U of M Pre-Med Seminar for Multicultural Students

The University of Minnesota Medical School Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity invites applicants for the 2012 Fall Semester Empowering Multicultural Students for Careers in Medicine Seminar. This eight-week seminar for underrepresented minority premedical undergraduate students will start September 25, 2012 and end November 13, 2012. Students will meet every Tuesday from 5:30-7 p.m.

Augsburg students have participated in the past and found the program helpful. There is a $40 fee for students who are accepted to the program.

Goals of the program:
• To promote success for multicultural students applying to Medical School.

• To demystify the medical school application process and enhance the participant's confidence in their ability to be successful medical school applicants.

• To increase the diversity of the University of Minnesota Medical School student body.

Model UN Team Applications Now Being Accepted

Augsburg College's Model United Nations Team is now accepting applications for the 2013 National Model UN Conference, to be held in New York City this coming March 17-21. The program and club are open to any student at Augsburg who is interested in world politics, diplomacy, or the work of international organizations; however, space on the delegation is limited and students most demonstrate knowledge and strong interest in international relations and the work of the UN.

Those selected for the delegation must enroll in the Model UN course (POL 368) in the Spring term, and pay a $400 lab fee, which covers the cost of the conference, travel, and hotel in New York. More information about the conference can be found at http://www.nmun.org/nmun_ny.html

Free Yoga Starts Tuesday

Looking for some ongoing regular stress relief combined with exercise? Something that's free and right on campus? Then look no more. The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion and Human Resources are sponsoring yoga again this year. The classes will be Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Wrestling Room in Kennedy Center (top of the stairs on the football field side of Kennedy). The first class for the fall semester will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, and then every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the semester.

Feel free to come as often as you are able to make the class. Wear comfortable clothing and bring your own yoga mat if you would like. A limited number of free yoga mats and blocks are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bucket List

Meeting & Audition for Fall Theater Production

An Augsburg Theater Department Project

Have you ever struggled to buy books or pay for food?

Introductory Meeting/Audition

WHAT IS DEBT?
Debt isn't a conventional theater production--it's not a production at all, in fact. The students who are chosen to be part of this project will lead a series of four town hall meetings about student debt using participatory, popular theatre techniques. Think of it as an interactive four-day forum.

Leading up to this forum, there will also be a week of short performances, projects, and events throughout the Augsburg campus designed to generate conversation about student debt and encourage students, staff, and faculty to attend the town hall meetings.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
No prior experience in performance is necessary--just interest in the issue of student debt, commitment to learning more, and desire to take part in and co-lead an interactive discussion.

The only thing you need to do to prepare is pick up and read one article about student debt in advance of auditions. You can find hard copies of this article in the Theater Department main office of the Foss Center or on reserve at the library circulation desk. You may also request a PDF copy by emailing stage manager Teondra Easterling at easterli@augsburg.edu.

The auditions will be collaborative in nature. We will talk about the project itself, as well as the article. Then, we will try out a few performance activities together. Students will be invited to return for on Thursday, September 13, for follow-up small group meetings to discuss their involvement in the project.

Open Hearings on Course/Credit Hours

As you probably know, the federal government has issued a mandate that all colleges and universities must be in compliance with guidelines regarding course credit hours. The Higher Learning Commission has established protocols to ensure compliance and a group of Augsburg staff and faculty members has been meeting this past summer to work on means by which this compliance can be accomplished.

At the first faculty Senate meeting yesterday, senators discussed the work of this Task Force on Academic Program Structure (TFAPS). It is important that all faculty and staff members also have opportunities to learn about the proposed changes and to discuss options. Therefore, we have scheduled three open hearings on the credit hour issue before the first faculty meeting. Please plan to attend one (or more) of these sessions:

Students for Obama meeting

In 2008, Barack Obama won young voters by a 2:1 margin, and he needs the same level of support in 2012. Students for Obama is a critical part of the campaign's efforts to connect young voters and turn them out on Election Day. Every day that goes by is an opportunity to engage new voters, and recruit volunteers. SFO meets Mondays at 9 p.m. in the Fish Bowl. Learn how to get involved with the campaign. Class credit is available for some students.

The stakes are too high and the alternative is too extreme. We need you all to own your campus. If young people turn out to vote, the President will win Minnesota. You will decide this election.
