Study in Egypt May 19-June 11
Spurred by a youth-led grassroots political movement, the Arab Spring and the revolution in Egypt are now just over a year old, and Egypt is in the midst of establishing a new political system. This provides the backdrop for 3 weeks of travel in Egypt to meet with all sorts of folks who are directly involved in this process, learning first hand about what social change means. That and the Nile, the Pyramids, Mt. Sinai, the Red Sea, and lots of amazing youth activists to meet with, will make this a once in a lifetime opportunity for global learning.

URGO Summer Research Applications Available Online
The application for URGO summer research is now available.
Spend your summer doing something you love while enhancing your resume for grad school. Apply for a full- or part- time URGO summer research grant working on your own research or creative question, or a professor’s current project. Gain valuable research, writing and presentation skills, and the opportunity to present your project during Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton poster session. Open to all disciplines.

Writing Lab Opens Next Monday
The Augsburg College Writing Lab, located in Lindell Library (street level, left of the circulation desk), will open for winter trimester and spring semester on Monday, Jan. 23. Last term, tutors in the lab conducted almost 1300 sessions working with students on their writing assignments. Tutors can help writers at any stage of their writing process. No appointments are taken; just stop by. Hours are as follows:
Monday: 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. & 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12:00-2:30 p.m.; 3:00-5:30 p.m. & 7:30-10:00 p.m.

Distinguished Alumni Award
Awarded to Augsburg College alumni in recognition for significant achievement in vocation, for outstanding contribution to church and community, and for a life that exemplifies the ideals and mission of Augsburg College. Augsburg alumni (graduates and non-graduates) are eligible.
First Decade Alumni Award
Awarded to Augsburg College graduates of the last ten years who have made significant progress in their professional achievements and contributions to the community, and in so doing exemplify the mission of the College: to prepare future leaders in service to the world.
Spirit of Augsburg Award
Honors Augsburg alumni or friends of the College who have given exceptional service that contributes substantially to the well being of the College by furthering its purposes and programs. Alumni, friends, faculty and staff, and groups who have served the College are eligible.

Disability Services Moved (CLASS and Access)
All of the services of the CLASS office, the Access Center, and the Groves lab (test proctoring, note taking, etc) are now in the Lindell Library and not in the basement of Foss or in Mortensen.
Any students with disabilities who want to use services should check in at the main reception desk of the new Gage Center for Student Success (second floor of the Library) to schedule an appointment with their Specialist. This includes students who have met with Sadie Curtis in the Access Center and anyone who has not previously accessed any services through CLASS or Access, as well as students who regularly access accommodations or services.

"Sweet Homes in Alabama" Alternative Spring Break
Registration is now open for this year's Alternative Spring Break service trip to Mobile, Alabama.
A group of 35 Auggies will be able to serve through Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama from March 17-24, 2012. This trip continues our commitment to help in the Gulf Coast and offers up an amazing opportunity for the participants to focus on service, vocation, and interfaith collaboration in a memorable way. Postage increase January 22
Postal rates increase this Sunday:
•1st class letter not more than 1 ounce increases from 44 to 45 cents (Forever stamps are good forever, no matter what you paid for them). Additional ounces remain at 20 cents.
•1st class postcard (up to 4 ¼" x 6") increases from 29 to 32 cents
•Canada and Mexico letter not more than 1 ounce increases from 80 to 85 cents
•All other international letters not more than 1 ounce increase from 98 cents to $1.05
•All package prices increase
•For those of you involved with mail projects, standard mail increases 2.1%

Volunteer - Redeemer Lutheran Church
Looking for a Volunteer Opportunity this Semester?
Redeemer Lutheran Church is looking for volunteers for the Redeemer Afterschool Program or R.A.P. The program is focused on academics, music and arts and a children’s choir for kids Kindergarten to 8th grade. Some students will also be taking cooking lessons. The volunteer’s role will be to help with tutoring, assist with classes, and spend time with the kids. The program is Wednesday’s from 4pm to 7pm at Redeemer- 1800 Glenwood Ave.
Bus #20 goes from right by Taco Bell to a block from the church for easy access.

Vocatio Chapel with Scott Hvistendahl '99
Please join us on Wednesday, January 25 at 10:20 a.m. as we continue the "All Shook Up: The Call to Change" Vocatio Chapel Series.
Our guest this month will be Scott Hvistendahl '99. Scott graduated with a degree in business administration (marketing emphasis). During his time on campus, Hvistendahl was an integral part of the Auggies football team as a wide receiver. A three-time NCAA All-American, Scott graduated from Augsburg as the program’s top performer in game, season, and career receptions and receiving yards, winning both NCAA Division III Player of the Year and MIAC Player of the Year honors in 1998 after breaking Jerry Rice’s record for career receptions.
After college, Hvistendahl played under current Augsburg head coach Frank Haege for the Quad City Steamwheelers in the first two years of the Arena Football 2 league. In his two seasons with the Quad Cities, the Steamwheelers went a combined 37-1 with two championships. Since 2004, Scott has been the wide receivers coach at Northwestern in Roseville. He also serves as the rental manager for Northwestern's Event Services.
We hope you will be able to hear his story and engage in the ongoing discussion of how faith influences change and how change influences faith.

Augsburg alumna Dr. Erdman (mathematics, '02) walks through her educational journey and shares how she landed her dream job for the U.S. Census in Washington, D.C.
Chandra Erdman works as a Mathematical Statistician in the Center for Statistical Research and Methodology at the U.S. Census Bureau. As an undergraduate at Augsburg Erdman studied mathematics and economics. In 2009 she became the first African American to obtain the Ph.D. in statistics from Yale University. During her time at Yale, she developed the statistical software package "bcp: Bayesian Change Point" on which she has published articles in the Journal of Statistical Software and Bioinformatics.

Congratulations and kudos to StepUP staff and students for hosting an education fair for high school students in recovery on Wed., Jan. 11. Over 80 students from a variety of sober high schools and sober programs attended.
Physician Assistant Student Article Published
Olga Trouskova, second year Augsburg Physician Assistant student, had her paper on ovarian cancer published in the January 2012 issue of the journal ADVANCE for NPs & PAs. The paper, "Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer: It Isn't Silent — It Whispers, and Patients and Providers Must Listen Carefully," by Olga Trouskova, BS, PA-S, and Beth Alexander, PharmD, BCPS, CGP, RPh, is a condensed version of Olga's master's paper. Congratulations to Olga on her accomplishment!
