6 Countries -$1K+ Scholarships for Summer Abroad

Augsburg Abroad in conjunction with Student Financial Services invites you to apply for the Augsburg Abroad Students of Color Scholarship .
The scholarship can be applied toward the following 2012 Summer Session Faculty-Led and CGE Summer Programs:
1.Civic Engagement: Egypt (2 credits)
• POL 160/461 AND HIS 195 (Humanities-LAF- HIS course, Social I Behavioral Science LAF- POL 160 course)
2. Thai Education & Culture: Thailand (1 credit)
• ENG 291/391 (Humanities LAF-ENL 291, Writing/Speaking skill, English Major/Minor elective)
3. International Management: Germany (1 credit)

SPA 205: Havana Cuba in May 2012
Augsburg College, Rochester Campus has scheduled for the spring trimester a course entitled "Spanish for Medical Professionals," which will include a large portion of the class taking place in Havana, Cuba.
Date: Spring Trimester, with the time in Havana occurring on May 5-13, 2012.
This international study seminar:
-- Can be taken for course credit (one Augsburg course credit)
-- Can be audited if desired.
-- Is designed to help health-care professionals gain greater comfort in using their Spanish in social and work-related situations through intensive, small group language study and in a variety of real-life situations, such as in medical clinics or at the local market.
-- Will be applicable to most professions.
-- Provides opportunity to learn in the context of the Cuban medical system, considered one of the best in the world.
-- Includes opportunities to visit cultural treasures of the island's museums and musical heritage, meet with community action groups, and tour a local hospital.
Program highlights include:
* Spanish Instruction
* Visits to family doctors' clinics.
* Engaging with physicians to learn about the country's focus on preventive care.
* Learning about nutrition through urban gardens.
* Exploring the impact and response to HIV/AIDS.
* Visiting a primary school and discuss the intersection of education and health.
* Experiencing the rich musical traditions.
Pre-requisite: Augsburg's SPA 111 class or permission from Professor Julie Gloss (if you have taken a term of Spanish, you likely have met the pre-requisite).

Register for I-Term in One Simple Step
The Integrated Term (I-Term) is being offered this Spring 2012, and is open to all students.
The theme: "Fate of the Earth 101: Consumption of Food, Fuel and Media in U.S. Culture."
Students receive credit for three courses:
* ENG 270 "Environmental Literature"
* POL 170 "Law in the U.S."
* SOC 121 "Introduction to Human Society"
The I-Term will be taught by Lars Christiansen, Sarah Combellick-Bidney, and John Harkness.
HOW TO REGISTER:

Minneapolis Campus Space Survey
Students are getting an email/link to the survey. We'd like faculty and staff input also - the link to the survey is provided below.
We have the opportunity to think together about campus space, specifically the Christensen Center. Last year, the Commission on Space and Master Planning (CSMP) set forth a new, comprehensive structure for the development of the College's physical facilities which took into account the mission of the College, the distinct quality consistent with the way students learn, and Augsburg's identity as an urban Lutheran college serving a diverse array of resident, commuter, and multi-aged students. The CSMP identified the Christensen Center as a priority for building enhancements over the course of the next five years. We want to continue to refine Christensen as a vibrant campus center servicing all of Augsburg's diverse student populations, staff and faculty.
This opportunity arises now because of several factors:
1. The Admissions Offices (Day and Graduate) have moved to the first floor so there are spaces in Christensen Center that are available.
2. The Gage Center opened recently and will provide better space for key student services such as CLASS, Access, TRiO and Academic Enrichment.
3. Initial standardization in furnishing meeting rooms (see the Marshall Room) has begun.
4. Einstein Bagels renovations are now complete, allowing for enhanced food services.
Augsburg is committed to engaging students and campus community members in important work of the college, including work on campus space.
As with any project there are parameters and commitments and the Christensen Center is no exception. These include:
1. Einstein Bagels and the art galleries will not be renovated at this time.
2. There must be some sort of dining facility and kitchen located on the third floor.
3. Additional student services may be relocated to the Christensen Center
4. The Information Desk will remain on the main floor.
5. Work may be staged over a few years.

Phillips Scholarship Information
The Phillips Scholars Program is administered by the Minnesota Private College Fund in partnership with the financial aid offices of 16 private colleges and universities. The program is funded by the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation which recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to create a better life for those with unmet needs.
Selection criteria includes:
2.75+ GPA
Must be a sophomore in the 2011-2012 academic year
Demonstrate current financial need
Committed to designing and implementing your own community service project

Calling For Performers for MLK Convocation: UPDATE
For the 2012 MLK Convocation on Monday, January 16th, the MLK Committee would like to invite Augsburg students, staff, and faculty to participate through music, dance, spoken word, and short theatrical performances. Three pieces will be chosen by our Emmy Award-winning guest host, T. Mychael Rambo. All pieces should be about 3 minutes in length and should relate to Martin Luther King, Jr., peace, or social justice in some way. Auditions will be held on Thursday, November 17th in M5 (in the Music Building) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00pm. Please email Kasidy Moore at moorek1@augsburg.edu to sign up for your 5 minute audition time.

November is National Native American Heritage Month and the Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) at Augsburg College is truly honored to have poet, essayist, arts writer and playwright Heid E. Erdrich for a Lunch conversation for faculty, staff, students and administration at Augsburg College to listen and learn about Native people.
A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibway, Heid Erdrich grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota. She earned degrees from Dartmouth College and The Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars. Heid, is author of four poetry collections, most recently National Monuments from Michigan State University Press. Cell Traffic: New and Selected Poems is forthcoming in 2012. Her play Curiosities was produced by Pangea World Theater in 2010. A recipient of Minnesota State Arts Board fellowships, awards from The Loft Literary Center, the Archibald Bush Foundation and elsewhere, Heid Erdrich has four times been nominated for the Minnesota Book Award which she won in 2009. Food Policy Forum-Tuesday Nov. 15th @ 1:30PM
All staff, faculty and students are all invited to the Food Policy Forum hosted by Augsburg Day Student Government on Tuesday November 15th from 1:30pm-3pm in front of Einstein Bros in the Christensen Center.
We will have the Directors of A'viands Food Services and Events Conference and Planning present in discussion about the Augsburg food policy, catering services, and its impact on student organizations.
