Augsburg is hosting the fourth traditional Powwow on Saturday, March 31. Due to the large number of people expected in Kennedy Center and Si Melby Hall for this event, both fitness centers and all locker rooms will be closed for the entire day.

Spring AIS/ENL 355 Class

AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature

This spring trimester, American Indian Studies is offering AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature for WEC. This class meets Sundays 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.

The course is structured around a number of writers working within a particular theme such as Native Voices of Minnesota, Voices from the Southwest, Poetics and Politics of Native Writing, Women and Power in Native Literature, Urban-Reservation: Homing, and American Indian film-literature adaptation. Students focus on primary texts, comparing and contrasting theme, voice, aesthetic, or cultural emphasis as it shifts or arises across the group of texts. Course cross-lists with English.

(Prereq.: ENL 220 or 221, or a 200-level literature course, or consent of instructor.)

Conference Proposals Due April 1

Creating an Inclusive Campus – Call for Proposals

This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:


Engaging all students – These sessions explore student differences and what we can do to ensure that all students feel included and receive the support they need to be successful.

Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum – These sessions examine what departments are doing to address diversity and global learning in their courses and programs.

Developing our community – This track focuses on faculty, staff, and administrator skills and practices, and what we can do to ensure inclusiveness across the campus.

The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

We invite you to submit a proposal for a 90-minute session related to any of the 3 tracks. Please provide a title and list of presenters, along with a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu) by April 1.

Now Hiring: IT Student Technical Assistant

The IT department is searching for a few more student employees to do technical work this summer. This position (previously the "IT intern" position) works closely with the LFCs to support Faculty & Staff computing including troubleshooting technical issues, repairing computers, and installing software. In addition, the IT Technical Assistants prepare most of the new computers that arrive throughout the summer. While this position only runs through the summer, opportunities exist to continue in this position throughout the 2012-13 school year.

We're looking for self-motivated, responsible students with a high-level of computing experience for this summer position. Annual Augsburg Powwow - March 31

The Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) and American Indian Student Services program would like to personally invite you to come join us at the Powwow this year! The date is Saturday, March 31, 2012 in the Si Melby Gymnasium (715 23rd Avenue S, Minneapolis). FREE ADMISSION TO ALL AND EVERYONE WELCOME!! Watch you campus box for a postcard invitation as well.

This is a great opportunity for you to learn a little about American Indian culture and traditions . .bring your family and friends to this family-friendly cultural event. "Grand Entries", which are the start of a dance session are at 1 PM and 6 PM and if you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to come at one of these times to watch a grand entry, however, you are invited and welcome to come and go anytime throughout the day. . .you are welcome to 'check it out' for a short period of time or spend the entire afternoon and evening with us! You can also listen to the MC where he will inform the spectators of opportunity/appropriate times when you can dance with us. We will start the day at 1 PM and end at 9 PM. . . we hope you can come!! We will be 'Honoring' the 15 American Indian Graduates at 3:00 PM and have Aztec Dancers, Hand Drum Exhibition and Hoop Dancer starting at 4 PM during the dinner break.

There will also be Craft Vendors, Information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos and frybread for sale. It is expected to be a great time and great opportunity to learn.

Sex Trafficking Documentary TODAY at 4 p.m.,

The documentary "Bought, Sold, and Discarded: The Fatal Promises of Human Trafficking" will be shown in Science 123 at 4 p.m.

Already shown at the United Nations Association Film Festival and the BITHAR Film Forum in Boston, MA, the film offers critical analysis of the industry and efforts to combat it with the aim of understanding the phenomenon on all levels, from theory to practical solutions and the law.

LGBTQIA Ally Training I Offered in May

Ally Training I is offered to all faculty, staff, and students at Augsburg College to gain knowledge, skills, and resources around being intentionally supportive of LGBTQIA communities. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA history and culture, confront myths and stereotypes, discuss heterosexual and gender-conforming privilege, discuss potential scenarios, ask questions in a safe environment, and discuss next steps on how to be an effective ally to LGBTQIA individuals at Augsburg.

CGE Mexico Director Delivers Plenary Address

Dr. Ann Lutterman-Aguilar, Mexico Site Director & Instructor for the Center for Global Education, presented a plenary address entitled "Vocation and Experiential Learning" at the NetVue Regional Conference at California Lutheran University March 9-10. NetVUE is The Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education, a network of colleges and universities in the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) committed to fostering the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation in their campus communities.

Biology Student Wins Student Poster Competition

Congratulations to Biology major Alex Sorum for winning the Student Poster Competition, Medicine and Public Health category at the 2012 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) international meeting in Vancouver B.C. Alex won with his poster titled "Effects of Airway Epithelial Secretions on Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilm Formation" which presented the research he did as a Sundquist Scholar in Dr. Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright's laboratory during 2011. The AAAS 2012 poster competition was open to students actively working toward an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral degree and, as a winner, Alex will receive a cash award, a framed certificate, and a one-year subscription to Science. Additionally, he will be recognized in an upcoming issue of Science as well as on the AAAS website. Alex's trip to present at AAAS 2012 was funded by Augsburg's URGO office.

Schield Elected to International Statistical Inst.

Milo Schield, Professor of Business Administration, was approved for Elected Membership in the International Statistical Institute at the annual meeting of the ISI held in Dublin Ireland in 2011. Milo was also elected as the chair of the local Twin-Cities chapter of the American Statistical Association and was named the head of the Media Committee for the International Statistical Literacy Project.

Nordic Somali Students Learn of Public Achievement

More than 150 Nordic Somali people learned about Public Achievement in a workshop led and organized by two Auggies.

The Center for Democracy and Citizenship's Dennis Donovan led a workshop on Public Achievement and Community Organizing at the Nordic Somali Youth Summit in Oslo, Norway, on March 20th. Participants learned about the Public Achievement initiative and principles of community organizing such as self-interest, one to one relational meetings, values house meetings, and power mapping.

The Summit brought together more than 150 Somali youths ages 15-30 from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland to highlight the positive Somali contributions to the Nordic countries and to promote youth civic engagement and development.

Recent Augsburg graduate Katie Edelen was project manager of the Summit.

Wanted: Roommate for a 3br Townhouse in Seward

We need 1 great person to live with us in our 3-level townhome in Seward (right off Franklin and 21st Ave). The lease starts JUNE 1st and is year-long.

The house is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home with a living room, dining room, kitchen, mini-kitchen, and free laundry. We have air conditioning, and it's a LARGE SPACE. The house is AWESOME and it's really cheap. It's about a 7 minute walk from Augsburg, right next to the light rail, and Tracy's is pretty much in the backyard!

Our requirements: you must be queer-friendly, somewhat neat but definitely respectful of common spaces, and be able to pay rent.
