Creating an Inclusive Campus – Working Sessions
For All Faculty, Staff, and Leaders
Co-Sponsored by CTL, General Education, the Center for International Programs, Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs
Once a year we gather together to share what we are doing to create an inclusive campus and to plan future initiatives. Previously known as the Diversity and Global Learning conference, this event focuses on a wide range of issues associated with making intentional diversity a reality at Augsburg College.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the first two days such a meaningful experience - the faculty, staff, students, and leaders who facilitated sessions and the organizers/hosts for each of the conference tracks. What thought-provoking sessions!
Today we will meet to debrief what we've learning and spend some time thinking about where we go from here.
Wednesday, May 11, 10:00-12:00 – Working Sessions
Working sessions will be held with departments to debrief the conference and departmental diversity initiatives, and plan actions to integrate what they've learned into departmental plans. The sessions will be organized as follows:

Portfolio Workshop
For Faculty Preparing for CTP Reviews
May 13, 9:00-3:00 pm, OGC 100
The purpose of this workshop is to help candidates for any type of Committee on Tenure and Promotion (CTP) review to determine the various forms of evidence that can help build a strong portfolio. The focus is on evidence of teaching, but the strategies directly apply to scholarship and service as well. This workshop is not designed to replace departmental guidance and advice nor is it an analysis of the Faculty Handbook language as it applies to an individual. It does not represent the views of the CTP committee; rather, this is a long standing CTL workshop to help support candidates' preparation and is one that many colleagues have found useful. The workshop is facilitated by Diane Pike and Su Doree. Participants are encouraged to form groups to review each other's portfolio materials and provide feedback and support following the workshop.

Graduation Skills Workshops

All faculty who teach a course designed to develop one of the graduation skills – critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, writing, or speaking – are expected to participate in a workshop for each of the skills they are responsible for teaching. These workshops clarify the graduation requirement, and discuss strategies for teaching the skill, constructing activities and assignments to develop the skill, and providing assessments and feedback on skill development. This year's remaining graduation skills workshops are scheduled as follows:

10:30-12:00 am - Quantitative Reasoning (John Zobitz and Stacy Freiheit)

What to bring: Student learning assessment data from 2010/2011 (if available) or your questions and ideas about what to assess in 2011/2012. This will be a "working" workshop. Departments/programs will have time to work on compiling assessment data from 2010/2011 and to develop assessment plans for 2011/2012.

Workshop on Survey-based Assessment and the Collegiate Learning Assessment of Undergraduate Students

Speaker: Joel Fredrickson, PhD, Assistant Dean of Institutional Assessment, Bethel University, will facilitate discussion about the CLA assessment tool in the morning. Discussion about the NSSE in the afternoon.

AugNet Folders System Maintenance
IT will perform maintenance on the AugNet Folders system on Wednesday, May 18, beginning at 8:00pm and lasting until approximately 11:00pm. During this time, no access to ORGS, FACSTAFF, STUDENT, or COURSES folders will be available.

Metro Transit Route Changes Effective on Saturday
On Saturday, May 14th, many Metro Transit route times will change as a result of the construction on the new light rail system. This means buses that go along the University corridor or those buses that connect with the University Avenue corridor buses will have new travel times. Updated transit schedules should be available at the Christensen Center transit display on Saturday.
IT Systems Maintenance
IT will perform maintenance on Agresso and many other systems on Wednesday, May 18, beginning at 8:00pm and lasting until approximately 11:00pm. During this time, you will not be able to access the affected systems or services. This includes Agresso, Records and Registration, and other systems. Track and Field Volunteers at FMSC

COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's and women's track and field teams took time out from their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships preparations this week to participate in a community service project with the non-profit Feed My Starving Children organization.
Twenty-three Augsburg student-athletes and coaches spent Monday afternoon at the Feed My Starving Children site in Coon Rapids. The Augsburg group packed a total of 12,744 meals into 59 boxes during the morning. Augsburg head coach Dennis Barker said that the team was able to take away a great deal from their experience on Monday.
"The team was really enthusiastic about doing this project. They know that they're fortunate to be at Augsburg getting a good education and being on the track & field team, and that there are others that don't have the same opportunity," Barker said. "The MIAC track & field championships this weekend are very important to them but more importantly, they haven't lost sight of being good citizens. We have some student-athletes on the team that are originally from some of the countries that Feed My Starving Children works in, so it was especially meaningful for them."
According to the Feed My Starving Children website: "Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God's starving children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals formulated specially for starving children, and we ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world." Feed My Starving Children has three locations in the Twin Cities, two locations in Illinois and another in Arizona. Former Augsburg Board of Regents member (1994-2006) Jim Haglund is on the FMSC Advisory Board.
The MIAC outdoor track and field championships are scheduled for this weekend in St. Peter, Minn.
Strandell named Academic All-District

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College outfielder Laura Strandell (SR, Pine Island, Minn.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District softball squad as a first-team recipient, it was announced on Friday.
A history and social studies secondary education major with a 3.88 grade-point average, Strandell earned a spot on the 39-athlete, three-team Academic All-District squad, representing non-Division I schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba.
A four-year starter in the outfield, Strandell had the best year of her career in 2011, hitting .345 (39-of-113) with eight doubles, two triples, a team-high-tying five home runs, 25 runs scored, a team-best 24 runs batted in, a team-best .584 slugging percentage, .419 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases. Her 15 extra-base hits this season tied for the team's high.
Her five home runs tied her with teammate Jessa Hinz (SR, Richfield, Minn.) for third-most in a single season in school history, while her 66 total bases were tied for 10th-most.
In her Auggie career (135 games, 127 starts), Strandell finished with a .251 batting average (89-for-354) with 19 doubles, five triples, six home runs, 49 RBI, 53 runs scored, 24 stolen bases, a .384 slugging percentage and .346 on-base percentage. Her six career home runs are tied for fourth-most in school history.
The Capital One Academic All-District team is part of the Capital One Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba are eligible for inclusion on the district team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams. First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members.
Under fifth-year head coach Tim Gormley, Augsburg finished the 2011 season with a 20-20 record, 9-13 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Anderson named Academic All-District

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College catcher Trent Anderson (JR, Eagan, Minn.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District baseball squad as a third-team recipient, it was announced on Friday.
An economics/accounting major with a 3.97 grade-point average, Anderson earned a spot on the 34-athlete, three-team Academic All-District squad, representing non-Division I schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba.
In his first season as Augsburg's starting catcher (starting 32 of Augsburg's 33 games), Anderson finished the season hitting .308 (28-for-91) with a team-high eight doubles. He drove in 15 runs while scoring seven runs, had a .396 slugging percentage and a .337 on-base percentage. Anderson had six multiple-hit games and three multiple-RBI games this season. He had at least one hit in 20 of his 32 games this season, including 14 of the last 17 games.
Defensively, Anderson had a .987 fielding percentage, with just two errors in 150 defensive chances, while also throwing out seven runners trying to steal in 35 attempts.
In his Auggie career (58 games, 41 starts), Anderson is hitting .265 (35-of-132) with 11 runs scored, nine doubles, 18 RBI, a .333 slugging percentage, .315 on-base percentage and .981 fielding percentage (three errors in 161 defensive chances).
