Blended Learning Series

Blended learning has come to mean everything from web-enhanced face-to-face learning to, but not including, courses that are fully online. Integrating online technologies can enhance and enrich learning; online tools also help differentiate instruction. A recent meta-analysis reported by the U.S. Department of Education found that blended learning produced higher performance on learning outcomes than either online or face-to-face learning alone.

As part of the Foundational Series, we introduce the use of online technologies to enhance face-to-face classes. This year, we are also introducing a series to explore strategies for using online applications to enhance learning. The Blended Learning Series, co-sponsored with IT, is offered from 8:30-10:00 on Third Wednesdays in Lindell 202, and includes the following remaining workshops:

November 16 – Designing and Facilitating Meaningful Online Activities (Cari Maguire and Heather Ek)
January 18 – Digital Video and Audio Tools (Anita Fisher, Scott Krenz, and Nathan Lind)
February 15 – Web Access: Universal Online Design Principles (Hans Wiersma, Eric Strom, and CLASS resources)
March 14 – Online Assessment Techniques and Academic Integrity (Scott Krajewski and Emily Hoisington)

CTL and IT also offer passes for faculty to explore online technologies through workshops offered by Sloan-C (Sloan Consortium of Institutions and Organizations Committed to Quality Online Education). Thinking About Teaching and Advising - TODAY

Modeled after the popular Speaking of Scholarship Series, these presentations and conversations are designed to share what we are learning about teaching and advising. Sessions are scheduled on Thursdays from 11:50-1:20, and involve presentations followed by informal conversations about the issues raised by these experiences. The intent is to increase awareness of teaching innovations on campus and learn from each other’s experiences. A light lunch is served. The remaining sessions this fall will include:

Well-Being Series - TOMORROW

Your personal well-being is important to your physical and mental health, and ability to contribute effectively to the Augsburg community. This series includes a broad look at well-being based on Rath & Harter’s book Well-Being: The Five Essential Elements. This monthly series is held 12:00-1:30 pm on the second or third Friday in the Augsburg Room, and includes a copy of the book, a diagnostic, and lunch. The remaining sessions include:

Core Curriculum and Graduation Skills Workshops

AugCore is Augsburg’s general education curriculum. This series introduces the curriculum, the first year Augsburg Seminar, the graduation skills, the concept of vocation, and the Keystone Seminar. The four graduation skills – critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, writing, and speaking – are embedded in every curriculum. Anyone who teaches a course with the embedded skill is expected to attend the appropriate workshop. These workshops, co-sponsored with General Education, help prepare faculty to understand the curriculum and effectively teach the graduation skills. The workshops will be held on Tuesdays, 3:00-5:00 (except the last one). Remaining sessions include:

Faculty Policy: Final Exam/Project Policy

Dear Colleagues,
According to the faculty handbook, Section 3.2.6:

3.2.6 Examinations. The College expects that each course will have a final examination or other appropriate final project. Final examinations are to be given as scheduled during the final week of the semester. (See Section 3.4.1.) Professors must secure the Dean’s approval before scheduling a class’s finals at other times. Examinations may be rescheduled for individual
students who have more than two examinations in the same day, or who must make up an exam due to illness or other emergency.

Minneapolis Campus Space Survey

Students are getting an email/link to the survey. We'd like faculty and staff input also - the link to the survey is provided below.

We have the opportunity to think together about campus space, specifically the Christensen Center. Last year, the Commission on Space and Master Planning (CSMP) set forth a new, comprehensive structure for the development of the College’s physical facilities which took into account the mission of the College, the distinct quality consistent with the way students learn, and Augsburg’s identity as an urban Lutheran college serving a diverse array of resident, commuter, and multi-aged students. The CSMP identified the Christensen Center as a priority for building enhancements over the course of the next five years. We want to continue to refine Christensen as a vibrant campus center servicing all of Augsburg’s diverse student populations, staff and faculty.

This opportunity arises now because of several factors:

1. The Admissions Offices (Day and Graduate) have moved to the first floor so there are spaces in Christensen Center that are available.
2. The Gage Center opened recently and will provide better space for key student services such as CLASS, Access, TRiO and Academic Enrichment.
3. Initial standardization in furnishing meeting rooms (see the Marshall Room) has begun.
4. Einstein Bagels renovations are now complete, allowing for enhanced food services.

Augsburg is committed to engaging students and campus community members in important work of the college, including work on campus space.

As with any project there are parameters and commitments and the Christensen Center is no exception. These include:
1. Einstein Bagels and the art galleries will not be renovated at this time.
2. There must be some sort of dining facility and kitchen located on the third floor.
3. Additional student services may be relocated to the Christensen Center
4. The Information Desk will remain on the main floor.
5. Work may be staged over a few years.

Calling For Performers for MLK Convocation: UPDATE

For the 2012 MLK Convocation on Monday, January 16th, the MLK Committee would like to invite Augsburg students, staff, and faculty to participate through music, dance, spoken word, and short theatrical performances. Three pieces will be chosen by our Emmy Award-winning guest host, T. Mychael Rambo. All pieces should be about 3 minutes in length and should relate to Martin Luther King, Jr., peace, or social justice in some way. Auditions will be held on Thursday, November 17th in M5 (in the Music Building) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00pm. Please email Kasidy Moore at moorek1@augsburg.edu to sign up for your 5 minute audition time.

Phillips Scholarship Information

The Phillips Scholars Program is administered by the Minnesota Private College Fund in partnership with the financial aid offices of 16 private colleges and universities. The program is funded by the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation which recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to create a better life for those with unmet needs.

Selection criteria includes:
2.75+ GPA
Must be a sophomore in the 2011-2012 academic year
Demonstrate current financial need
Committed to designing and implementing your own community service project

November is National Native American Heritage Month and the Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) at Augsburg College is truly honored to have poet, essayist, arts writer and playwright Heid E. Erdrich for a Lunch conversation for faculty, staff, students and administration at Augsburg College to listen and learn about Native people.

A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibway, Heid Erdrich grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota. She earned degrees from Dartmouth College and The Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars. Heid, is author of four poetry collections, most recently National Monuments from Michigan State University Press. Cell Traffic: New and Selected Poems is forthcoming in 2012. Her play Curiosities was produced by Pangea World Theater in 2010. A recipient of Minnesota State Arts Board fellowships, awards from The Loft Literary Center, the Archibald Bush Foundation and elsewhere, Heid Erdrich has four times been nominated for the Minnesota Book Award which she won in 2009. Gary Erickson’s exhibition features architectural tiles that incorporate and expand on the traditional Chinese technique of stamped impressions and under-glaze decals. Inspired by his travels to Jingdezhen, China, Erickson alters, cuts, and masks the decals in a process similar to printmaking to create a layered effect on the tiles as he explores imagery from his travels and nature.

In the body of the e-mail please include title of the piece and the author’s name. Please note that the author’s name should not appear in any of the documents within the file. Auggie Football at Metrodome on Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College will host Bethel University in the Auggies' final “home” football game of the season on Saturday (11/12) at 1 p.m. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Limited parking is available in the Metrodome upper lot, adjacent to the Vikings' ticket office. Lot entrance is off of 11th Avenue South, near the intersection with 5th Street South. There is also ample parking (payment required) in ramps and lots around the Metrodome.

Tickets will be sold at Gate D (adjacent to the South end of the parking lot) starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Entry gates will also open at 11:30 a.m. Pass gate is also at Gate D.

Tickets will be handled just like a regular Augsburg home game. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for students. Augsburg, A-Club and MIAC passes will be accepted. All Augsburg students, faculty and staff get into any Augsburg regular-season home game free with ID. Augsburg students, faculty and staff MUST bring their student/staff ID with them in order to receive free admission. There will be no presale of tickets prior to the game.

All fan seating will be on the east site (football press box side), with Augsburg seating in Sections 109-113 and Bethel seating in Sections 104-108.

If you can't make it to the game, you can follow the action live online, through Augsburg's live webcast (Stretch Internet -- Augsburg GameCentral portal).

Augsburg will be making its 24th football appearance at the Metrodome since 1983, and Saturday's game will be the sixth time Augsburg and Bethel have met at the Metrodome. The Auggies have a 8-15 record in games played at the Metrodome and a 9-15 record all-time in games played indoors. Augsburg also won an NCAA Division III playoff game over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., in 1997.

PAUL, Minn. -- Augsburg College setter Emily McCourt (SO, Sun Prairie, Wis.) was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball team, while defensive specialist Amy Jo Opsal (SR, North Mankato, Minn./St. Clair HS) earned All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors, it was announced on Wednesday.

McCourt, a first-time all-conference selection, finished the season with a team-high 1,006 assists and a 10.06 assist per-set average. McCourt also recorded a team-high 50 service aces, as well as 32 blocks (three solo) and 194 digs. McCourt finished the 2011 season ranked second in the conference in assists per-set, and fourth in total aces recorded during conference matches.

During her two-year career at Augsburg, McCourt ranks fifth all-time in career assists with 1,883, and ranks second all-time in career assists per-set with an 8.80 average.

Opsal was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, as part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. Opsal saw time this season as a defensive and serving specialist for the Auggies, and recorded 156 digs and 17 service aces on the season.

Under second-year head coach Jane Becker, the Auggies finished the season with a 16-12 overall record, and a fifth-place finish in the conference standings. The Auggies qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the second time in the last three years, and will return all but one letterwinner to next year's team.
