The Odds Heard 'Round the World

A trending topic in news and social media this week has been the NCAA March Madness tournaments. Augsburg has been part of that trend thanks to Auggie Mike Weimerskirch.

Weimerskirch, an assistant professor of math, talked with media about the odds for picking the perfect bracket. A version of the story, picked up by the Associated Press, ran in publications ranging from the Huffington Post to the Washington Post, and from Yahoo.com online to, well, you name it!

Weimerskirch's quote about the odds of picking the perfect bracket, and the name of the College, appeared in more than 400 media outlets and reached more than 238 million people.

So, what are the odds for picking the perfect bracket? Here's one of the 400+ stories with Weimerskirch's answer: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/odds-for-picking-a-perfect-march-madness-bracket-it-just-doesnt-add-up/2012/03/13/gIQAULQ48R_story.html

Congrats to Weimerskirch on becoming part of such a fun story and a timely topic. Augsburg is lucky to have been part of the story.

Teamwork Builds Connection to National Media

Thanks to staff in the McNair Scholars Program for collaborating with Marketing and Communications to identify and connect with an Augsburg alum for a national news story.

U.S. News and World Report's Katy Hopkins posted several weeks ago to Twitter, a social media microblog, that she wanted to speak with graduate students who negotiated financial aid for their graduate studies.

By partnering with McNair staff, Marketing and Communications staff was able to connect the reporter to an Auggie alum. Bob Goodman '10 shared with Hopkins his story of garnering support for his sociology studies at New Mexico State University.

To read the story that includes Goodman, visit http://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/top-graduate-schools/paying/articles/2012/03/13/5-steps-to-getting-more-money-from-your-graduate-school

This story provided a strong manner in which to build awareness and knowledge of the College, outcomes of our students, continue building Augsburg's connection with a national publication, and to reconnect with an Auggie.

This is the second time Augsburg connected with U.S. News and World Report through a post to Twitter. The first time was when international Auggie Masha Shatanova spoke with Hopkins about supports for international students. Augsburg was the only private college, and the only Minnesota school, in that story. You can read it at http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2011/12/08/8-campus-resources-for-international-students

Thanks, again, to the McNair staff for their quick help this go-around in identifying and connecting with an Auggie open to telling his story.

$1 = $4 = $8= Annual FoodLess FoodDrive

Sabo Center for Citizenship and Learning is now organizing the 4th annual FoodLess FoodDrive, and our goal is to raise enough funds to provide three months worth of food purchased by Brian Coyle Food shelf to Cedar-Riverside residents. Each month they spend over $1,000 on bulk food purchasing for distribution, so Augsburg is setting a $3,000 goal to fill their shelves until the summer.

Using commodity programs and bulk buying power, money in the food shelf's hand is worth four times as much as ours in a grocery store. This makes your $1 equate to $4 of food in the hands of the food shelf. Money also allows the food shelf to purchase exactly what the community needs when it needs it.

The Cedar-Riverside community relies on us, so we ask you to join us in our effort to help them. More information about the FoodLess FoodDrive and how you can make a monetary contribution has been delivered by mail to all Faculty and Staff members this week. For students that wish to donate; look for our events later this month!

We invite you to join Medieval Studies major Andrew Fox for his senior "chapel talk", this Friday, March 16, at 10:20am, in Hoversten Chapel. This will be a memorable service, in which Andrew and a few of his friends attempt to reenact the medieval monastic practice of chanting the hours in Latin. The music will be beautiful.
