Embedding Diversity and Global Learning

This series of workshops focuses on Augsburg's Model of Diversity and Global Learning and how it is being used to help embed diversity and global learning in the curriculum and co-curriculum. Sessions will be held from 3:15--5:00 on Mondays.

World Wednesday Tomorrow: Study Abroad in Scotland

November 16 is Wednesday, and that means another World Wednesday is coming atcha! Augsburg Abroad is showcasing different parts of the world each Wednesday this semester, and tomorrow is... Scotland! Come visit our table in Christiansen center to hear all about our program there next summer, and how you can participate!

Consider studying theater in Edinburgh this coming summer with Professor Darcey Engen. You will experience an exhilarating collection of productions at the renowned international Edinburgh Fringe Festival. See the sights in Edinburgh & the surrounding countryside as you experience 15-20 productions, everything from prestigious international theater companies, celebrity performances, musical theater, performance art and much more!

I-Term -- Register in 1 Step

The Integrated Term (I-Term) is being offered this Spring 2012, and is open to all students.

The theme: "Fate of the Earth 101: Consumption of Food, Fuel and Media in U.S. Culture."

Students receive credit for three courses:
* ENG 270 "Environmental Literature"
* POL 170 "Law in the U.S."
* SOC 121 "Introduction to Human Society"

The I-Term will be taught by Lars Christiansen, Sarah Combellick-Bidney, and John Harkness.

Leader-Manager Circle

Velma Lashbrook will lead a series of conversations about leader/manager responsibilities based on Jim Collins' Good to Great and his monograph for the social sector, Participant will also complete his diagnostic tool and identify strategies for improving performance within their work units. Sessions will be held on Mondays from 8:30-10:00 in Lindell 202, and will include coffee and bagels or muffins. The remaining sessions include:

January 30 – Disciplined Action – Ch. 6-7
February 27 – Built to Last – Ch. 8-9
April 2 – How to Make Augsburg Great – conversation with Paul Pribbenow and Chris Szaj

Ideas about Inclusiveness

This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how to create an inclusive learning community that values all of its members. It includes discussions of teaching, advising, and coaching skills; and dialogues about specific differences and how they impact a sense of inclusiveness. This series includes a number of well-received sessions presented at the Creating and Inclusive Campus Conference last May.

These sessions will be held on Mondays with lunch available at 11:45. The sessions will commence at 12:00 and end at 1:15. Remaining sessions include:

Save Student Aid

As Congress wraps up its fall session, the focus on spending cuts continues. Two major deadlines are creating pressure that could put student aid programs at risk for being cut: 1) Congress must pass a budget for next year by November 18; and 2) the bipartisan "Super Committee," created by this summer's debt ceiling legislation, must produce a deficit reduction plan by Thanksgiving.

Federal student aid programs include the Pell Grant, federal work study funding, and the Stafford Loan program. These sources of assistance are very significant for Augsburg students.

Most Restrooms Will Be "All Gender" on Mon, Nov 21

On Monday, November 21, the majority of bathrooms on campus will be temporarily designated as "all gender" in order to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance. This means people of all gender identities may use these facilities.

Transgender Day of Remembrance honors all of those who have been the target of harassment or violence for being transgender or gender non-conforming. Converting the majority of restrooms on campus is aimed at highlighting the lack of gender-neutral facilities on campus, as well as the harassment many students, staff, faculty, and visitors encounter on campus and the greater community in areas such as gendered restrooms.

Gendered (female / male) restrooms can be found in the following locations on campus during the day:
• Basement of Foss Center
• Kennedy Center
• 3rd floor of Oren Gateway Center
• 3rd floor of Science Building

Queer and Straight in Unity also invites all students, staff, and faculty to a continued discussion around all-gender bathrooms and other issues facing transgender communities in that evening at 7:00pm in Marshall Room.

West African Documentary Screening, St. Thomas

University of St. Thomas International Student Services presents a special screening of "Dakar to Port Loco: Perspectives from West Africa." Followed by Q and A with filmmaker Nathaniel Cogley (Ph.D. Candidate, Yale University)

"Dakar To Port Loko" provides viewers with an unparalleled opportunity to experience West African life and perspective from the ground level. Whereas other documentaries focus on the thoughts and opinions of an outside narrator, this film focuses entirely on the thoughts and opinions of individual Africans themselves. Hear entertaining, thoughtful, and contrasting perspectives on United States foreign policy, work and economics, community development, and civil war.
