The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat

The third annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 29 to 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 31. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Those interested in participating should contact Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu). Registrants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis.

Blended Learning Series

Blended learning has come to mean everything from web-enhanced face-to-face learning to, but not including, courses that are fully online. Integrating online technologies can enhance and enrich learning; online tools also help differentiate instruction. A recent meta-analysis reported by the U.S. Department of Education found that blended learning produced higher performance on learning outcomes than either online or face-to-face learning.

The Blended Learning Series, co-sponsored by IT, is offered from 8:30-10:00 on Third Wednesdays in Lindell 202, and includes the following remaining spring workshops:

March 14 – Online Assessment Techniques and Academic Integrity (Scott Krajewski and Emily Hoisington)

CTL sponsors a series focused on well-being. It includes a broad look at well-being based on Rath & Harter's book Well-Being: The Five Essential Elements. This monthly series is held 12:00-1:30 pm on the second or third Friday in the Augsburg Room, and includes a copy of the book and a diagnostic. It consists of the following remaining sessions:

CTL Grant Application Due Dates

Faculty Summer Scholarship Grant Applications due March 15
Two Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants ($4000) and two Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants ($2000) are available to support faculty summer scholarship activities. Applications should be submitted electronically no later than March 15. For more information and to receive an application form, contact Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu.)

Instructional & Course Design Grant Proposals due March 15
Up to eight Instructional and Course Design Grants ($3000 each) are available to support faculty summer course design activities, using L. Dee Fink's Creating Significant Learning Experiences and D. Randy Garrison & Norman D. Vaughan's Blended Learning in Higher Education. The purpose of these grants is to support the development of instructional design skills, as well as their application to a specific course. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire serve as consultants for grant recipients. Applications are due no later than March 15. Thinking About Teaching and Advising - TODAY

Modeled after the popular Speaking of Scholarship Series, these presentations and conversations are designed to share what we are learning about teaching and advising. Polar Bear Plunge

Greetings Augsburg Community,

It is I, Officer Bob Peterson, your favorite Public Safety Officer, here to let you know that it's that time of year again my teammates the "Masons of Minnesota" and I will be participating in the Polar Bear Plunge. The Polar Bear plunge is an event sponsored by the Minnesota Law Enforcement Association to raise money for the Minnesota Special Olympics.

The Special Olympics is an organization that helps individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities through organized sporting activities.

This year will be our second year participating in the Polar Bear Plunge. In 2011 our team raised $6,200 dollars. This year we have set our goals higher, we have committed ourselves to be an official sponsor. Our goal for 2012 is to raise a minimum of $20,000 dollars in pledges. Thus far, the Masons of Minnesota have raised $5,154 dollars for this event. We have also spoken with Minnesota Masonic Charities and have secured a grant of $10,000 dollars which brings our pledge total to $15,154 dollars.

As I mentioned our team's goals are higher, and we need your assistance. If you would like to support us by making a tax deductible monetary pledge please visit the link listed below.

If you would like to participate by joining our team to "take the plunge" please contact me via email. The plunge will take place at Thomas Beach at Lake Calhoun on Saturday March 3rd, 2012 the exact plunge time is to be determined. Hope to see you there!

Each year, approximately 1,500 Americans traveling more than 130 countries receive support from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Program participants pursue graduate or professional study, advanced research or English teaching in elementary and secondary schools or universities.

Come to this information session to learn more about the program and its application process as well as hear from former Augsburg students who have received Fulbright program fellowships.

Nominations Needed for Staff Recognition Awards

The Staff Senate invites the community to nominate staff in order to acknowledge their accomplishments and contributions. The recipients of the Staff Recognition Award will be recognized at the Staff Appreciation Event, March 8th.

To nominate a member of the staff, please complete the Nomination Form, including two letters of recommendation. The nomination form and letters are due by Friday, February 17, at 4:00pm to Missy Motl (CB 314).

This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions. Recipients of this award consistently go above and beyond the call of duty by providing exceptional service to others and/or making innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg community.

Interfaith Scholar Program Applications

The Interfaith Scholars are a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through inter-religious dialogue and action. These students earn 1.0 upper division credit in the Religion Department (REL 407/408), and receive a $1,000 scholarship.

This group meets twice monthly for an academic seminar and for interfaith service learning projects. We invite religious believers from a variety of traditions as well as the non-religious to apply in order to converse respectfully with others about what one believes, why it matters and how it propels us to service in the world.

Who is eligible?
- Current students who have completed Religion 100, have an interest in interfaith dialogue, and would be able to participate the entire 2012-2013 academic year.

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. 13th Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 13th annual Augsburg Leadership Awards! Students, staff, faculty, alums, and community members are strongly encouraged to nominate their fellow student leaders, student groups, and student group advisors for a variety of awards. People may also nominate themselves or a student group in which they are involved. Winners will be honored at the Augsburg Leadership Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 10th at 4:30 PM.

French Short Film Festival this Friday

Explore language and culture outside of the classroom. The French Short Film Festival, Les Lutins du court metrage is currently showing Fridays, Feb 10 & 17, 7 pm at St Anthony Main Cinema. All award-winning French and European short films are shown in French with English subtitles. Tickets are $5 to $8.50. Un peu d'histoire: Since 1998, the biggest young talents of French cinema have been featured in a short film festival called Les Lutins du Court Métrage. This year, the Alliance Française de Minneapolis/St. Paul hosts this film festival at the St. Anthony Main Cinema for six Friday evenings beginning January 13. Come join alumna Gaby Hamerlinck and other University of Iowa STEM graduate students for a roundtable discussion about graduate school

Alumna Gaby Hamerlinck graduated in 2010 with a double major in biology and mathematics. While at Augsburg, she did research in mathematical biology with John Zobitz and Augsburg student Kayla Johnson. She was a McNair Scholar, a North Star STEM Fellow, and a member of both the women's soccer and track teams. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in biology at the University of Iowa, where she is studying phylogenetic relationships of Rhagoletis fruit flies and their associated parasitic wasps as well as mathematically modeling preadaptive traits to predict the outcomes of evolutionary competitions. On Friday, February 10, she will visit Augsburg with several other graduate students in STEM fields to discuss the graduate school experience.

Vocatio Chapel with Deanna Thompson

Please join us on Wednesday, February 15 at 10:20 a.m. as we continue the "All Shook Up: The Call to Change" Vocatio Chapel Series.

Deanna Thompson, professor of religion at Hamline University in Saint Paul, will be speaking on "Hoping for More: Cancer, Faith, and God's Future". At Hamline, Deanna Thompson teaches courses in theology, ethics, women's studies and African American studies. Author of Crossing the Divide: Luther, Feminism and the Cross (Fortress, 2004),Thompson speaks and writes widely on the intersections of Lutheran theology and feminist theology. Her most recent work includes a theological commentary on Deuteronomy (forthcoming with Westminster John Knox) and a theo-memoir on living with cancer entitled Hoping for More (due out this summer with Cascade Press).

YUM!! February 11 is Girl Scout Cookie Go Day

Thin Mints, Do Si Dos, Tagalongs, Samoas, Trefoils, Thank U Berry Munch, Dulce De Leche, and Savannah Smiles (replacement for Lemon Chalet Creme in honor of the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting)

My name is Lauren and I am selling Girl Scout Cookies again this year. Our troop goal is 600 boxes and we will be using the money to go to spring camp and to buy supplies for our Bronze Award activities. The Bronze Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn and our community project to earn this award is to develop a relationship with the residents at a local senior living center. We spend time with them reading, talking, playing Bingo, and making crafts, and we plan to build a portable garden cart to move between the rooms.

If you would like to order cookies, please send your email address to GSTroop12899@hotmail.com and we will send out an online order email on Feb 11th - the first day cookies go on sale! We will deliver on Tuesdays/Thursdays around 4pm and anytime between 9am-8pm on Saturdays. If those times do not work, we can make other arrangements.

The price is $3.50 per box and payment is due on delivery.

We are also accepting cookie donations for the US Troops and the ICA Food Shelf.
