Since May 2010, Kathy has visited Afghanistan four times with small delegations intent on learning more about conditions faced by ordinary people in Afghanistan, a country afflicted by three decades of warfare. Voices for Creative Nonviolence has been working closely with the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers in search of non-military solutions to end the war.

LGBTQIA Ally Training Open for Staff and Faculty

Ally Training will be available on Thursday, October 13 from 9:00am-12:00pm in Marshall Room.

Participants have an opportunity to learn about the history and culture about the LGBTQIA community, confront myths and stereotypes, discuss heterosexual and gender-conforming privilege, discuss potential scenarios, ask the questions they want in a safe environment, and discuss next steps on how to be an effective ally to LGBTQIA individuals at Augsburg.

All staff and faculty are highly encouraged to attend and will receive an "Ally" placard for their offices upon completion of the training.

There will be an LGBTQIA Ally Training available on Tuesday, October 11 from 5:00pm-7:00pm in the Augsburg Room on 3rd floor of Christensen Center. Dinner will be provided!

Overcoming Depression & Creating Purpose October 6

The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion invites you to hear filmmaker and mental health advocate Sean Campbell tell his personal story of learning to cope with depression, "Overcoming Depression and Creating Purpose: A Quest for Personal Wellness and Global Change." Sean will be speaking on Thursday, October 6th from 7:30 – 8:30 pm in East Commons (Christensen Center). Sean talks about the challenges of depression and anxiety in his own life, and shares the strategies he has developed to not only survive depression, but thrive. Sean is a 22-year-old college student from New York City, as well as an author, filmmaker, and award-winning mental health advocate. Sean has worked with student leaders in the Middle East and recently was filming a documentary in Tahrir Square. For more information, contact Beth Carlson at x1136.

Campus Ministry Fall Retreat of Awesomeness

On Friday, September 30th, we are going to have an awesome retreat from 7pm-midnight at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Roseville. Don't worry about transportation, because we have a bus for the night that is making two trips! We meet in front of Foss at 7pm and bus over to the church. Then there will be food, games, fire, and merriment in the Lord. Then the bus will bring anyone who wants to come back at 9pm. Then anyone who wants to come around nine can catch a ride on the bus as it comes back to the church.Then there will be even more food, games, fire, and merriment in the Lord. Then we will bus back to Augsburg campus. It is going to be a really fun time so I hope you can come!Please feel free to sign up in the campus ministry office (or just come on Friday)

David Weiss—a theologian, poet, essayist, and former religion professor—will discuss the intersections around gender, sexuality, faith, and family. Using the Christian Bible as a guide, Weiss will also talk about marriage and the negative impact the constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota will have for all families.

Seminary and Divinity School Day

Join students from area colleges and universities for Seminary & Divinity School Day at Gustavus! Representatives from 17 seminaries and theological graduate programs will attend to visit with students and answer questions.

In a conference format, presentations throughout the day will include discussion about what it means to be a leader in the church today, differences between a seminary and divinity school and how that might affect you, discernment processes for a theological education, and more.

Transportation will be provided by Augsburg College Center for Faith and Learning, and there is no cost to attend; a luncheon is included. Pre-registration is necessary by October 10. Introduction to Buddhism Today 12-1:30

The Diamond Way Buddhist group at Augsburg will be hosting Wojtek Tracewski on campus this Thursday the 29th from 12-1:30 in the Marshall Room, Christensen Center. Wojtek lives in Poland, and has been practicing and teaching Buddhism in that country long before it was legal with the fall of the Soviet Union. For a regular opportunity to try meditation, the group meets every Monday 10:20-10:50 in Si-Melby 206. Come for a short talk on Buddhism and meditation, followed by a brief guided meditation.

Keeping Track of Auggies

6 BUS, ENV, SPA, and POL Majors in CGE Mexico

In the last 3 weeks, Auggies Alom Martínez, Ka Vang, Lisa Burg, Makela Roberts, Marie Stousland, and Michael Orange have been traveling far and wide as part of their semester abroad in Mexico.

From the neighboring country of El Salvador to Mexico City they have witnessed peace demonstrations, enjoyed soccer matches, met with congressmen, heard accounts of survival from victims of war, and now prepare for a visit to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
