Late Night Lindell Library Hours Friday and Sunday

This weekend, Lindell Library will be open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Sunday nights.

On Saturday, December 10, the library will follow the WEC schedule: 7:30 am – 6:00 pm.

Hours are always available from the "Hours" link on the Lindell Library web site: www.augsburg.edu/library

Online library resources are also available 24/7 on that website.

Timecard Approval During Holidays

With the holiday break quickly approaching; we want to remind all employees of the timecard approval times for the week of December 25th. All students and staff must approve their timecards by 2:00 pm on Monday December 26th. After employees have approved their timecards, supervisors must approve the timecards by 10:00 am, Tuesday December 27th. Hours will be interfaced to payroll at 10:00 am on Tuesday so changes/approvals cannot be made after that time. Changes to timecards or approvals that do not get completed, within the above time frame, will not be paid and require a manual timecard submitted to payroll for payment in the next pay period. Complying with these deadlines will ensure prompt paychecks to employees.

Augsburg is not open on Friday December 23rd and Monday December 26th. We recommend that all students and staff approve their timecard on Thursday December 22nd. Supervisors should also try to approve timecards on Thursday December 22nd. This will prevent everyone from needing to remember to approve timecards during the week of December 25th. For those people that are required to work on Friday December 23rd and/or Saturday December 24th, please approve your timecard as soon as possible after completion of the hours worked through December 24th.

Spirit of MLK Award Nominations: Due Next Week

The 2012 MLK Committee is seeking nominations for the 2011 MLK Award. Annually, we award two people who have demonstrated peace, love, humility, integrity and honor while working with others. We are looking for people who have demonstrated these abilities on or off campus.

Please give this careful consideration and take the time to nominate one faculty or staff member and/or one student that you believe should receive special recognition for following in the spirit of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Self nominations are also accepted.

Please provide:
• Specific examples of how this person has represented peace, love, humility, integrity and honor while working with others
• Your name and contact information and the full name of the person/people that you are nominating along with their contact information.

Auggies Featured in U.S. News & World Report

Thank you - and congratulations - to the many Auggies who helped the College become part of a U.S. News & World Report story on services for international students.

A special thanks is due to Auggies Masha Shatonova and Jamyang Phuntsho. Both were kind enough to spend part of their day talking with staff and U.S. News Reporter Katy Hopkins about services they've used as international students, including academic advising, student organizations, study abroad, and campus ministry. Masha was quoted twice on the topics of academic advising and career services. The reporter also is interested in following Jamyang as he starts to work on his applications for graduate schools. That means there may be a story down the road that features Jamyang.

Thanks also is due to staff who helped, including James Trelstad-Porter, Lois Olson, Sandy Hogan Tilton, Andrea Sanow, and Cheryl Leuning. Each of you were gracious with your time, your ideas, and your help connecting News and Media Services with students.

Late Night Breakfast for Students

It's late...and it's breakfast!

Students are invited to Late Night Breakfast, Monday, December 12, 10-11:30 pm. Students - whether on a meal plan or not - are invited! A'viands will prepare delicious food and led by President Pribbenow, faculty and staff will serve breakfast.

Students will need to bring their Augsburg student ID.

Postage Increase January 22

The US Postal Service announced postage increases:
•1st class letter not more than 1 ounce increases from 44 to 45 cents (Forever stamps are good forever, no matter what you paid for them). Additional ounces remain at 20 cents.
•1st class postcard (up to 4 ¼" x 6") increases from 29 to 32 cents
•Canada and Mexico letter not more than 1 ounce increases from 80 to 85 cents
•All other international letters not more than 1 ounce increase from 98 cents to $1.05
•All package prices increase
•For those of you involved with mail projects, standard mail increases 2.1%

The Mailroom is located on the main floor of Christensen Center, by the elevator. It is open 9 AM – 4 PM Monday-Friday. Buy stamp singles, books, and rolls. We will sell the new stamps plus 1 cent stamps for those of you left with old value stamps.

Outgoing Mail/Shipping & Receiving is located on the lower level of Christensen Center behind the Copy Center. It is open 9 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday. Buy single letter and postcard stamps and mail or ship packages.

Billy Mills Event

Billy Mills, 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist in 10,000 Meter run, will present here at Augsburg College on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7 PM in the Chapel. He is an amazing speaker who motivates and inspires by telling his story. Please join us!! Free and open to everyone!!

Billy Mills was born and raised on the Pine Ridge (Lakota) Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Although Pine Ridge is very rich in culture and spirit, it is continually recognized economically as one of the poorest communities in America with unemployment reaching 80%.

Billy was orphaned by the age of 12 and sent to boarding schools. He graduated from high school at Haskell Indian School. Billy became involved in distance running and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Kansas. Never winning a major race in track and field or cross country, he continued to show promise by his performances, making NCAA and AAU All-American seven times. Upon graduating from the University of Kansas, Billy was commissioned an officer in the United States Marine Corps., and continued training for the Olympic Team. He made the Olympic Team in two events, the marathon and the 10,000 meter run. He had trained his body, mind, and soul for "Peak Performance." And the world was about to see the greatest upset in Olympic history unfold.

Today Billy is an accomplished businessman, author, and National Spokesperson for Christian Relief Services. As National Spokesperson, he has helped raise over 500 million dollars in cash and in-kind for charities worldwide. He has received five honorary doctorates, and is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Citation, the highest honor that the University of Kansas Alumni Association can bestow upon an individual to acknowledge outstanding achievement for the betterment of mankind. A major motion picture has been made about Billy, titled "Running Brave," and has been a positive influence on many of our American youth. Billy Mills was recognized on several end-of-the-millennium lists, including being chosen as Sports Illustrated’s Athlete of the Century for the state of South Dakota and Runners World Magazine the second greatest Olympic moment. In 2009, his race was chosen by Running Times Magazine as the greatest distance race on the track in the history of the Olympics. He is the only person from the Western Hemisphere to ever win the Olympic 10,000 Meter Run.

Project Homeless Connect

Project Homeless Connect is a one-stop shop model for delivering services to people experiencing homelessness or at risk to become homeless. Twice each year, Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis partner with service providers, businesses, citizens, and faith congregations to bring multiple resources to one central location where people can come to access the services they need.

These services include housing, employment, medical care, mental health care, benefits and legal assistance, eye doctors, haircuts, chiropractic, and dental care. The first of these events occurred on December 14, 2005, at the Basilica of St. Mary. It was a tremendous success, involving 250 volunteers and service providers and serving over 500 men, women, children, and youth experiencing homelessness.

The next event will be held on Monday, December 12, 2011 at Minneapolis Convention Center from 10:00AM to 4:00 PM.

Hesser Continues Leadership on Experiential Educ.

Garry Hesser, Professor of Sociology and Martin Olav Sabo Professor of Citizenship and Learning, joined Founders and early experiential education pioneers in leading a Plenary Session at the 40th Anniversary Annual Meeting of the National Society for Experiential Education. The Plenary was entitled "Planning for Tomorrow By Reviewing the Past." Garry serves on the Board of NSEE and moderated the Awards Ceremony at the final Plenary Session. Garry was also recently elected to the Board of Seward Redesign, one of the Twin Cities leading Community Development Corporations which has a historic connection to Augsburg and Trinity Lutheran Congregation.
