The following items are going to be put up for sale in the Recycle Bin. Please check them out on the Facilities Recycle Bin Moodle site, or they can be viewed by stopping by the Facilities Office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday-Friday. Bids will be accepted until 10/31/12.

Item #2012-4: Kenmore Refrigerator w/ Top Freezer – Approx. 16 Cubic Ft.; 29 3/4"W X 27 ½"D X 65"H; Thermostat reported to be bad.

Item #2012- 5: RCA Side-By-Side Refrigerator – Approx. 20 Cubic Ft.; 33 ½"W X 29"D X 67"H; water and ice dispenser, but unknown if they work; frig and freezer section work okay.

Article About Nicaragua Mathematics Trip

Mathematics professors John Zobitz and Tracy Bibelnieks, along with Mark Lester from the CGE have an article in this month's MAA Focus journal. New Course: SWK 240: Intergroup Dialogue

Looking for a new course that will sharpen communication skills needed in an increasingly diverse Minnesota? Are you a junior or a senior looking for something totally different and have a "spare" elective credit? Consider SWK 240: Intergroup Dialogue.

In SWK 240, you will participate in intergroup dialogue; an experiential process that enhances complex thinking skills as well as cross-cultural competence and empathy. The class will explore the intersection between your individual experiences and narratives from historical, psychological and sociological sources. If you've ever felt awkward when talking to someone from a different cultural background SWK 240 can help.

This session is offered in two parts, and will make use of the StrengthsFinder assessment available with the book Strengths Based Leadership. You may attend both parts, or only the one that is most applicable to you - your choice!

Part 1 is intended for first time completers of the StrengthsFinder assessment, and for those who have previously completed the assessment and would like a refresher. Engage with your assessment results and explore ways to apply your strengths at work.

Part 2 is intended for those who have previously attended a Using your Strengths at Work session. Explore the StrengthsFinder concepts in more depth and discuss further application.

CTL has a limited number of copies of Strengths Based Leadership (which includes the StrengthsFinder assessment) available for attendees who have not previously completed the assessment. Gift cards for Kindle editions are also available.

About the Facilitator:
Velma Lashbrook is the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies. She believes that understanding your strengths is essential for understanding how you can best contribute and exercise leadership. She uses strengths based approaches in several of her graduate classes and has led strengths-based workshops for Augsburg, business, and professional audiences.

Conference Funding for Student Presenters

Each year, URGO provides travel grants of up to $750 for students who are presenting research at professional conferences. Conferences allow students to hear from top researchers, build connections with graduate programs and mentors, and practice public speaking skills. Travel funds may be used for conference costs such as registration, airfare, milage, lodging, and food. Because of limited funds, URGO is only able to fund those who are presenting research. We encourage those who are interested in attending a conference but are not yet ready to present to look into local conferences, which are often more affordable.

Students must apply for funding through the URGO office at least three weeks prior to the conference. Because grants are given out on a rolling basis, it is in your best interest to apply as soon as possible. Nabo is offering a new meal replacement special, one meal plan meal per week can be used to purchase the special of the day at Nabo from 1:30 p.m. to close. Hot apple cider is now available at Nabo!

Halloween Safe Block

Halloween Safe Block is sponsored by Community LINK and Res Life and is only a few days away on Wednesday, October 31, from 4-6 p.m. in the Urness tower and Urness/Mortensen lobby.

Safe Block is designed to create a safe, fun-filled event for both kids from the community and the students! Freshman students we encourage you to participate to pass out candy at your dorm (all candy is provided). All other students are welcome to volunteer to be a tour guide, help with activities and also if your a member of another student organization you can decorate a floor and host an activity to promote your student org! The top few freshman that have best costumes and dress up will receive prizes!

Telling Our Stories at the "Common Table" TODAY

The American Commonwealth Partnership and Center for Democracy and Citizenship is hosting a "Telling our Story" event highlighting our work as "Citizen Educators." We are doing exciting work here, but often don't know what others on campus are up to, and need to educate ourselves about what that work is. This workshop with be a chance to find more opportunities for strengthening and showcasing the kind of collaborative, interdisciplinary, applied projects that we think are at the core of a "Democracy College" and is part of the ongoing work of the Commission on Academic Opportunities.

The open discussion will be held today, Oct. 29, from 3-5 in the "Common Table" (formerly St. Martin's Table space, downstairs in the Trinity Lutheran Building on Riverside Ave. and 20th Ave.)

We will start with short presentations from a few of the stakeholders (Admissions, Institutional Advancement, Marketing & Communication, Faculty, and Community), and then move into small group discussion with a mix of staff, students, community members, and faculty in each group, brainstorming and "prototyping" stories that would appeal to and excite current and prospective students and donors. The goal is to leave with both new stories to share with our neighbors and new ways to collaborate in our ongoing work on campus.

Blood Drive Tomorrow - Donors Needed

Memorial Blood Center will be on campus on Tuesday 10/30/12 from 10-4 p.m. in East Commons (upper level in Christensen Center). There are still donation times available so please consider signing up to donate blood! Online scheduling is available by going to www.mbc.org/searchdrives and enter sponsor code 0027. You will be able to see what time slots are still available and sign up right there.

If you prefer, you can call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707 and we can get you scheduled that way as well. Auggies have always been generous donors at our annual blood drives, and we expect nothing less this time. All presenting donors will receive a complimentary tote bag and double red cell donors will additional receive a T-shirt!

Please sign up for your preferred donation time as soon as possible. If you are not able to donate but still would like to help out, we could always use volunteers in the canteen/snack area, too. Please call the CCHP office about signing up for a one hour time slot for that as well.
