. See the campaign at http://givemn.razoo.com/users/pcs2fg
We are looking for people and teams of people (like specific offices or departments) to donate ingredients and/or cash. Please let our intern us know if you would like to represent your office and commit to gather a certain food item. Or, if a cash donation works better, as a representative you can collect money and donate it online on November 15 so that it is doubled by Finnegans. Email if we can count on you and your office.
We will be collecting the frozen turkeys, bags a potatoes, cash, and anything else at a table in the Christensen Center on Thursday 11/15 and Friday 11/16 from 11 to 1 p.m. If you can't deliver your gifts then, let us know and we'll make special arrangements.
Schedule of volunteer shifts and meals:
Thanksgiving Cooking Class - Tuesday 11/13 7-9 p.m.
Thanksgiving Cooking Class - Wednesday 11/14 7-9 p.m.

Conference Funding for Student Presenters
Each year, URGO provides travel grants of up to $750 for students who are presenting research at professional conferences. Conferences allow students to hear from top researchers, build connections with graduate programs and mentors, and practice public speaking skills. Travel funds may be used for conference costs such as registration, airfare, milage, lodging, and food. Because of limited funds, URGO is only able to fund those who are presenting research. We encourage those who are interested in attending a conference but are not yet ready to present to look into local conferences, which are often more affordable.
Students must apply for funding through the URGO office at least three weeks prior to the conference. Because grants are given out on a rolling basis, it is in your best interest to apply as soon as possible. Travel grant applications can be found at our website: http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/travel-funding/
If you have any questions, please contact Kirsten O'Brien at obrienk@augsburg.edu.

Thanks for the Help with Augsburg.edu
Thank you to everyone who has helped review the new Augsburg.edu site this week. We've gotten very positive feedback about the site since it launched last Friday and very helpful submissions to the website error reporting form so we can understand and address where people are encountering issues.
In the coming weeks, we invite you to continue to use the online form to report issues (e.g., broken links or images): http://inside.augsburg.edu/marketing/forms/weberror/ .
If you would like to contact the content manager for a specific section with the website, please see the list posted on Inside Augsburg last week: http://augnet.augsburg.edu/news-archives/2012/10_22_12/WordPress_launch.html.

Dan Phillips Speaks at HFA Convocation, Nov. 7
The speaker for this year's Humanities and Fine Arts Convocation is Dan Phillips a designer and builder, and the founder of The Phoenix Commotion. Phillips builds houses for low-income families out of 90% re-used or recycled materials. His designs are artsy and whimsical, for example using license plates instead of shingles for roofing tiles. His philosophy of building is grounded in the liberal arts, and as a speaker he is witty and engaging.
During his two days at Augsburg, Phillips will talk to art students about design, to MBA students about social entrepreneurship, and to environmental studies students about sustainable building practices. His main convocation talk, "Recycled Housing: Adventures in Human Sensibilities" will take place on November 7, at 10 a.m., in Hoversten Chapel.
To have lunch with Phillips after the convocation, email adamo@augsburg.edu.
Let's Talk About Debt
Let's talk about DEBT.
Student-Led Town Hall Meetings
Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, Foss Center
November 1, 2, 3 at 7 p.m.
November 4 at 3 p.m.
The average Auggie graduates with $24,000 worth of debt in federal loans alone.
What is DEBT? Debt isn't a conventional theater productionit's not a production at all, in fact. A student ensemble will lead a series of four town hall meetings exploring the topic of student debt using participatory, popular theater techniques and facilitation methods to generate dialogue among audience and cast members. Think of it as an interactive four-day forum.
Nov. 1, 7 p.m.: The State of Debt
Nov. 2, 7 p.m.: Faces of Debt
Nov. 3, 7 p.m.: You Have a Voice
Nov. 4, 3 p.m.: It Doesn't End Here
Before and after the town halls, staff and students will have information tables in the lobby outside Tjornhom-Nelson Theatre. A group of students from the cast will provide information for other students interested joining a student-led action team. Staff from Academic Affairs and Student Financial Services will also be on hand to answer questions about debt and student financial issues.
Admission is free for the Debt town halls. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items that will be used for a food shelf that the Fighting Poverty at Augsburg group plans to open on campus in the spring semester.

The main convocation talk, "Recycled Housing: Adventures in Human Sensibilities" will take place on November 7, at 10 a.m., in Hoversten Chapel. Lunch will follow at 11:30 a.m. in Lindell Library, room 301. There is only space for 30 guests, so RSVP is required.

Old AT&T Phone for Student?
A student that I work closely with lost her cell phone, and it would help if she could find a donated one. Do you have an older AT&T phone that you could donate to her? It doesn't have to be fancy. Thanks!
