Special Writing Lab Hours this Week
Because WEC and grad students have already begun classes, the Writing Lab is offering special hours this week. Tutors will be available to help with any writing task from Monday, Jan. 9, through Thursday, Jan. 12, 5:30 - 8 pm each day, and Friday, Jan. 13, 5:30 - 7 when the library will close. The Lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are necessary; just bring whatever you are working on!
Modeling Constructive Debate, Feb. 22, 4 p.m.
How do we prepare "informed citizens" who are "critical thinkers"? The SABO SYMPOSIUM will provide a unique educational opportunity for the entire Augsburg community to BOTH learn more about a complex and contentious issue, "ALTERNATIVES FOR FUNDING K-12 EDUCATION" & experience a model of respectful and CONSTRUCTIVE DEBATE by two leading Minnesota legislators who differ greatly on their assessments and positions.
REP. PAT GAROFALO, Republican of District 36B, who chairs the House Education Finance Committee and REP. STEVE SIMON, DFL of District 44A who serves on the State Finance Committee committee will debate the funding issue and alternatives. Then three well informed educational leaders from across the political spectrum will question the debaters and press them on their positions, followed by an opportunity for audience members to do the same. Respondents are: Bill Green, Nan Skelton & Peter Swanson. LEARN CONTENT and HOW TO DISAGREE RESPECTIFULLY.

A story of four vagabonds living at an abandoned little railway station, forgotten by God and people, where no train has stopped for a long time. Everything changes when a chest is thrown out of a passing train, and a mysterious individual emerges from it.
The four inconspicuous heroes of the play philosophize, lightly and unpretentiously, about what is the truth, where are the limits between reality and fiction, what reality really is. Boytchev's funny little people are dreamers full of profound feelings, searching for themselves and trying to find their connections with the world. A perspicuous, bitter-funny and very subtle diagnosis of the condition of the contemporary man.

Senate District 59: 25 precincts in the northeast/southeast quadrant of Minneapolis. This includes Augsburg College. Students who live on campus are eligible to vote in this city election.

Hennessy Named MIAC Athlete of Week

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College forward Rachel Hennessy (FY, Williston, N.D.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
Hennessy had a two-goal, two-assist weekend in Augsburg's nonconference tie and win at Marian (Wis.) over the weekend. She had an assist in Augsburg's 2-2 tie on Saturday at Waupun, Wis., then figured in all three goals with two scores and an assist in Augsburg's 3-1 win on Sunday in Fond du Lac, Wis.
Hennessy now has 14 goals on the season, tied with Julie Fortier of Norwich (Vt.) and Kolbee McCrea of the Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology for the most goals among NCAA Division III players nationally, according to the Collegehockeystats.net website. Hennessy ranks second nationally in goals per-game (1.27), a total that is tops among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players (overall statistics).
She ranks ninth nationally in points per-game (1.64, 18 total points), and is currently second among the nation's Division III rookies in points per-game, with her 14 goals tops among rookies. Hennessy ranks third among MIAC players in total points (overall statistics) and first in rookie points.
Hennessy has had either a goal or assist in 10 of her first 11 collegiate games, including five multi-goal/multi-point efforts.
Under second-year head coach Michelle McAteer, Augsburg's women's hockey team is 5-4-2 overall, 2-4-0 in MIAC play. The five wins have equaled the Auggies' win totals from the last two seasons combined (3-19-1 in 2010-11, 2-20-3 in 2009-10). Augsburg's 29 goals in its first 11 games is already more than the team's total in all of last season (26).
Augsburg returns to action with a two-game nonconference series against St. Scholastica, with both games at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis. Saturday's (1/14) game is at 7 p.m., and Sunday's (1/15) game is at 3 p.m. Both games will feature live video webcasts on the Augsburg athletic website.
