The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat

The third annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 29 to 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 31. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Those interested in participating should contact Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu). Registrants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis.

CTL Grant Application Due Dates

Faculty Summer Scholarship Grant Applications due March 15
Two Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants ($4000) and two Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants ($2000) are available to support faculty summer scholarship activities. Applications should be submitted electronically no later than March 15. For more information and to receive an application form, contact Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu.)

Instructional & Course Design Grant Proposals due March 15
Up to eight Instructional and Course Design Grants ($3000 each) are available to support faculty summer course design activities, using L. Dee Fink's Creating Significant Learning Experiences and D. Randy Garrison & Norman D. Vaughan's Blended Learning in Higher Education. The purpose of these grants is to support the development of instructional design skills, as well as their application to a specific course. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire serve as consultants for grant recipients. Applications are due no later than March 15. The Augsburg College Writing Lab is located in Lindell Library (street level, left of the circulation desk). Last term, tutors in the lab conducted almost 1300 sessions working with students on their writing assignments and they can help you, too. No appointments are taken; just stop by. Creating an Inclusive Campus – Call for Proposals

This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:

Engaging all students – These sessions explore student differences and what we can do to ensure that all students feel included and receive the support they need to be successful.
Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum – These sessions examine what departments are doing to address diversity and global learning in their courses and programs.
Developing our community – This track focuses on faculty, staff, and administrator skills and practices, and what we can do to ensure inclusiveness across the campus.

The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

We invite you to submit a proposal for a 90-minute session related to any of the 3 tracks. Please provide a title and list of presenters, along with a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu) by April 1.

Project Prom! Dress Donations Needed

Project Prom is a partnership between the Saint Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation alongside the Highland Business Association, and The Landmark Center. The goal of Project Prom is to provide students in the Saint Paul community a formal dress for their high school prom. We are looking for new or lightly used formals.

Drop off times are February 29 & March 7th at the Landmark Center Loading Dock, 75 W. 5th Street, St. Paul from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. or

Exploring Culture: Zorongo Flamenco

Explore culture and language outside of Augsburg this weekend with Zorongo Flamenco's performances of "Zorro... in the land of the Golden-Breasted Woodpecker". Creatively based on choreographer Susana di Palma's family memoir, the fabled Zorro comes alive in the form of a Native American trickster on a quest to return two captive sisters from missionary boarding schools to their Ojibwe mother. Join this magical flamenco journey as Zorongo explores how conflicting intercultural concepts of salvation, healing and colonialism impinge upon a Native American family. The story is portrayed by a powerful cast of Native American, Spanish and local artists, all led by Antonio Granjero as Zorro.

13th Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 13th annual Augsburg Leadership Awards! Students, staff, faculty, alums, and community members are strongly encouraged to nominate their fellow student leaders, student groups, and student group advisers for a variety of awards. People may also nominate themselves or a student group in which they are involved. Winners will be honored at the Augsburg Leadership Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 10th at 4:30 PM.

Scholastic Connections Application Deadline 3/1

ATTENTION UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF COLOR:
Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color who serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Six "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2012-13.

Eligibility criteria:
• Current Augsburg student or advanced standing transfer student
• Demonstrated financial need
• Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
• Demonstrated community involvement (on or off campus)
• GPA of 2.5 or higher

Application Process:
• Applicants must complete the following:
• Scholastic Connections Application (due 3/1)
• One letter of recommendation from someone other than a family member (due 3/1)
• A completed financial aid file – a completed FAFSA (due 3/1 in the Enrollment Center)
• An application interview with Cindy Peterson (completion deadline 3/15) – instructions to follow receipt of application

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. Please go to http://web.augsburg.edu/cao to find the locker request form and return it to the Auggie's Nest located on the basement level of Christensen Center.

Spanish Conversation TODAY

Are you looking for a place to practice your Spanish? We've got just the thing for you - Spanish conversation group! All language levels are welcome to join us for laughs and interesting conversation as we practice speaking in a relaxed and friendly setting. Photo Exhibit Features Ethiopian Women

Enjoy the photography of Oromo women from Ethiopia, presented by Tsehai Wodajo, Augsburg graduate and founder of Resources of the Enrichment of African Lives (REAL). The event is co-sponsored by the Women's Resource Center.

"I'm eager for more people to learn about the challenges faced by Ethiopian women, and to be inspired by how these women pass along hope and perseverance to the next generation," said Ms. Wodajo.

Wodajo, who also is a senior social worker for Hennepin County, will share her personal story, and speak about her work. Her story also is intended to help promote education of girls in Ethiopia. She will be joined by other presenters who will talk about the history and culture of the Oromo people with a focus on the role of women in shaping their culture. Other presenters include Peri Klemm, associate professor of art history from California State University at Northridge, and Martha Kuwee Kumsa, associate professor of social work from Wilfred Laurier University.

The exhibit is open from 1-4 PM, February 25-26th in Foss Center; the cultural presentations will occur from 2-3 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium on both days.
