CTL Night at the Theatre
The Living Newspaper Project

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites Augsburg faculty and staff to attend and bring a guest to the Theatre Department's production of The Living Newspaper Project on February 10 at 7:00 pm in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater.
Inspired by the original Living Newspapers of the Federal Theater Project in the 1930s, this student-devised performance will use a range of nonfiction sources to explore a current social issue. Ensemble members will gather interviews, articles, and multimedia and generate their own writingto create and stage a totally unique piece of socially conscious theatre. The production is directed by Sarah Myers.
Attendees are invited to a panel discussion, talk-back with the student actors, and a dessert reception immediately following the production. Please join us for this event. Social Entrepreneurship Survey
Dear Current Augsburg College Student:
We are MBA students working on our MBA Capstone Project (MBA 580) with Dr. Bruce Batten (Associate Director of MBA Program).
Augsburg is considering developing a new multidisciplinary program offering in Social Enterprise/Social Entrepreneurship. As part of a feasibility study we are conducting a survey to gauge your interest in socially oriented businesses and careers. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society's most pressing social problems. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and/or persuading entire societies to take new leaps.

Join Professors Phil Adamo and Mohamed Sallam in Summer Session I as they lead you on an exploration of contemporary issues and ancient sites in Egypt. Consider the identity of ancient Egyptians when you visit pyramids, temples and ancient monasteries. Experience life in a nomadic Bedouin camp, climb to the top of Mount Sinai and, of course, ride a camel!

Designing and Assessing Written Assignments
February 14, 7:30-9:00 am, OGC 100
The fourth session of our Foundational Series on Student Learning addresses how to construct and assess written assignments designed to demonstrate the achievement of learning outcomes. Writing is one of the four skill requirements for graduation at Augsburg, and writing assignments are embedded across the curriculum. Constructing meaningful written assignments in a way that challenges students and enables them to be successful isn't easy. Assessing written work fairly and providing useful feedback to help students improve can also be difficult. You will explore how to structure assignments and how to assess them in a way that facilitates improvement. To get the most out of this workshop, bring the instructions and assessment tool you intend to use for a future written assignment.

Mindful Dialogues Community
Faculty and Staff Conversation with Reception
Mindful Dialogues is a series designed to collectively examine issues relevant to higher education and help build a sense of community. During the spring, we are examining Peter Block's Community: The Structure of Belonging. Ron Petrich will facilitate the dialogues. Nobel Peace Prize Forum - Register Now

Fee includes bus transportation from Minneapolis and Rochester to Luther College, admission to all sessions, and meals.
Students will be housed with Luther students in residence halls. Non-traditional students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying at a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense.

Good News! Additional Hours in the Writing Lab
Because of incredibly heavy use, the Writing Lab has received some additional funding in order to provide additional hours of writing tutoring this Winter trimester/Spring semester. We will try additional late morning/early afternoon hours on M/T/R and then evaluate at the end of the term to determine whether or not these times serve students well. The schedule, thus, is as follows for the remainder of this academic year:
Monday - 6:30-9 PM AND 11 AM-1:30 PM
Tuesday - 3-5:30 and 7:30-10 PM AND 12 NOON-2:30 PM
Wednesday - 3-5:30 and 6:30-9 PM
Thursday - 3-5:30 and 7:30-10 PM AND 12 NOON-2:30 PM
Friday 5-7 PM
Sunday - 5:30-8 PM
The Writing Lab is located in Lindell Library, ground floor, left of the circulation desk.
These additional hours will be operative starting next Monday, Jan. 31.

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:

Tutors Needed
We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.
We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Recognition/Outstanding Staff Award!
The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.
Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

At least TWO letters of recommendation
The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.
Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.
Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, February 2
The Department of Residence Life is continuing its safe dialogue series for community members on issues of human diversity. The overarching goals of this series are to help people understand each other across difference as well as inspire all to take action for positive social change.
The kick off to this series occurred on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session looked to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Now, each session will focus on a particular social identity category while also considering how various oppression dynamics intersect (e.g., class, disability/nondisability, ethnicity, gender, race, religious & spiritual identity, sexual orientation). It is not required to have attended this session on Wednesday, November 3 to attend this or future sessions.
This third session in the series will take place on Wednesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100 and will focus on race, racism, and ways to take action against racism in everyday life.
So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways that you can apply, then come join us!

Pay It Forward - Spring Break to D.C.
Looking for a way to make an impact? Like travel, service, making friends and t-shirts with witty slogans? The Pay It Forward Tour hosted by Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF) may be the trip for you!
The Pay It Forward Tour (PIF) is a multi-day, multi-city alternative spring break experience that engages students in service, leadership, travel and service in a new city each day, learning about social issues, building lasting relationships, and making a commitment to continued action when they return home. All STLF College Pay It Forward Tours travel to six cities across the country over the course of nine days over spring break. Each Tour consists of up to 40 students. It will be a spring break you will always remember.
The FIRST EVER Augsburg College PIF Tour will take place this Spring Break 2011, from March 11 - March 19. We will be going to Washington, D.C. by way of 5 additional exciting cities including Kalamazoo, MI and Philadelphia, PA! The cost of the Tour is $450, which covers all travel, lodging, two t-shirts, 1 or 2 meals per day, and even some tourism. There is is also some financial aid available.

Budgeting in a Tough Student Org Economy - 1/31
CAO welcomes ALL student leaders to Budgets and Budgeting in a Tough Student Org Economy, the first Spring semester installment to the campus's Student Leadership Series. The goal of this series is to strengthen the awareness, leadership, management, and organizational skills of student leaders around a myriad of different topics.
This will discuss strategies for budgeting, including but not limited to how to lay out clear, organized budgets, what goes into creating a budget, how to project future spending, as well as how to work with a more limited budget. This session will be especially helpful to student organizations which either (1) are already commissioned and will need to submit an annual budget request to Day Student Government or (2) are applying for commissioned status for the first time.
Ann Garvey, Vice President for Student Affairs, will facilitate this workshop on Monday, January 31 at 5:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100.
Please remember, commissioned student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than two workshops per semester. Chartered student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than one workshop per semester.
Additionally, these workshops are for all student leaders on campus. So if you are not part of a formal organization, feel free to attend.
